Having watched the news my faith in human beings is fats diminishing. What in gods name are these people thinking. If convicted they need to serve a very long sentence.

it's gross, why it's done is beyond me, the fact that doctors in our own country would do it is appalling, they deserve genital mutilation whilst they're in prison.

A surgeon employed by the NHS has been accused of assaulting a child in this way seemingly in the name of a religion and a god!

no, I only know what ive seen on tv but from what i can gather its done to young girls in some cultures...I believe so they have minimal enjoyment during sex and therefore are less likely to commit adultery...horrendous and barbaric

In developing countries it can sometime be deemed (on cultural grounds) to not be a part of a womans body so the clitoris is removed to take away pleasure, often when very young and usually with no anaesthetic. Anecdotally I've heard cases of this being done with.broken glass and razors,and many girls have died from infection.

It's officially regarded as torture.

The labia are often stitched up too, to prevent penetration. It 'guarantees' a girl's 'purity'. Girls not mutilated in this way can be regarded as dirty and made outcasts in their society.

I would say very painful certainly but it's nothing like as violent and disfiguring as fgm.

Personally I personally would like to are both looked at.

It is done for cultural reasons, notably by Jewish sects, but it's origins are for health reasons. Hebrew tribes wandered the desert, and men got bad infections from sand under the foreskin. There are many medical reasons now for doing it and it is generally considered by medical professionals that the foreskin, like the appendix, wisdom teeth and body-hair, is a "redundant" body part.

This is a landmark case as it is the first time the UK is prosecuting. So far the nearest we have come is providing some evidence for a Canadian prosecution.

The fact that it was happening at a hospital close to me was a surprise when I first heard about the potential for this case as the groups in the area have been working at a more street level.

I hope the CPS has made a strong enough case.

These other things are only removed if their is a problem, which is fair enough. To remove a babies/young child's foreskin to me is unnecessary surgery.

I agree, the child has no choice, whether it remembers or feels a lot of pain isn't the issue. I think FGM is an urgent matter as it's truly barbaric due to the nature of the surgery and all the nerve endings but I would like to see circumcision being a decision you took at 18, if you wanted to and were an adult. Bit like tattooing and piercing, thats cultural.

Umm not really, as far as I know at Bris my brothers were circumcised without any anaesthetic. Very young babies have incomplete nerve ending growth in peripheral parts of their bodies, fingers toes etc. The nerves continue to grow over the first few months.

Traditional circumcision does not always use anaesthetic or surgical instruments. And in some societies it is not done until adolescence. In Africa young men die every year from botched operations.

unfortunately, nobody 'asks' children and babies if they can perform these procedures

there probably is somewhere in human rights I could argue, if something was performed on me at an early age, I might just feel that they have disgraced my body/soul...my flesh isnt a commodity regardless of its value.Its mine.

Indeed, it makes me wince when I see small girls even babies, with pierced ears. It hurts, I fainted when I had mine done at the grand age of 18. Why any mother or father wants to inflict pain and mutilation on a small child like that is beyond me. My mother used to say that people who did it were the "underclass" bless her in her council flat and curlers !

I don't think you can compare just because it's genitals. Female circumcision is done without anaesthetic half the time and even with broken dirty glass when they are under ten years old usually. They cut off the labias and the clitoris (there are 3 types) and then sew everything up. As well as sex being incredibly painful they also have problems urinating as the hole where they pee is covered.

Somebody asked earlier so just want to say my husband voluntary had circumcision when he was an adult.

It's often so ingrained in them, the belief, or fear that they'll be disadvantaging the girl by not doing it. They worry more what other men, potential partners, will think than what family think.

The practice, I am sure, began as a means of controlling and subjugating women and it's been going on for so long that some accept it as the norm.

A lot of women (and some men) put up with, or are forced to put up with a lot in the name of culture and religion.

This horrific crime is barbaric. Intercourse, urination and child birth can be horrific for these women and many die as a result of complications or infections. These practises must be stopped. Education & criminal punishment is the only way forward in order to change how women are perceived in certain parts of the world.

There's one big medical argument against it.

More babies die during circumcision every year than the number of babies that medically need the procedure.

And the only medical reason for doing it is if the child is suffering from phimosis

My son suffered with phimosis and underwent surgery for it at the age of two. Only reason I see a need for it is medical. There is no medical reason to mutilate females.
