Bantums and chickens .?

Now I was out last weekend a see a lovely chicken run with nesting boxes on the side .. She moves it around her Garden and has 8 really lovely looking bantams give her eggs every day. I was thinking maybe I should have a sweet chicken run with boxes paint the wood so looks sweet lovely . Why I am asking is ........... are they easy to look after I have a lot of land here too so could move around a lot and look after them. ?

You dont need lots of land just a secure (fox proof) area big enough for them to run around and somewhere for them to sleep. Chooks are great cant beat fresh eggs

She had Bantums and some like I had never seen before .. like balls of white fluff and Some had lovely colors I never knew they was so lovely. And eat a lot of eggs .

They are wonderful and characterful animals. So rewarding. If you keep them, I promise you that you will never be able to contemplate buying an egg from a battery chicken or a cheap supermarket chicken breast again. Be aware that they do take some looking after, though, like most animals.

Always wanted a few in the garden happy to build a coop & run but what do you do with them when you go away for a couple of weeks on Hols ? As we have no family near by !

Well after watching rip off britain re chickens.......i dont think i will ever eat another one

Though some years ago i was thinking about keeping a cpl for the eggs etc ...

I've kept chickens for a few years now, they are really easy to look after and pretty cheap too. As for hols, surely the neighbours would feed them with free eggs as payment.

I built a big walk in covered run for them, I've since added, budgie's, finches, canaries and cockatiels. The budgie's have had loads of young which I've sold, which in turn pays for food etc.

The chickens get on great with the other birds.

All in all its a brilliant hobby

We always had chickens and ducks when I was a child,I can still smell chicken shit now

well I have horses and sheep and other things so was thinking they may fit in well and can keep moving them around the garden outside my home.. They look really lovely too xx

They'll be great, my mum has 4 chickens, they like being held and stroked too.

I had a goat was lovely but now have sheep as they eat things in the field my horses will not eat and easy to keep in the field my goat would get out end up in the kitchen , lol

Chickens are so lovely - they're sweet, friendly creatures that would follow you around the garden, especially if you're working out there - they love earthworms!

In the past, I've kept up to 30 - a mixture of large and bantams. The traditional breeds are best and pricey, but will lay for longer during their lifespan compared to the hybrids. Some people like to rescue the ex-battery hens.

They do need a bit looking after: all the usual feeding, cleaning out (especially in the summer for mites!), shutting away at night-time to avoid Mr Fox and finding a friend to look after them whilst away. But they are very rewarding pets!

we used to keep chickens and we really miss them. Can't emphasise the fox proofing enough and also be careful of leaving uneaten food because it attracts rats

I was looking at chicken run and has this wooden house with boxes I think its where they lay there eggs .. x Would I need to lock up in the house at night. ?

I hate rats and put stuff out around stables so they keep away . Today I was reading about some birds can lay light blue eggs ... that's really cool .

We used to keep Buff Orpington hens and one cockerel, seeing the chicks hatch was really nice

until I started looking I never new there was all sorts out there Buff Orpington I shall look them up .. loads of different birds . xx

My chickens and ducks were so tame they would come in the house and sit with us.. adorable and there are so many little pens you can get too. Maran black speckled hens lay dark brown eggs with orange yolks mine were corn fed and very spoilt. nice chunky chicken even the bantom is quite big. we had buff cochins with fluffy feetGo to a country show you will see all different sorts.. silkies are pretty too. go for it but protect from foxes evil things

yes seen a lovely chicken house with a big run takes 20 but I am having bantoms . I may have only 10/15 and move them around the field and garden will be very free range . Them Silkies I think look lovely and cant get over all the different bantoms you can get . xx

I used to have two silkies but they went broody and was not allowed to keep them anymore . But I still hyline laying hens . Though silkies are very good foster mums for hatching chicks out and that. There prone to get leg mite due to have feathery feet also if the ground is wet as well . But again there lovely cute looking chickens .
