When you get on the train clearly knackered & barely able to walk & there are 6 (yes 6) people taking up seats with their handbags / backpacks & they look at you standing but don't move their shit out the way.

Chances are that the owner also has their work spread out over all the table meant for 4 (on intercity trains at least)

so pick up the bag and place it in front of them.

Then get your "Metro" out and place it on the portion of table in front of you. Place one arm across and pretend you're doing the crossword.

It annoys the hell out of them, though i doubt they'll be any different the next time.

Usually a polite 'shift it' works. If they refuse, they'll get embarrassed.

Best to try to stand on the platform where you think the doors will likely to be - usually at either ends of the platform is a good gage (most seem to wait in the middle), then you can be more or less the first one to jump on and get a seat, especially with a table.

But yes, it's quite annoying when they don't make the effort without being asked! Although, I've had the odd gentleman stand up for me and a young lady gesture for me to take the seat when we've all been standing.

Its not hard you know the seat is for a paying ticket holder 1 ticket one seat they know the same. You do not ask its not appropriate to ask you say shift your bag over thanks. If they refuse you just tell them ok you will tell the staff and have them ejected from the train which is what happens to someone refusing a request from rail staff.

Normally I do get in position near the doors but 2day I was legging it from the gym - with what energy I had left in my legs - & was one of the last on.

I don't like asking people to move their bag, I would move mine without being asked & I like to think others would too

Walk up smiling but with a definite look of determination. Say, 'You will need to move your bag please. I'm going to sit here' (notice you don't ask their permission as you don't need it). Go to move their bag. If they don't pre-empt you and move it then do it yourself.

Usually works. I used to do it in Germany and even though I was speaking in English they got the message.

I won't stand if there are seats available.
