Lost our dog about 18 mths ago, still miss her and desperately want another one. We had a gorgeous choc Labrador, we'd still like a working dog, but something smaller

cocker immediately springs to mind, but if you are getting a working tyre, it is going to mean some kind of regular training if you want the best from it. Or, you'll just have a whirlwind

I had a Jack Russell, it was my ex's dog but I spent about 7 years with her, she was evil… she had been bred by gypsy's though. Not many people got out of the house without being nipped. Once I got to know her she was a great dog but not nice to strangers. She would run away from chickens though.

I now have a Staffy, and would recommend them to anyone, they were bred with ratting in mind so are working dogs

The kennel club recommend them as pets, even the police have some now trained for drug detection I think. Quote from kc website.

The Staffordshire is one of the most popular of all the terriers. With the human race, he is kindness itself, and his genuine love of children is well known. He is descended from a cross between the Bulldog and a terrier, and thus combines the temperaments of the two breeds.

Despite his historical connection with fighting, he has become a great favourite in the show ring, but this has not been allowed to affect his traditional rugged looks.

Just had a look and it seems the police staffy is crossed with a whippet…

If you are looking for something small, easy to look after, great with kids and with a very easy going nature check out Border Terriers, much less highly strung than a Jack Russell but as much fun.

I always have Springers, they can be a handful because they're full of energy most of the time, so plenty of long walks are in order. I'd also recommend that you have them trained as a gun dog, even if you don't intend on working them. Once you do you'll have an incredibly gentle and obedient dog that will be a joy to own.

This thread is kind of ironic as today is the 1st anniversary of having one of my most beloved dogs put to sleep.

The most beautiful and friendly dog I've ever owned was a whippet called Stan. Lurchers are stunning also plus seeing them sprint turn and jump is breathtaking. I'd never have a terrier of any discription agian as they are too single minded. Takes months to train them to be house trained.

She has long hair so non allergenic

She is wonderful

The best thing I did was get my dog

Small and cute and fluffy and non moulting

Do you have kids?

If so get a Staff. Used to be called The Nursery Dog as they look after kids so well.

The press Staff's get is terrible. They are not to be confused with American Pitbulls or cross breed Staffs.

I think they and a Chinese type dog are the only two reccommended to have with kids, not sure who reccommends though

How old is he? Full training is probably not going to work but there's still a lot that can be done. I would suggest you teach him basic commands using either a clicker or by making the clicking noise yourself. Offer a small healthy treat each time and they soon learn.

He's 3 now and I've looked at clickers but don't really understand how to do it is it ok to pm you for some info ?

got a jack russel ...he is very aggressive to other dogs and people when out and about ....he is ginger and white ...according to a jack russell breader i chat with the ginger ones always are aggressive ....lovely dog though apart from that

my eldest springer is 16 .. hes getting on a bit now. 35 ftch to him and stoic as they come

It boils down to "Whats in it for me!" and if running off into the sunset chasing a small furry animal is better than me shouting my nuts off with the lead in my hand I lose

Bearded collies or Old English sheep dogs for us... Ours has gone blind but is as lovely as the first day we got her.

I've got 2 working cockers. Amazing dogs. So friendly and intelligent and they're great with my young nephews and nieces. They go everywhere with me and I don't know what I'd do without them. Great fun to be around

we got a very small jack russel cross.

i would recomend them we know lots of people who have them.

she is smaller than a cat but she is very lively, likes you to throw things for her to fetch. i got her lots of toys but her favourate is a tennis ball and a squeaky pig toy which she pretends to mate sometimes.

she likes lots of attention which is ok because my husband is retired.

Got mine from Dogs trust and I sponsor dogs as well.

They are really good and make sure you are suitable.

On top of that you get the Dog for under £100 with some food and vet cover for a month.

They have a website where you can look at dogs in your local area as well.

Rescue dog all the way...there's a place near us that rehomes former puppy farm breeding dogs and bitches...the state those dogs are left in is criminal...don't be a part of supporting such a disgusting industry if you care for dogs...

Blake is a rescue and is great with kids and other dogs (as MrWho will attest to) I would get another rescue dog in a heartbeat, giving him a new home which is loving after quite a hard life so far is a great feeling.

I've grown up around springers, my grandparents bred them, they are lovely dogs. I've always liked cocker spaniels and English springers and would happily own one myself.

aww can you send me her picture we love lurchers to bits, we can't have a dog because we both work long hours. It's really sad, we talk about them all the time.

Mine came from a local animal sactuary. He'd been abused and picked up wandering the road by the police. He was skinny, covered in fleas and had bald patches. He was already house trained but had me wrapped round his paws within 2 days

He was a mischevious so and so and I swear he would grin at me to get out of trouble lol He'd sneak up on my bed when he thought I was fast asleep. But I luved him to bits and miss him every day.

I grew up with dogs and have had dogs most of my life (as a teenager bred Pyrenean Mountain dogs), and the only really good advice I could give you is get a crossbred or mongrel dog, it will not have the health issues associated with purebred dogs.

a stffy,don't believe all the rubbish in the press,they are even in Kennel Club register as being only one of the 2 breeds that are "very good with kids":-friendliest dogs of all

Have an 11yr old English bull terrier bitch. Absolutely love her they are so loyal and absolutely thrive on human attention and contact never known a breed to be so tactile. Fantastic around children and great fun! Highly recommend them!

I've always been a German Sheppard man with my dogs, but we decided we wanted something that wasn't going to malt half a carpet every day, and found this dog at the rescue and feel I'm love with her, she's unusually for a lurcher because she's short haired, it like felt when you stroke her
