I wouldn't say Russell peters was specifically racist in the way some see the word in his humour its more racial stereotyping he uses and he does it inwardly as well as outwardly. I do wonder why people have to jump in though on things like this as we are getting very touchy about humour these days.

Nah, people who need to use racism or nit picking on communites or individuals for comedy/material for their shows and stand ups aren't really funny to be honest. There's only so much jokes you can do before it becomes duIl and boring - usually the same comments too. I prefer comedy based on observations of everyday life and comments on that.

...like Lee Evans. I like his comedy stand ups. It's everything you can relate to.

I once went into a barbers with a friend who isn't white. (he calls himself brown but im not comfortable saying that other than around him) all the barbers were black and were watching a black stand up comic who was talking about how black people think white people them the 'n' word who they're not around. Was the most uncomfortable trip to the barbers I've eve had

although i got called racist last night because my collegues and i had decided not to serve a party who had been causing a disturbance to other customers for some time (unfortunately they happened to be travelers) im a trainee but also the oldest and biggest staff there so i was blessed with the job of refusing sale

Everyone will see differently what is and isn't acceptable.

Personally I prefer to think about how people treat one another rather than the comedy routine they create to determine if someone is being racist.

If it's not peddling a message of hate then for me personally (and just for me personally) not a lot is off-limits when it comes to comedy.

The only things I suppose I don't personally laugh at are jokes about people being physically harmed or killed.

It's collective thinking that's makes everyone think they ought to toe a line on this subject for fear of a backlash or being judged.

I don't check the race relations act before I laugh, it just happens.

Did anyone ever see Darkus Howe go to a Bernard Manning gig in a documentary he did. Was years ago now.

He said it opened his eyes and it opened mine too to my own over-sensitivity.

He said he tried very hard not to laugh, really hard, in the end he just gave in to it. He realised the audience (who weren't all white) simply enjoyed having the piss taken out of themselves. In fact revelled in it.

He may have been a horrible sexist, racist bigot to many, some people just saw a good comedian.

And I've probably just mentioned the most unmentionable comedian there is, feel free to be horrified.

i really dont like people trading on certain descriptive comedies.

if i find it funny, its funny, and thats how it should be.

i dont care if the comedian wants to describe himself as cutting edge/offensive/racist/sexist as he is just putting himself to his own detriment and cutting out an entire audience to him that may find him funny given a chance.

comedy should never be taken seriously as it is never meant in such a way, unless specifically targetting an individual.

if its offensive, then as long as its offending everyone over the course of a set, rather than just focussing on 1 particular race/coulour/religion, then im fine about it.

i have listened to pro IRA/anti english sets and found them absolutely hilarious,

I think they were trying to be funny personally rather than feed an agenda, the comedians who worked on that show said they themselves could never stop laughing it was so much fun to make. The aim of comedy should be to make an audience laugh first and foremost and if it puts promoting political beliefs ahead of that it's not comedy, it's propaganda.

My dad would howl with laughter at Bernard Manning. He also liked Jim Davidson, the Black and White Minstrels and Til Death Do Us Part.

As a kid I used to love watching Love Thy Neighbour. You won't see it on TV any more for obvious reasons. However, what a lot of people didn't (and still probably don't) realise was that while Eddie Booth (Jack Smethurst) was always hurling racist abuse at Bill Reynolds (Rudolph Walker), the series was made to show that racism really is uncool, as Eddie Booth always got his come-uppance, or was made to look stupid, at the end of each episode. I still believe that the series (quite rightly) poked fun at racists, rather than those of other races.

There's a difference between being racist and having a bit of observational humour. I'm regularly mocked for my Bolton accent (which is a world away from racism I understand) but that's because my accent is different to all the Scousers I work with. My Indian friend and I regularly joke about her Mum trying to marry her off to a good Indian boy. I've been to a concert with a Black friend who joked about smiling so I could see her in the dark. It's all just a bit of fun taken as that...sometimes people get overly sensitive or worry too much about causing offence when it's just banter.

"As a kid I used to love watching Love Thy Neighbour. You won't see it on TV any more for obvious reasons. However, what a lot of people didn't (and still probably don't) realise was that while Eddie Booth (Jack Smethurst) was always hurling racist abuse at Bill Reynolds (Rudolph Walker), the series was made to show that racism really is uncool, as Eddie Booth always got his come-uppance, or was made to look stupid, at the end of each episode. I still believe that the series (quite rightly) poked fun at racists, rather than those of other races."
