Researching Cancer Treatments

I see various Cancer Research projects within the UK and am sure there are hundreds if not thousands more globally..

Im wondering if they are all governed by one 'body' as a company here in the UK could be researching the same thing in the USA for example.. is that a waste of money where they could be exploring another avenue of treatment? Or are these individual companies/charities just a big free for all?

There needs to be multiple unrelated studies on the same things in order to consistently prove or discount things. Plus the research numbers and ethnicities etc need to be as large and broad as possible
