if you thought your kids wouldnt be ridiculed for having stupid names, what would you love to name them?

i would love to give my kids, or even have myself, names like those off LotR.

I recall when 'old fashipned' names such as Jack and Stanley and Ruby became popular again. I think the fashion for name is cyclic, so at some point the Keiths, Kevins, Deborahs, Tracey and Sharons will be fashionable again.

Steve, is of course, a timeless and elegant name.

You're all bonkers. These poor children just want to be called Jack, Bob, Clare or Sophie. We can't go naming them after our favourite TV characters or the places they were conceived. It's very important for children to fit in, there's enough worry about the first day at school without the fear of the piss being ripped out of you for having a daft name.

I was talking to my eldest a couple of weeks ago about the names I'd given him and his siblings and told him I went with 'normal' and not the unusual or made up names often associated with black or mixed race children as I wanted my own to be taken seriously. His response? "Which Lord knows is appreciated!!!"

That has never happened at my nephews' schools. We're in such a multi-ethnic area that kids don't pick on each other for having unusual names.

My oldest child nicknamed my youngest Titch, it stuck over the years only he's six foot three and towers over all of us, still raises eyebrows when we're out and we all call him Titch and he answers to it.

Victorians had a fashion to find unusual names for their children and there are numerous cases of Cucumber, Mustard, Mayonnaise and Cocoa becoming quite common. Things that appeared in that era.

We were thinking of naming our last son Blade. Other names in the reckoning were Cleaver, Hatchet and Machete. But in the end we settled on Swiss Army Knife. His sisters Spatula and Fish Slice love him.

My son's father wanted us to name him Frederick but as he wasn't in the delivery room and I had to name him immediately he got the names I wanted for him.

I had one pregnancy that was a girl and I had planned on Martha if she lived.
