A Secret Hideaway In the caravan of love

Is there any possibility that Britain could reach the levels of employment as a % of the population reached in the 50s and 60s.

Not a cat in hells chance.

Not everyone can flick burgers,as there are not enough places to employ everyone.

Manufacturing as a bulk employer is a thing of the past.

In the 50's and 60's women weren't generally in employment. So technically the amount of people in employment is higher now then it was then.

Just make people who claim benefits work for their money by litter picking, maintenance etc. Technically they would be employed by the government

Never it will probably get worse, especially with automation.

Saying that with figures the government keep manipulating to fix their agenda. No one knows or will know the TRUE figures.

Does that count people on workfare

Unfortunately some of us are on benefits because we are not able to work, so it's not as clear cut as that.

The problem with making the unemployed pick litter etc.

Is that the litter pickers that work for local councils etc. would then become unemployed.

People need to realise that with no manufacturing, you get a shortage of jobs.

77% of the UKs gdp is now in the service sector.

If the government of the 80s got things right, then job shortage was inevitable.

Manufacturing is now mostly automated so a few can now produce what used to take thousands.

I would say excuses more than reasons! most could manage a few hours a week of doing something appropriate that would contribute!

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

We've never had full employment, just different ways of counting what is and isn't gainful employment. With zero hour contracts and part-time jobs becoming a norm the figures look like there are more employed people yet the in-work poverty and claimant rates are also increasing.

When teenagers still at school can get a Saturday job again without competing against shift workers and the unemployed then we will be back to as full an employment rate as we can achieve.

Illness, disability, mental health issues just off the top of my head. Me I have cancer and fibromyalgia neither of them curable and can be very debilitating on some days less so on others.

They would still be getting in-work benefits as we pay out more to those working and those sponging retired people than we do to the unemployed.

I went to a lecture last year, where the speaker stated that the technological revolution is destroying jobs in Europe wide. Companies that previously made large scale redundancies are recovering with the aid of new technologies and processes. They are not re-employing the old work force

So full employment is probably a thing of the past..

Because the British don't want many of the jobs, a friend of mine, a farmer can't get local British people to work for him. Not for the want of trying.

Britain chose to bring in educated foreigners to do the dirty jobs in the 50s and since then British people seem to think those jobs are beneath them.

Why? They either go out and get a job themselves or they get assigned a job and claim benefits. It will cost to find someone suitable employment so it's in their best interests to do it for themselves and get paid more

No, the foreigners still need to eat, pay for transport and pay rent. Many British think the jobs are beneath them and when forced to do them do them badly. I believe people should be paid a fair living wage as a minimum but I have employed enough work placements and worked with enough young Brits to have a sense of their unrealistic job expectations. I just don't buy the foreigners take our jobs/undercut our salaries argument as a reason for unemployment.

After going to school, college, university I do expect a lot of jobs to be beneath them.

most jobs are handed to them and are hidden jobs.

With immigration at a high with also automative jobs,

there will be less choice.

You made a contribution in 1980 for the year of 1980. You didn't make it so that it covered you for a year in 2014. Of course the system is there to help people in need but the argument that you paid in for 40 years so are in someway entitled to claim on that basis isn't valid. If you said to your boss, I've worked for you for 25 years so I'm not working this year you'd be out on your ear.

Maybe for jobs like fast food or cleaning our kids seem to think it's beneath them. But in the building trade the foreign works are working for a lot less than we possibly could.

No you can expect to get your benefits. If you want to get paid you can find a job for yourself "

Genius idea. Then we can add all the now unemployed road sweepers and highways maintenance folk onto the dole and make them do the same job for a fraction of the wage

Wasn't a vote, it was people power.

With the UK, people are too divided for it to work

Unfortunately some of us are on benefits because we are not able to work, so it's not as clear cut as that.

I'm sure everyone can be good at something regardless of disability, illness etc

If people are going to get support from the state they should give something back.

Many people have worked most of their life paying into that same state that now supports them. "

Yes, funny how quickly that is forgotten as soon as someone claims benefit. All of a sudden it becomes "free money" that should require a contribution. Never mind that it's actually supposed to be an insurance policy, paid for by tax and NI over however many years.

There is a big difference between never having worked and claiming benefits and claiming because you need to from a system you contributed to when you were working.

I'm so tired of hearing how all benefit claimants are lazy scum who don't want to work and should "give something back" for being kept in the lap of luxury (apparently) at the "expense of the hard-working tax payer".

Don't believe everything the government and the media tell you.

It's not a pension scheme. You pay for now, you don't pay now to get it back later"

National Insurance. The clue is in the name.

Some money is for services which you use now. Some is for services you might need, like the NHS, the welfare system and, if you live long enough, a pension.

Pensions actually come out of the welfare budget and that bill is by faaaaaaaaaar the largest to come from that budget.

Pleased it is a topic that people have opinion on. The answer? Firstly, vite for your councillor mp euro mp. Secondly, follow up that they are doing what their mandate was when you voted. It's hard work but the good life is hard work.

There will never be 100% employment however we can increase the percentage of wealth in the country. Dont let the appointed people get lazy.

Rant over!

Increasing the age at which people can receive state pension is likely to push up unemployment stats.

The population is getting older, the government can't afford the pension bill so obviously the sensible thing to do is to make people work for longer. Except that without creating more jobs, that's going to lead to more people who "should be working" being out of work.

If they are too young to retire and can't get a job? Oh look, more people on benefits!

By the way... we're ALL tax payers.

People on benefits pay VAT and fuel duty, and are liable for many other taxes and duties too. They'd also pay income tax, if their income was high enough!

All this "as a tax payer, I have a right..." bollocks is, well, bollocks.

"Just make people who claim benefits work for their money by litter picking, maintenance etc. Technically they would be employed by the government yes every one should earn their money! it would get them back into the working routine"

Lest we forget some people on benefits have worked all their lives to pay into the system, to then have to claim from it. So you're asking them to work twice for their money?

No system is flawless. Shop the benefit cheats and leave the people who really need/ deserve or are entitled to them alone to do so.

I have always worked except for when Ive had my two children... I will go back to work when I feel they are ready to go to nursery. Yes I am on benefits and yes the taxpayer is paying for me whilst off work, but you never know what's round the corner, when I'm back at work someone else will be on benefits needing support.

Obviously you should be giving something back to society for the fantastic assistance you've received. Apparently.

That's the trouble with people who blindly believe government rhetoric and media bullshit, they don't have half a clue what the situation actually is, in the real world.

There's no reason whatsoever why not. It will take big change for us to do so. We can't have full employment while we are on the path we are on now.

Simple answer NO

For a start, population grows, there will never be enough jobs.

Secondly anyone who says why dont you get the benefits people to work for it, litter picking etc. Seriously, there are some already doing that as jobs anyway so you'd need to sack them and then get the jobless to do it as it would equal less than min wage so those employers save a lot of money.

They tried a similar scheme at places like Poundland, they sacked loads of their min wage staff and just had people working for their benefits cuz its far less than min wage.

Plus if there working for their benefits, why not make it an actual job, so they arent on benefits and being paid.

Biggest issue for benefits its if your on min wage job or even slightly above, you still get paid more on benefits, so why work 37+ hours a week to earn less than someone who does nothing but go sign a form a every 2weeks.

I'm just above min wage job, i pay all my bills, i skip a few meals a week, i never go out, i never have takeouts, no internet, tv, no holidays, no car, cant buy my nephews or any family bday/xmas presents, im using 250mb data net on my phone a month for £5, i cant save money, i have nothing for emergencies, yet i would be better off not working and claiming benefits. How is that fair? Get a better job people say, i've tried, i spent 10+yrs in higher education which added up to nothing cuz everywhere chooses experience over qualifications these days, nowhere is willing to start you off with the experience either esp when theyd prefer to have some 16yr old come in and start from the bottom, than someone older, then jobs i end up in, supervisors seems to always be the ones who never bothered with higher education, yet they're my supervisors being paid way more than me.

that would be why you don't count towards the unemployment statistics.

I would really love to get up every morning to go to work, I applied for 5 jobs today alone (even those I have little chance of getting) 5 jobs in a day is actually quite a lot for the area I live in.
