Eat a bag of sugar and a pound of lard and maybe ask yourself why ???

That's all you eat each time you reach for biscuits or cake.

"Don't deprive yourself then and have a treat..."

If I do, it'll take me out of ketosis and set me back two or three days. And any sugar could spark a huge binge.

I need new coping methods to deal with emotions; ones that don't revolve around food.

Right now I can't think about anything else. I'm not hungry. I just want to gorge myself on carb rich junk until I feel sick. Then wait an hour and gorge some more.

I hate this!

Don't listen to the 'have it if you want it' brigade.

That's the road to you know where.

People pandering to others doesn't support them it just gives them licence to fail.

No one's 'pandering' to anyone. Any diet I've ever been on has said moderation is key, starving yourself of something just makes you crave it more.

If there are illness related reasons for not being able to eat certain things then fair enough, but the opening post didn't say that

It's sugar I'm craving but if I have any the house of cards will fall down and I'll be emptying local supermarkets of junk food within half an hour. I'm going cold turkey because I can't do moderation.

I'm not hungry. I need to find something to do to make me feel better, other than the short term rush of sugar.

I wasn't clear in the opening post. I thought saying it's comfort/emotional eating I want would explain but I forget most people can't relate to using food for comfort.

My eating pattern is very broken.

Think alcoholic - craves alcohol when tired/stressed/unhappy/wants to celebrate but can't have just one.

I'm like that with sugar.

I've not had any sugar at all now for weeks, (I'm deliberately not counting).

Have some protein. It's not worth getting out of ketosis for. It'll take days to get back in and you'll have wasted that time. Have a brew, that helps. Go for a walk. Small goals- tell yourself you can have something at 6.30. Then see if you can go till a new goal of 7pm.

Think of how horribly sick you'll feel if you eat crap. Have a bath and a face pack. Then have another walk, keep out of the kitchen.

You can do it!!!!

No but that might help motivate me to go. I enjoy walking a dog if it is enjoying the walk but I dislike walking for the sake of it. Walking is a transport method without a dog.

Thank you.

And thank you everyone else, even if I'm saying your suggestions won't work. I appreciate the thought. I'm working on fixing a broken eating pattern and ways of cheering myself up/celebrating/whatever. Addicts normally get rehab and counselling but sugar/food addicts don't have much support available.

I have a long history of comfort eating too, so I get that.

I think it's not really about the food, it's about dealing with those emotions and thoughts without food.

That's a much bigger issue than just changes in diet. Have you spoken to your doctor about it?

Another couple of things.

Are you any good at visualisation? Imagine the binge, everything you'll eat, all in real time. Think about how it tastes. And the more you eat the sicker you feel. Bloated, headache, stomach ache, really full, feeling totally crap. You get the binge in your head and the feeling crap puts you off in reality.

It helps me to smell food. Weird as it sounds, have a really good smell of it. Fill your lungs and hold it there for a second. Deep breaths of the smell. I find it takes away the craving. My brain things I've had whatever it is.

I think you need something more like a councillor a good dietician could help with that you say your addicted and you turn to food for emotional support you need to break that pattern and kind of learn the triggers and to help you stay in control good luck and if you need to chat then pm me I will send you a friends request as my profile is hidden and I also know where you are coming from and it does get easier slowly one day at a time x

i saw a psycologist the other week and she taught me and the others in the class about meditation and relaxation..

sit in a chair, back straight, breathe in.... exhale... really slowly feeling how the body reacts to the movements, imagine tree's, birds singing or waves crashing..

anyhow we did this for 5 mins and it was super calming and relaxing.

then she gave us 10 raisins and told to eat them. me being a greedy sod crammed them in at once.

food psycologist then gave us just one. did the whole eye closed thing, told us to pop it in our mouths and to uuse the tongue to feel the size, texture and to notice just how sweet that singular tiny raisin was. If we slow down and savour each bite we appriciate flavours more. if i want a pack of crisps i now eat them one at a time rather than 5 or 6 crisps, i suck the flavouring off aand feel the texture go from crisp n firm to softer as i chew my food properly

really helped me anyways.. sorry to ramble

If you're in ketosis you must be on an Atkins type ultra-low carb diet. Eat some acceptable form of fat and protein and drink water.

It is low carb, (though I wouldn't say ultra low). Atkins is not the only way to eat low carb though, (and in my view Atkins is often not very healthy).

I should probably decline to comment, or make like a politician and fib

I fell off the wagon but it could have been a lot worse, all things considered, and today is another day.

I do actually feel better for it, so maybe it's not such a bad thing. It has set my progress back a few days, but it's not the end of the world.

I mentioned Atkins as it's the best known example of a low carb diet. I didn't say you were on the Atkins diet. I didn't say Atkins was the only low carb diet. But if it helps, feel free to put words in my mouth if it stops you putting carbs in yours. "

I made the point because I don't want people considering trying low carb to automatically go for Atkins as it's the best known. There are better sources of info and diet plans which are more likely to be healthy.

I'm a fan of low carb (for me - it isn't for everyone) but not a fan of Atkins. My experience of Atkins is that it says a lot about what not to eat without providing enough information about ensuring a good balance in what one does eat.

Have you considered some good dark chocolate?

It hits that sweet/rich/melt in the mouth thing but is actually daily low in sugar. As a sin it's a white one.

Or Google chick pea cake. There's a recipe from weight loss resources which uses sweetener or you can adapt the other recipes using sweetener instead of sugar. They actually taste ok though the texture is more dense. Serve with strained Greek yoghurt to con yourself you're having cream.

"I say exactly the same. Today is a new day x

"

I didn't end up emptying the cake and confectionery aisles at the supermarket, I don't feel wracked with guilt or as though I've ruined it all and I don't feel like I can't pick up where I left off before the minor blip. I'm actually feeling quite good.

I love Greek yoghurt, so no need to con myself there. I might even opt for Greek yoghurt over cream.

The damage is done now for this time. I'll consider some contingency plans in case of future emergencies though

Making the cake would also be a good distraction technique. And the house smells lovely when you've baked.

Don't forget that most cakes will freeze, so you can portion it and you know you've got a contingency in the house.

I've found that crocheting has helped - it takes both hands so I can't nibble at the same time! I also have time to persuade myself to have some fruit instead as I make myself finish what I'm doing before I get up!

I've been fighting this craving for three days. I'm usually stubborn enough to have good willpower when I want to so this was unusual. And the more I resisted the more crotchety and less motivated I got. One blip later and I'm full of the joys of spring.

Oh, and re: crochet... I can knit but I've never tried crochet. I find knitting quite dull. My latest thing is kumihimo which is a Japanese braiding technique. I've got all sorts of mad ideas for jewellery.

It's quick to learn, easy to unravel and pick back up again if you make a mistake (you're only picking up one stitch) and you get quick results. Check out tutorials on attic 24 or Patchwork Chickens.

Perhaps when I get bored of braiding anything that doesn't run away fast enough

I did see a technique online last night for bobbly/puffy crochet which I'd never seen before and which looked really good.

It's on a blog called "Dream a little bigger" and is entitled "Puff or Bobble Stitch Crochet Tutorial".

It looks like it uses a shedload of yarn but it looks great.

They can run away fast enough

Though actually, they're daft enough that they'd probably sit and let me do it.
