More than 20 councils have used or plan to use controversial lie detector tests to catch fraudulent benefits claimants, despite the government dropping the technology because it was found to be not sufficiently reliable.

The cost is estimated to be in the millions. Lie detector results won't stand up in court as they are so fallible and unreliable so it seems to be a waste of taxpayers' money.

What's the point in using lie detectors if the results from them can't be used in court? Seems pointless in any council taking delivery of them and wasting tax payers money.

That was my first thought. Even the government don't set any store by them so why would these councils (I think it's 24 of them) waste money like this when they should be concentrating on essential services?

Maybe they watch too much Jeremy Kyle?

I was interested in the technology of 'lie detectors' and will probably reveal my ignorance but they do not detect lies per say.

They look at the stress levels and so it's a polygraph where the result have to be interpreted so it's not reliable enough.

LOL - it is commonly understood that they are pretty near useless. The British legal system would simply not entertain them whatsoever. They can easily give false readings, and can be easily cheated. Utterly unreliable.

I vaguely remember an account about a soviet mole in the west asking his handlers what to do if he was poly graphed.

They said just relax and try to get a good night of sleep before hand as they gave average results at best. Not much better than guessing.

isnt that what councils are for, to waste tax payers money ?

There is a clear poitical agenda to create fear hysteria, anger and division amongst people using propaganda, dis information and incorrect statistics to portray anyone in receipt of any benefit as a fraudster.

Its a bit weird isnt it that councilors and polticians are elected by the people to represent people that they dont trust.

Council interviewers have no standing in law,They will have to spend millions in outside consultants to administer the polygraph and the easiest get out is to lie at the start which will negate any further questions

The particular system the councils have been paying so much money for is not the type using electrical current, but a software version that samples voice elements. Totally useless but very expensive. If your local council is buying this crap, make complaints, as it is money that could provide real services to you instead. It is snake oil at a massive price, and where officials know it does not work. That bloke who sold the fake bomb detector equipment is in jail, and so should these sellers. But, the company is very favoured and earns £millions from government contracts. Expect someone in goverment to be a director etc after the general election, or is a shareholder now, and is doing nicely. This goverment is all for spending £millions on outsourcing to the likes of Atos etc, however unfit for purpose the service is. Someone somewher is doing very nicely and laughing all the way to the bank.

I can understand people who are up to no good being worried but innocent people should be fine. Will it really cost millions? Will it fuck lol there will be less money spent on wasted surveillance by investigation teams and it will be a deterrent. Its a bit like the argument people said years ago about town center cctv cameras and they have saved money and cut down on criminal activity in areas with them.

The biggest problem will be the loss of benefits until the name is cleared.

As usual, the Councils and Government are hitting the poorest who are unable to hire solicitors to defend themselves.
