so what do you go for, are you an M&S/Waitrose upmarket shopper, a Tesco/Sainsbury/Morrisons/Asda middle of the road or do you plump for Aldi/Lidl for the bargains?

Aldi then Morrisons. Aldi's stuff is good and it is far better priced. People who go to Waitrose probably find Fortnum and Mason's cheap.

But more and more shoppers are opting for Aldi and Lidl which have grown their market share hugely in the past couple of years, which has led to a huge profit warning from poor old Morrisons this morning whose shares along with Tesco and Sainsbury have fallen some 20% since the start of the year, while the flotation of Poundland yesterday saw the shares rise by a third. A price war beckons and there will be more blood on the high street, all good for the consumer if not the shareholders!

Morrisons are going to be "investing" £1billion in price cuts over the next couple of years, which means everyone else will follow. Probably bad news for farmers and suppliers but good news for consumers as all the big chains will be fighting for custom.

Sainsbury's and Tesco mainly, depending if I am going from work (t) or home (s).

Waitrose does have the nicest food, but is a 30 min drive away, so have to make the effort if we want to go there.

M&S for bits and pieces if I am near, but there is not a big enough selection in ours to make it worthwhile going for a full shop.

Aldi at Christmas for their bits that the English supermarkets don't stock.

as for the rest:

Asda - not keen on the food, staff or cliental

Lidl - not got one

morrisons - the one near here seems grubby, the floor does not look clean so no thanks

Aldi - get some bits from Sainsburys which Aldi don't stock. But the main shop is always Aldi. Saves me more than £100 a month - that's £1200 a year - not to be sniffed at. Especially as I am saving to return to Oz next year.

Asda - 75%

Morrisons - 20%

That is because you have been conditioned to luxurious shelving, etc, in the big supermarkets. It is just a ploy to get you to part with more money. They cut the costs without cutting the quality of the goods.

Having spent a fair bit of time in Germany shopping in Aldi in the past I am a little more pragmatic. I need to buy certain things to survive - I don't need to pay for a 'shopping experience'. German supermarkets are simply functional - we would do well to learn from this.

It depends if you place any value on the "experience". I used to live virtually next door to a Tesco which was invariably packed with staff who were unpleasant and I would come out feeling stressed and irritable, so chose to drive 5 miles to a Sainsburys which was invariably quieter, with nicer staff and I would come out happy. "Aldi - get some bits from Sainsburys which Aldi don't stock. But the main shop is always Aldi. Saves me more than £100 a month - that's £1200 a year - not to be sniffed at. Especially as I am saving to return to Oz next year.

That is a big saving when you tot it up like that. I've been in a couple of times but it always looks and feels a bit like a jumble sale!

May have cost me a bit more but was worth every penny!"

I also can't stand Tescos. Their attention to staff training seems low in their priorities and that seems reflected in the atmosphere and general air of unhelpfulness. Or at least that has been my experience at the Tescos where I have lived over past few years.

"so what do you go for, are you an M&S/Waitrose upmarket shopper, a Tesco/Sainsbury/Morrisons/Asda middle of the road or do you plump for Aldi/Lidl for the bargains?"

Everyone should shop at waitrose you'll taste better when I eat you. ....
