Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I heard about the deaf woman who hears again on the radio this morning. She is also losing her sight so to get hearing at 40 when she has never had it is a huge change to her life and so much for her brain to learn.

Her mother described the emotion of the moment. I can't imagine anything so momentous.

I was left wondering how she understood the words being said to her though. She had learned to lip read but comprehending what those words sounds like is a whole different kettle of frogs. Some accents leave me wondering what was said so how did she know?

What wasn't reported was that she found the sound of her nearest and dearest's voices that irritating that she is moving out...

I just saw it on the news. Remarkable what we can do with medical science, it dosen't surprise me though.

I didnt know she was loosing her sight and that in itself is another tragedy for her.

It was interesting to hear her talk with an accent.

Whilst this story is amazing and I know and believe personal choice is paramount I know that in the deaf community cochlear implants are not always that popular.

Some see their deafness as their identity, part of wgi they are etc

The thing that floored me was she says she talks with a Geordie accent!

Nowt wrong with the Geordie accent of course but if she couldn`t hear before, how the hell did she pick up the accent when she was deaf?

Or has she picked it up since she started hearing?

Many in the deaf community identify as a different culture with their own language. A deaf nightclub has just opened down the road from me. It looked set to be a busy night there when I walked past half an hour ago.
