Anyone in the forum own Dumbo's. We have 3..about 14 weeks old. The smallest is soo cute and very tame but hyper. The biggest is docile but still quite scared but when shes out will sit on your shoulder quite happily. The third is 'Satan' although named Kylie, she is very depressed and has give my Partner a hefty bite. any advice would be great.

Lots of attention, talking so they get to know your voices, never feed them thru the bars on the cage. Let them come to you, preferably let them come out of the cage on there own and have some treats on you and they will soon just cuddle up.

Or you may just have managed to get a rare vampire one that's just after blood!!!

Talking from a new ish hamster owner.

Wash your hands before touching them or feeding them. You may smell of food.

Have plenty of touch time with them so they are not threatened.

Just keep at it and repeating. 5-10 mins every day walking over your hands etc

She certainly likes Scottish blood lol

The other 2 come out and play and are so funny and cuddly..I feel confident in their nature that they won't bite.

Kylie on the other hand will take food from me and scurrys away but if my hand is around her she will go for me.

We thought we would have to take my Partner to Casualty she bit very deep and lacerated his finger. I sorted it though and bandaged it up like a proper nurse

Thanks all who have responded x

With all animals, not all of them are social. Animals dont bite unless they are threatened.

Persist with trying to tame it, but it's obvious you do things (with or to it) it's not comfortable with.

(just because the others are ok with it, doesn't mean this one is).

I've had rats on and off for 30 years and just burried my last two at the weekend

One of them was a dumbo.....firstly you have girls, they are much busier and feistier than the boys I'm afraid.

Does she bite worse when she is in the cage and you try to pick her up......if so she is being territorial and you should use gloves to get her out and then just allow her to roam about your body.

Spend time with her on her own away from the other girls so she does not rely on them, have her on your shoulders as you walk about the house etc

Finally I'm sorry to say having had upwards of 50 rats over the years you do get the odd one who is just not sociable

Good luck

You're right there my boys were lazy buggers they used to just fall asleep on my lap they were so funny! My girls I got after the boys were much feistier and never liked being handled as much as the boys and were very protective over their cage x

No Pets at Home. I know for a fact that the girls there weren't too confident trying to pick them up so actually your comment has made me wonder if she has had bad experiences and just wants to be left alone.

Most people I've known who have had rats etc from places like that they don't get handled very often before they get sold. (People who I know that have worked there have confirmed it) Breeders often handle the animals a lot so they are much tamer when they go to their new owners.

You will also find that breeders will not sell on those that have a personality quirk they either keep them or have an arrangement with a snake keeper.

The breeder I had many of mine from did.

unpleasant but reality, pets at home will sell anything.

We did try to find a local breeder with not much luck..and wanted younger ones ideally but I fell in love and we took last 3 as couldnt just leave one on its own.

Snakes need feeding too lol

Im very happy so far with them but would be even happier to have all 3 happy as don't like unhappy furries.

I'd try to 'handle' her with no pressure. I used to sit in the bath a sheet in the bottom with my girls just climbing all over me trying not to touch them too much to get them used to my smell etc. Also I didn't used to reach in their cage to get then out, used to just open the door and let them wander out on their own.

As the poster above said breeders are much more selective about which animals they sell on, pet shops are just about the money/turnover.

Hopefully she will calm down over time for you with patience x

Look as unpleasant a thought as it is don't be afraid to admit defeat and have her uthinaised

I had one who never came right and severed the nerves on two of my fingers over the year I had her, the only thing I void do in the end was put her to sleep as she was just not handlable and very unpredictable, I had small kids at the time and after she had bitten them a couple of times I called it a day.

I had several Irish black hooded an all female and they were lovely pets. Definitely better to get them from breeders as places like pets at home don't treat animals very well.

I do miss having rats but alas sadly I have become allergic to something about rats. Unsure if it's the sawdust or the rats themselves
