"BIM is fine as long as its used for what it was intended which is to provide co ordination information and represent the "as built" product." What about at feasibility and preliminary design stages? Should the model start at feasibly and make its way through to FM?

"Yes I suppose it can be but I do not see the need for the expense at the concept stages but maybe after RIBA stage C as recently amended." A fair point. But is there not a potential to model plant space etc in 3d at stage C using revit etc that would have to be repeated at D to G and potentially a saving there? Turns out this thread piqued more interest than I thought it would. I am not as boring as I assumed.

I am on a project now where BIM is being used at project proposal stage to ensure all the service designs are coordinated.

"If it gets all the stakeholders talking and keeping talking as early as possible then there are potential benefits all the way from concept to demolition. Trouble will be that some firms will use system A some system B etc." Aye. That is an issue. Architects are particularly adept at software diversity. Unfortunately MEP only have a choice of 1 package. I wonder when that market will grow?
