Are they worth bothering with? Can you learn to write better on a course, (in terms of content, not grammar etc.)?

Has anyone done one? Is it something you can self-study with books?

Creativity can't be taught but story structure, outlining and delivery can be, which will allow you to write creatively if you are creative.

You can self study with anything, but getting feedback from oneself isn't the same as from someone else, there are always creative writing groups that meet in local libraries all over, so maybe you could do a bit of both?

Hanif Kureshi who actually now teaches creative writing at Kingston Uni seems to be quite dismissive of them.

No harm in actually writing and then joining a writers' group (see Meetup) for friendly and constructive criticism. Good luck!
