Petrol gauge roulette

Okay... Whilst listening to a podcast on my morning drive into work they were talking about how many miles they have managed to drive while the gauge was offically on empty.

I have never done this.. My car this morning only had one bar left on the gauge and then when it's really low that single bar starts flashing... So I have never got to the stage of the "flashing yellow light" on my dashboard

So the question is what is the furthest you have managed to do on "empty"

I've gone a good 40 miles on the red, it's not a good idea to go too low, especially in older cars as any crap is at the bottom of the tank. My ex father in law had an older micra, every time he ran out of fuel it needed a new fuel pump, he went through three. Diesels need to be bled through if you run out of fuel so not good either.

I've done 40 miles before now. Not something I do often but sometimes, when it's cold and raining, I just want to go home and I get the petrol in the morning

Bad idea , all the shit in the fuel settles at the bottom of the tank and when your on low will get dragged through the system .

At best running out of fuel, worse case scenario damage to fuel pump .

I had to have my fuel pump repaired last year to the tune of 2,300 Euros about 2,100 sterling a new pump was 4000 Euro !!!!!!!!

I once was in the red and the digital display said 1 mile left before I put petrol in, I wouldnt do it again though as now I know the damage it can cause

I pulled into a petrol station one day with my car telling me that I had 5 miles left in my tank only to find out that the station had also run out of fuel. I had to drive a further 33 miles with my "range" at zero miles. Car didn't even cough !! Very nerve wracking and wouldn't recommend it to anyone !

I don't like leaving it and would only let it get that low if im close enough to walk home,The OH plays the game all the time though,im waiting for the day he loses and I get a phonecall

Oh yes , 56mph, rolling down hills, not slowing down for anything including pedestrians and small mammals !!

Not sure but it was on for ages and I crept into the Petrol station , and filled up with petrol very relieved...problem was my car is a diesel...I lasted 2 minutes after I left and ground to a halt

Our gauge is ridiculously wrong. From reading empty it took £33 to fill it!! Its been sat on quarter of a tank for ages! One of these days he's getting out and pushing!

This is the reason I don't like to 'run on empty'. Also, as I use motorways a lot it would be a bad idea, not to mention an offence! You're supposed to ensure that your vehicle is roadworthy and fueled sufficiently for the journey you are making.

I once did 40 miles on fumes as the fuel cap lock broke at the filling station, it gave up the ghost about 200 yards from my garage so we pushed it the rest of the way...of course, I drove faster so that I'd get home before the petrol ran out

Sorry, this made me laugh.

When I had the Morris Minor it would say empty and keep going for ages. My current 9 year old car has a really accurate fuel use counter that adjusts to driving style, speed and traffic and I have never let that say I have less than 40 miles left.

The bike has got 42, before it ground to a halt.
