The land of grey peas and bacon

The wonderful Miss curvy's thread got me thinking of another story...A 19 year old girl died of cervical cancer because she was refused a smear test...It seems that cancer that is usually only found in older woman and men are now on the rise in younger men and women....Is it not time that they completely reduce the age that tests are carried out? I've had a few abnormal smear tests and thankfully have come back clear...However it seems that breast and cervical cancer is on the rise in the younger generation....

Also cancer in younger males are on the rise...

congrats to curvy on her great news..

I had my first smear test at 17 after a period of fainting spells and bleeding, had numerous other tests first, nothing was found. The smear was last on the list, and because of it, pre cancerous cells were found! That smear saved my life!

The age for testing should be lowered massively! Prevention is better than cure!

Great thread Cheeky! And thankyou!

I hadn't actually realised that there was a minimum age limit. When I was younger, I used to book in for regular tests because I thought one should but the nurse said no, its not until you get older and the risk is higher that you need more regular testing, oddly enough though I cannot remember when I had the last test done so obviously not that regular. Maybe because I have had so many tests done, they think I am not at risk plus maybe also because it doesn't run in the family.

On the other hand though, whether its a rarity or not, I don't think there should be a minimum age for testing of cancer at all

Thanks. I'm sure I had my first smear before that but I was married at 22 which might have had something to do with it

I was offered my first one 3yrs after having my son.

at the age of 23 and have had them every 3yrs since.

Ive just had to recently have another due to joining a new surgery. . It came back inconclusive so only on friday I went back and am hoping this one will be ok. Xx

All women aged between 25 and 64 are invited for cervical screening. Women aged between 25 and 49 are invited for testing every three years, and women aged between 50 and 64 are invited every five years.

Cute id defo ask for one xx

Younger women undergo cervical changes that are completely normal development but yield abnormal results on smear tests. The odds are you'll be messed about and prodded unnecessarily in a screening situation although i don't think you should be refused one if you have gynae symptoms of any sort

I went on the pill when I was 18, married at 22 and I had my first smear before I was 25. I'm 49 though so things have obviously changed. I remember it bledi hurt and I didn't go again for years. But my nurse in the surgery does them for me now and they send a reminder.

I think it's the unpleasantness that puts people off, it's worth it if it saves lives!

Perhaps it used to vary from one health authority to another because I remember being told that every woman should have one if she's having sex, and I consequently had my first smear at 21 years old.

I recall that something was mentioned about an age limit being raised to 25, which was probably within the last 10 years or so, which I thought was odd as I knew of a few women who had had problems and they were in their early 20s.

In my opinion I think it should have remained at the time when you first start having sex, that always seemed logical to me.

My gp used to be of the opinion that if you were sexually active then you should have them no matter what your age so she ignored the guidelines.

Her insistence on me having a test saved my life at age 18.

17 years later after, developing a phobia of them, the insistence of my new doctor that I have one done before she would refer me for ivf saved my life for the second time.

They changed the age to 25 saying that testing at younger ages gives more negative results due to normal bodily changes..therefore worrying more women for no reason.

LONDON (se)

I had my first at about 17 as my gp recommend it as I was sexualy active. Had them every 3 years until I was 25 and now I am meant to have them yearly as my nan had precancerous cells. Smear tests really do save lives and I don't get why any woman would not go.

I think the age shouldn't have a limit and should be weather you are sexualy active which some Dr surgerys do do

They must have changed it since I started having mine @ 18. I have one every year because of history and my last one came back stage 5 pre cancerous cells. Bit of treatment last sept and all is ok now. It really does save lives x x
