All jokes aside, this is a serious subject. A high percentage of the eldery population have been found to be malnourished on entering hospital for reasons other than malnutrition. As we age our taste sensore diminish and therefore the food we used to relish doesn't hold the same draw. Heston is working on how food's taste can be enhanced to make it more appealing for the elderly. So they are looking at umami and how it can best be used to enhance food taste. It has also been noted by Age UK that elderly patients who are malnourished are left to their own devices at meal times and that their trays often go back untouched.

this is a big bugbear of mine hospital catering......

when my gran and papa were in the standard of food was frankly disgraceful and cooked to the point there couldnt have been any nutritional value left in it.

im not havin a dig at nurses etc as i couldnt do their job but many people who couldnt manage to feed themselves were just left with a plate sittin in front of them and if they couldnt eat it was taken away .

a lot of times i was in visitin i helped a few of them cut their food and fed them i shouldnt have had to do that but i couldnt sit by and let them struggle.

for gran and papa i took food in with me for them as i wouldnt have fed the crap that was sat down to them to a dog.

i dont see what bringin some celebrity chef in is really going to do when somethin needs to be done at the catering services level i read somewhere the budget for hospital food and its less than what a prisoner gets and any idiot knows good nutrition is vital to health but as per usual it comes down to cost and how it can be done cheaper same as the cleaning in hospitals x

As a nurse we have a house keeper on our ward that ensures that anyone that needs help with feeding gets it,she won't take a plate away of its not been touched and will question why first

It makes my blood boil to see food and drink left out of reach or not cut up to enable it to be eaten,food and water is a basic requirement

I know we're lucky to have her and that its everyones concern that works on a ward,however sadly there are some that don't think it is

a very plush appartment off junt 7 M5

When I spent 2 months in hospital, the last thing I was interested in was food and eating but when I got fed, I was greatful for anything as I was not feeding myself due to my illness.

I think that hospital food is just great, following my own experiences.

But would I like to see a top restauranteur jazzing up the menu?

I really dont know

But I would love to eat in his restaurant
