To smack or not to smack?

Do you think smacking is good or bad?

We have never needed to except for one occasion when my son ran straight out in to the road and I think I was so shocked I smacked him because I wanted him to realise the danger and to scare him into not doing it again, I felt sick about it after though.

My brother and I were smacked as children and we have turned out to be pretty decent respectful adults, but have still managed to bring our children up with other ways of disipline

What do others think and how do you feel if you see a parent smack their child in public?

just look to nature ....it happends there ,...i think provided it s measured and not done in anger or even enough to leave a mark its ok .Its the act of chastisement rather than the pain.

The day they banned smacking was the nail it the coffin of well mannered kids and any parental or teacher control..

We are lucky, I only need to raise my voice and our daughter knows she is in trouble, but alot of kids only respect somthing they feer or remember and that somtimes needs a good slap/smack..

Now I know some cardy wearing hipy libral, is going to come yelling crap like "how would you like it" or there are better ways, so before they do here's some history save me typing it latter..

I spent first 6yrs of my life in and out of care for being beaten as a child (alot of it was spent in hospital).. I in no way endorse beating a child, but a good clip around the ear, is alot faster at enforcing right from wrong than a "ohh you did bad, please don't do it again"

At school I got the cane and damn right it taught me to not repeat my action, even the threat of phoning my parents terrified me!! but these days kids just laugh and scream "child line"

Its a toughie...

Kids do need discipline clearly and from a young age, they need to know where the boundaries are. Looks whats happened in our society now.. being so liberally minded has made things far far worse, kids now think they are the untouchables, sad but true. I'd have loved for the no smack rule to have made things better but they didn't.. just got worse eh..

That is one tough and very Grey area

Too much is as bad as non at all i think...

I used to smack my son, if it was the final straw. Usually grounding worked but on the odd occasion he got a bloody good wallop on his arse. I think if parents are sensible (the majority of which are) punishment should be left to the parents. More time and effect should be spent on social services making sure there are no more children beaten or starved to death by sub humans. Whether smacking is right or wrong it wont stop these people.

I have an 11y/o daughter and she went through the terrible twos as most kids do and on one occassion I lost it completely and slapped her around the legs. The ramifications of that were twofold: 1) I felt like shit and 2) she feared me for a while afterwards, but not just if she felt she'd done wrong, she feared any close contact with me, and that really hurt. I vowed never to smack her again, and instead, as she grew, I found that sitting her down and talking quietly with her had a much more profound and positive effect.

Now that she's older she knows that when I say 'we need to talk' she knows that whatever she's done wrong she won't be smacked or denied priviledges for it but she also knows deep down that Daddy knows best. It's a harmonisation that's taken me years to perfect and for us it works. I can't say that anyone else is right or wrong in how they deal with their children but I can say that if it works for you then it's *your* way.

i'm lazy and can't be arsed to read the posts but i got smacked when i was a kid and i took notice of it and wasn't a twat again....

i have 2 boys who got a tap now and then, there good kids and know who's in charge, i have there respect, but its a personal choice as ever

My daughter is now 25... She has always been loved deeply and cherished.. but if she steped out of line too much where talking and the naughty step chair etc failed, she got a slapped bum or leg.. She has always been close and still is..

Main point is.. she has never bought trouble, caused trouble, she respects the police, teachers her boss etc etc.. she also knows how to have fun, go out have a good time without breaking things vandalising or causing sh** so.. all in all what worked for us worked..

Now, she passes this on to her son too.. Nothing major.. but she talks but also rules!

but its not because you gave her a tap.....probably cos you installed some morals and respect in her life and didn't let her get away with blue murder like loads of little

villains do these days....RESPECT is a big word
