Does marriage still hold the same meaning as it did 50 years ago?

I think things have changed a lot from when my mum and dad was married .

I think it is far more of a throw away thing that it used to be. Marriage used to be something that really was forever, and if the couple had problems, then they had to work through them, as divorce was frowned upon. Nowadays, divorce is a relatively easy thing to obtain, and marriage no longer has the 'forever' meaning it used to, as people know that if things don't work out well, they can just get divorced. It is just seen as a piece of paper these days to some.

It does for us, we have committed to each other with the intention of spending a whole life together. Though neither of us are Christian or any other religion so civil ceremony was all we needed (actually not even that, the marriage was made at the reception where we stated our intention of being together in front of friends. Much more binding than a government contract, or promise to an entity we don't believe in.

Lots of people don't want to work through problems and maybe hadn't married their soul mate in the first place

Of course it still holds the same meaning

"For some yes, for some no."

My family struggle with the fact that I don't want or feel the need to get married. They see it as a disappointment and hope that I might one day suddenly change my mind.

A marriage only means what it means to the people involved. I think that's right . As a lot there values are very different now.

well I think over the last ten years its even changed for a lot . My two girls only wish to get married if they have a family they say.. I said its up to them as it is . My mum would say to me you don't have kids with out getting married and you stay married for the kids even if unhappy .. well I don't hold same views as my mum .

Some people seem to think I am missing out by not being in a relationship, never mind married.

I'm missing out in the same way I'm missing a hole in my forehead.

Well attitudes have obviously changed. And now there's same sex marriage.

No it doesn't hold the same meaning but times have changed. Instead of "courting" youngsters move in together and then get to know each other, everything is easy to throw away. Doesn't even enter my head that callum should be married before he starts a family. In fact I can't think of anyone I know that went down the traditional route of getting married before having children let alone not living together first

I've been married twice... Divorced twice. Content with what I have. It would need to be someone pretty spectacular to make me think about the 'M' word again.

I thought your marriage was like that that you served your husband?

Marriage today is nothing like it was 50 years ago because women now have a voice!

"I think things have changed a lot from when my mum and dad was married . "

It really has changed a lot and I'd go so far as to say that the reasons for marriage have become invalid to so many people. There's a lot of confusion and cultural discontent, too, on top of the financial burden of being ready to start a family.

Personally, I couldn't be fucked with the fairytale. I've seen friends fall apart from so much neediness and wanting more than they can have, when they thought that having a kid before marriage was enough reason to ignore the fact that they don't have a hope in hell.

A marriage does not make a good couple, an unbreakable friendship makes a good couple, once the chamicals have worn off. Marriage juts seems to turn that into a material possession, in my eyes!

I'd say you were right the first time. The "Me Generation" really set a lot of today's problems in motion.

50 years ago our parents had been thru tougher times and were probably more willing to stick at it than many of us are today.

Whether that was a good or bad thing is debatable but personally I believe a marriage needs a lot of hardwork if it is to survive.
