What is fat?

Jump to newest

Bradford

I keep reading about people being fat or not wanting to meet fat people or wanting to meet fat people.

Surely people have to take height into consideration. I have a friend who is 4ft 10 and a size 8, if she became size 16 she'd look fat. On the other hand in 6ft 6 and have a 40 inch waist, so am I fat?

I think asking someone what their bmi is would be better than dress size or waist.

BMI is bullshit.

Body fat percentage would be more useful but most people don't know it.

Decent photos are the only way to go.

except BMI isnt that great a guide as thats just weight v height, weigh a bidy builder and weigh a fat person, their BMI will be the same

Ugh forget BMI... Muscle isn't proportionately taken into consideration...

Don't get me wrong; i'm more fat than muscle (a lot more) but growing up i used to be buffed and fit. My high bmi meant i spent years being told i was fat when it was my muscle mass that added my weight

(so i'm going to keep convincing myself).

A doctor will tell you that waist size is NOT relevant to height. Unfortunately, they will also tell you that a 40 inch waist is indeed clinically obese.

If I was the weight I'm supposed to be for my age, sex etc then I would look anorexic due to my build and height.

I think as long as you're healthy and feel good within yourself then it doesn't matter if you're a natural size 8 or a bigger girl like me. I'm personally not as healthy as I should be but being realistic I'll never be a size 10 and wouldn't want to be anyway.

I hate the "F" word as it's so loosely used these days. One of my mates calls herself fat when she's a size 10 and had 3 kids....my mind boggles

indeed ...i know what my ideal weight is without the use of scales and charts and would feel awful if i put enough weight on to reach what charts say i should be. Builds vary alot so these charts should only be used as a rough guide in my opinion

I think using BMI is a better way to describe someone size, but it still has it's flaws. Someone saying they are a size 16 could mean they are fat. Until they say they are about 6ft. Then it may seem average. Fat to me is when you have no shape/curves and you can grab a load of it off many areas of your body. As I said before there are many "big" ladies on here who I would get with because they maybe on the big side, but they have curves. Would I get with the woman who played heather on eastenders? No I wouldn't as to me that's a lot of fat with no shape or curves.

"

I definitely eat slow but probably to savour the food. Lol! I do agree my portions need to be smaller. I don't seem to register when I'm full? Plus I snack in an evening.. "

try drinking a pint of water about 20 minutes before each meal ...sometimes hunger is confused with dehydration and regarding the snacking maybe set a deadline such as 9pm for a cut off for snacks

"My excuse is I love food. That's no bullshit!

Oh trust me I absolutely love food, wouldn't change my eating habits for shit! But the more I eat the harder I train!

I did have gym membership before I had children and it was great. Since then I don't have time with running about and working but thinking what the best thing would be to do at home. I've had treadmills, bikes, flabulos etc but find they end up as clothes horses. Lol!

There's lots you can do at home! Probably one of the best ways to get an athletic physique, burn out workouts and muscle endurance workouts are really good for burning calories and toning up x

To be honest I don't know where to start. Its my tummy, tops of arms and legs that is my problem. Are DVDs worth a go? "

I've personally never tried them but I've been told that intensity workout is a good one, but you can also just search for workout routines on the internet that will fit to what you want to achieve and the more you search into it you'll eventually make up your own routine to fit your ability, try light weights but repeat the exercise fast and frequent! Also with regards to eating, avoid fad diets, just simply eat healthy and you'll be fine!

"I keep reading about people being fat or not wanting to meet fat people or wanting to meet fat people.

I am obese according to my bmi "

So am i.....Ruby

Healthy eating is the key. The insanity workout is a killer I've heard. Lol! I will research the internet...

Isn't fat what you perceive it to be? Some would say a size 16 on a average high woman is fat, some would see that as a normal/average build, if your asking medically what's fat then over a MBI of 30 if your asking people opinion on what's far then there is no answer because as we can see already from this thread everyone has their opinions and they all differ

fat is the bodies natural defence against famine ...everyone has a weight that they feel most comfortable at and this will vary widely ...its all about finding what is best for you personally and aiming for it. Forget what others think of your weight ...you will never please everyone but if you please yourself ..you should find contentment

The best method is to meet someone, have a chat, and see whether you fancy them or not, then it doesn't really matter whether they are fat, thin, short, tall, black or white (or a mixture of the both)

Well like a lot of people, I am fat (Mr). I had a tumour that stopped the signal to my brain that said I was full. That went un- noticed for 15 years. Everyone just said that I was greedy. 18 months ago I had to have an operation and have had the lump and an Adrenal gland removed. I lost two stone in two months!

BUT Because of that tumour, I have (and am still having) loads of tests. There is very little that has not been tested, scanned etc lol. My heart is fine and healthy, So is a lot of the rest of me *phew*.

Mine was almost certainly hereditary. Not much I could do. It was only 11mm in size when removed, but had one hell of an effect on my body!

We all have our 'Fantasy person' (mine is Kylie Minogue (ok ok)). but there was a lady I often played with at Liasons that was a size 30 and could knock you out with her tits lol. she was such a fantastic personality that she was a great pleasure to play with.

She made me realise that anyone who doesn't want to find out about the person is prob not for me.

MAMOBA, miles and miles of bugger all (Aberdeenshire)

According to BMI, I'm overweight - was bordering on obese.

Having lost 17 stone since 2010, I can say you can find the motivation - when the time is right for you.

I started with DVDs in my jammas at home because I was too ashamed to go to the gym and wear less. I was a size 24/26 and at 5ft 3ish felt huge.

I eat dinner on a smaller plate, I drink loads more water, I exercise more (I've now become a gym bunny doing between 5 and 7 classes a week) and I'm a size 10/12. I love my classes now, and eat better in between.

I still have the odd day where I snack, but I try to keep it to 2 days a week. I tend to drink water when I feel the munchies instead.

I don't use any diet products tho - as they are loaded with artificial chemicals to make up for the loss of fat and sugar. I'd far rather have a smaller portion of the "real" version of anything.

Good luck!

Thank you, I've been very fortunate.

For weight loss, I really recommend body brushing vigorously to help combat loose skin, and moisturise lots - and it doesn't need to be hugely expensive moisturiser... I use nivea or e45 all over.

What amuses me is the term "Morbidly Obese".

How many of 'em actually become morbid?

Maybe the medial profession shouldn't intervene and just let nature take it's course?

My friends mentioned him having that problem as he's lost a lot of weight recently! I'll have to let him know that
