How much do you hate them? Out of ten

1 being mildly irritated that you have to watch the speedo for the entire time you pass them and until you feel you are out of range

10 being a pure hatred so concentrated that you feel their operators should be named and shamed like paedophiles

Personally I'm roughly an 8-9 I drive fast, but considerately, never up people's arses always maintaining space.

I always flash my lights and notify other users of their presence with headlight flashing for miles down the road.

Also if I was ghey enough to have Facebook I would update my status to their presence.

What are your thoughts?

I'm not interested to hear from people who like them. Those people are total James 'Blunts'

You "drive fast but considerare" but clearly not in consideration of the laws of the road. How does that work?

No 'considerately' I rarely go more than 10mph over the limit, but that seems to be standard on motorways etc

Have no hatred for speed cameras as I stay within the speed limits, it's really simples. When I were younger n more stupid, unused to drive fast but worked out it really doesn't get you anywhere significantly faster.

Try working it out on a journey, you'll be surprised how little difference it makes.

I know, but it's really hard in modern cars not to creep over the limit. I don't mind static cameras or police vehicles, but the mobiles just seem to cheat and ambush rather than deter

I can't even imagine how difficult that is and the level if concentration required. Mobile cameras are just wrong. My gripe is that they arnt a safety camera as much as they are a trap.

Good point about the cars. Some cars are too powerful. Why the heck they make cars like that I don't know. Not saying cars should be sluggish. Just more realistic.

So you never ever speed ever? There was talk about speed limits being raised to 80 and I think it's a great idea. Obviously in 30 zones it's down to sensibility, the same with 60mph on country lanes, it would be suicidal to go at 60 but it's not against the law.

I've spent 20 years picking up the pieces after accidents, cutting live and dead people out of cars and seeing things I'd really rather forget. Usually these accidents are a result of excess speed so I think speed cameras should be there and if you obey the rules then they're not a problem. If you want to drive fast, go on a track day as its often the innocent people that get hit by a speeding driver that suffer.

What about the people who come flying up your ass on a motorway, as your traveling at 70- overtaking, then decide to move closer to the central reservation, showing you their off side headlight!!! Trying to get past!!

Is that because their cars are just too powerfull to handle???

Or people screaming through the towns

Is that cause cars creep past the speed limit???

No it's the muppets who just can't control them, it's easy to drive fast in a straight line, but put a kid in the road and then your in trouble

We would not need speed cameras at all if people were considerate enough to obey the law!!

It was definitely the camera that caused the accident. Not the car doing 100mph.

No it wouldn't. It would just. Let the speeders know when no it to drive down a certain road. That's not a deterrent a deterrent is a surprise stationing issuing fines and points

I personally don't think speed cameras should be advertised and bright yellow. People slam on their breaks when they see the which is very dangerous

"

That's always a difficult one, its like saying every accident is caused by the nut behind the wheel. Most traffic officers will tell you that it is the inappropriate use of speed that is a factor, driving at the speed limit is insane in some conditions. Of course cameras have no judgement in these matter.

I think we need to get back to a man with a flag walking in front of each vehicle.

Speed Camera operators are just doing a job... Something that shouldn't even be needed really if people show the consideration for safety.

Limits are there for a reason.

If I speed and I got caught then it would by my fault... Nothing against them at all.

Not sure if they come into the same catagory, but have nothing but contempt for those little camera cars (sometimes smart cars) operated by local councils who do nothing but raise revenue by catching people dropping passengers off by stopping for 30 seconds, getting caught swerving into a bus lane to let an ambulance through etc. AND they do it all by parking illegally. Before anyone says otherwise, no, I've never been caught out by one.

Look at the 'autobahn' no speed limit, and a great safety record.

Just as many accidents are caused by real law breakers such as drink/drug drivers.

Also how many are caused by dithering people braking unnecessarily?

How many by frustrated people overtaking because the car in front is sitting in the overtaking lane doing 65?

The speed cameras them selves are not the problem. It's the limit is too low on some stretches of road. Motorist sees it a clear no risk road, so speed up a bit, but it's this bit of read the vans sit and catch.

When was the last time you saw one outside a school, or town center or housing estate????

Guess we should be campaigning for a better limits on roads or soon every single lane will be 30.

So speeding isn't a "real" law? Do you pick and choose which laws you have to respect?

To be honest, every post you make, reinforces the impression you gave on the first one as a dangerous driver.

It is a well documented fact that excess speed alone hardly ever causes accidents. Lack of concentration or, as the courts put it, "driving without due care and attention" is however a frequent cause of accidents.

I tend to drive, at times when it is safe to do so, over the limit on non-urban roads. That is because my concentration is heightened because I am on the outlook for police and cameras as well as road risks.

I believe that I am more aware and safer that way than those that drift in a dream from lane to lane at 69.9mph because their perception is they are safe.

I also do not hog the middle or outer lane when the inside lane is free.

I have been caught speeding twice in well over 300,000 miles, the last time over 20 years ago. I have never had an accident that was my fault. Each driver has their own safe speed where alertness and speed blend to make a safe drive.

Mobile cameras are fine when they operate in a place that has an accident risk. Some are merely there to collect revenue and they should be scrapped.

If people choose to break the law and they get caught they shouldn't then whine about it not being fair. They are adults making a choice. With choices come consequences.

Get caught speeding? Regardless of how, you broke the law, suck it up.

People bang on about their 'rights' yet give little thought to what responsibilities they have.

I totally disagree

The police put signs up warning you , you are in a speed trap area, the cameras are painted yellow.

The mobile vans are big, and white and have red / yellow chevrons on them usually parked randomly and easy to spot . Police cars have massive lights on top and various reflective parts.

Police officers have to wear high viz when standing on the side of the road doing speed traps.

Your sat nav will tell you that your approaching a speed trap.

It's a simple case of reading the road ahead ,

what more do you want the police to do

This is supposed to add common sense to the conversation not criticise anyone

I have driven extensively in Germany. 75% of all autobahns have pretty much the same speed limit we have. Only 25% are unrestricted but they have recommended speed signs (rectangular blue ones) which suggest speed of 135kph (or is it 130?) Which is around 80mph. They are also considering applying speed limits to the whole autobahn network due to the death toll. And German autobahns are pretty straight roads unlike a lot of British motorways.

So another myth exploded and another piece of dubious 'evidence' disproven.

Your sat nav will tell you that your approaching a speed trap.

It's a simple case of reading the road ahead ,

what more do you want the police to do

This is supposed to add common sense to the conversation not criticise anyone "

Absolutely correct!!! If you cannot see a f'ing great van with dayglow chevrons on the back then you are not paying attention.

"may i ask how big your van is and is it car derived ?

I drive a citroen dispatch mid sized van, non turbo 1.9 diesel,

But what difference does car derived make????

A motor vehicle is a weapon no matter if is a car, motorbike or truck!if its car derived the speed limits are different than if it isnt as one of my work mates found to his cost 70 on a dual carriageway marked as 70 past a camera van 3points for speeding as he is limited to 60 but he didnt know 3 1/2 tonne Citroen van non car derived thats why i asked as many dont know this "

:

No it's done on the gross vehicle weight of the commercial vehicle , two tonnes I beleive . The weight of your van is indicated on the log book

funny that one regularly parks on the A57 in manchester city center its silver and parks against a gray wall so it blends in i know its there but many dont as by the time you see it your off the fly over and into the 40 limit from 50 and its got you from 1/4 mile away (the distance you have to be clocked for ) am not defending speeders btw as stated put the motoerway limit up to 80 and the loons will do 90

My understanding is your restricted to 60 on dual carriageways and 50 on singles then

I may be wrong might be worth checking saves a speeding fine

Yep, I know this regarding 3.5 tonne, transit for example,,, but it's rarely enforced by the police, preferring to stick to standard car and HGv limits, not sure if that's a good thing or not

I just looked it up as I have a few vans , and I firmly beleive you have made a mistake

My understanding is that goods vehicle between 2 tonnes and 7.5 tonnes are 60 on dual carriageways and 50 on single carriageways. I think a few get confused that a tachograpgh and or keeping a driving hours booklet means your limited to speed,

Google commercial vehicle speed limits uk and please correct me if i am wrong

Lol at people thinking because they drive slowly they are good drivers.

Basically 95% waffling here that they despise me because I speed are hypocrites.

You very likely speed on a daily basis, 1 mph or 10 mph doesn't make a difference.

I don't care wether its an offence to make other road users aware, it's a risk I take. Also there are websites that do exactly the same by making road users aware of their presence.

And no, I haven't been caught recently. I had a clean license for 8 years then got 6 points immediately, not for speeding or drink/drug or dangerous driving. It was an incident that escalated whilst in a stand still traffic jam.

I just hate three road related things middle lane users going slower than the slow lane, traffic wardens and mobile cameras.

I also dislike hypocrites and arseholes who can't drive but think they are doing the world a favour by crawling around with their faces pressed against the windscreen, veering about with no indication and braking for no reason. I Imagine most of you, especially the geriatrics, acting as though you are law abiding at all times, are in this last bracket.

ah and now we have the toddler tantrum, insulting people because people didnt agree with you....classic!

I'll agree that those abiding by the speed limit are not always safer drivers but we are not debating driver ability here. YOU specifically singled out 1 aspect of bad driving and that is an entitlement to speed. If you'd have started a thread about bad drivers then speeding would have been just 1 of many issues that could have been discussed.

They are a revenue collecting exercise. If we're really serious about changing driver behavior then make it inconvenient to people to speed. Initially expose people to pictures /video of speeding accidents /injuries? Further offences meeting willing RTA victims and families and discussion of how it has effected their lives? Otherwise it's just an academic exercise...?

i am not upset, i think its hilarious that you think that just because people disagreed they are bad drivers.

In fact if you'd have bothered to read all responses you would have seen that i admitted to seeding at times but i dont get pissed off when i get caught. it is very hard to miss speed cameras and mobile vans....they are advertised before you come upon them d ten they are painted bright yellow!

If you choose to break the law then you must accept that the law will choose to try and catch you at it.

I always stop for lolly pop people if their sign is upright and if they are in the road

, a few in southampton don't quite to seem to have grasped that cars stop when they stand chatting with the sign upright , the one near me is a pain in the arse for that .

Long story short, I wouldn't let a white van cut into the lane I was in as he had travelled all the way up past stationary traffic in a right turn lane, then decided he wanted to go straight on.

He got pissy followed me and a silly game of him tailgating and me issuing hand signals began.

It came to a head once fully stationary and became a physical altercation. We were both convicted of road offences due to other drivers calling the police.

"They are a revenue collecting exercise. If we're really serious about changing driver behavior then make it inconvenient to people to speed. Initially expose people to pictures /video of speeding accidents /injuries? Further offences meeting willing RTA victims and families and discussion of how it has effected their lives? Otherwise it's just an academic exercise...?

THAT is my point. It's a tax. The sheep on here believe everything that is pumped into their drone like minds.

It DOES NOT have any effect on speeding or the causes of speeding.

It doesn't even make roads safer ffs.

had an affect on me, i used to razz about everywhere, leaving late ll the time so speeding up to et places. had a couple of fines and did a course and now i am much calmer on the roads now

oh...and name calling again just makes your argument childish. can you not put a point across without being insulting?

Where am I name calling exactly? Once, let alone again.

Thanks for letting us know your a reformed speeder it's heart warming indeed

so you think calling people sheep and accusing them of having 'drone like minds' are nice things do you?

And your little paragraph about the driving prowess of those who don't agree with your entitlement to speed wasn't exactly warm and friendly now was it?

Unmarked cars don't pull people like me, they are concerned with dangerous, aggressive driving and excessive speeding. So I don't worry at all.

Ask a traffic officer how he feels after telling a family that their son, daughter, mum, dad etc has just been killed in an accident or ask me how I feel after me and my colleagues have cut a body out of a car because someone thought it was acceptable to speed then wonder if speed cameras are a good or bad thing. They contribute to road safety but are not the answer. Driver education and consideration for other road users and the road conditions all help cut unnecessary road deaths but educating some is impossible.

I did a speed awareness course the other week. It gives a very insightful view of what the implications of that extra 10 mph, actually do in an accident.

A case in point might be plans to install average speed cameras on Scotland's "killer" A9. Huge opposition from motorists cos what they want is road improvents so they can ignore the speed limits with less chance of an accident, not to be held to existing, safer, speed limits.

In a hurry? Gotta be somewhere important at a certain time? Leave earlier.

whats more transparent than if you are caught speeding you get a fine and points on your license or the option to go on a course?

What you are moaning about is the fact that the police can change the place where they choose to check for speeders because that means you cant amend your driving style to prevent you getting caught.

And the exact same thing can be said of traffic wardens. OP numbered them second in his list of hated traffic things. If people didn't disobey parking rules they wouldn't be dealt with by enforcement officers

I'm not trying to educate anyone although my work as a firefighter we spend a lot of time with young drivers so in that respect I am as its part of my job to try and reduce road deaths especially in new drivers. The death of one person by one act of needless speeding affects a whole lot more people than just the family. I've seen a lot I'd like to forget in the last 20 years but we can only do so much. There will always be a minority of reckless drivers.

I'm not agreeing with you as I think speed cameras have their place and I'd never flash anyone who is speeding to warn them. If you obey the limits then speed cameras aren't an issue for you. If you choose to speed don't get annoyed if you get caught.

Going over the speed limit doesn't cause accidents as much as not being able to stop safely when you really need to.

The faster you go the more space around you is needed to be able to stop so on an emptyish motorway 80mph is not going to be unsafe, at rush hour on the M25 probably not so safe. Some drivers don't seem to be able to see much further then the end of their own bonnet, others are more aware of their surroundings. You have to legislate for the worst drivers.

If you can't stop safely whatever speed you are going it's dangerous.

Speed limits in built up areas are about right. I don't mind slowing to 20mph or less around schools etc. Especially at the times when there are going to be pedestrians and parents parking like idiots around the schools.

Modern vehicles are much safer than the vehicles on the roads when speed limits were introduced, tyres are much better, stopping distances have reduced. Flip side of that coin is the roads are much busier.

Most police forces give a 10% leeway on speeding, a traffic officer will often be more lenient than a camera system as they use their judgement on the prevailing road conditions. I'd like to see more variable speed limits on out of town motorways and dual carriageways, I would have thought the infrastructure for these types of signs are fairly expensive to install.

I've never driven on an autobahn, but my understanding of it was that overall there were less accidents, but when there were accidents they were bigger and more severe.

However, if he drives with the same attitude he has displayed here, I can only be glad he is so distant that it is unlikely I will encounter him on the road.

"What about the people who come flying up your ass on a motorway, as your traveling at 70- overtaking, then decide to move closer to the central reservation, showing you their off side headlight!!!

That's because the speeding offenses wikl be replaced by more serious charges"

They should be charged with every offence they did, especially after being asked to stop by the police... Should stop a fair few high speed chases

A definite 10.

Like fixed ones, they're supposed to only be in accident black-spots. But most of them aren't, instead they're in locations where drivers are liable to exceed the speed limit.

If there is an area where there is more likely to be crime committed then the police may put more patrols on to prevent that.

So it makes sense to me that if people are more likely to break the speed limit in a particular area they would have more speed cameras to prevent it.

Actually it's down to the vehicle class when taxing the vehicle. You can tax a car-derived van with windows in (say a Merc Vito) as a commercial vehicle and the speed limit will be 50mph on national speed limit single-carriageway roads. Tax it as a private car and the speed limit will be 60mph. (Eg the Merc Viano which is identical to a Vito except in name and the fact it's sold and taxed by a car dealership as opposed to a commercial dealership).

Speed limits are there for very good reason, regardless of whether you agree with them or not. There's a time and a place for driving at speed - it's called a "track day" !!

This. Most modern cars have cruise control or a speed-limit warning so if you go over the limit it tells you. Throttle control comes with time

if people want to stop them being money making schemes then they should stop speeding surely? Why would the police take the cameras down when they work so succesfully for them? Its the idiots that keep making the cameras flash that are to blame

speed cameras serve a purpose they are there to deter people from speeding though I would prefer to see them in locations such as around schools and busy areas with lots of pedestrians as opposed open roads where they are purely there to generate cash in some instances. if you drive within the speed limit then you have nothing to worry about. I drive a hgv vehicles and we are restricted to 56 mph do why not restrict cars ?

Central

I dislike them, as they should only be used where accident figures show a current need. This is not the case around here, where they are positioned in near secret, so more people are caught. Their visibility should be a deterrent, which is why fixed cameras were changed to neon yellow. Their priority should be to influence behaviour and not to punish, when it is the reverse motivation that is used instead. We need to ban drivers who are too slow for our congested roads, until they can prove they can make good progress, as they would need to demonstrate for a test, or else fail. Unless we are to build massive road capacity increases, slow drivers will deplete what little space that we do have, disproportionately. Too slow driving causes accidents and influences others to drive dangerously, such as overtaking or speeding. Put slow drivers into racing cars on tracks, and test them or fail them, or possibly something a little less severe. And incentivise police to advise and train, punishing them for ticket issuing, where the actual driver is never spoken to. To motivate people, feedback has to be immediate or is not a lasting cause for change, and thus is wasted.

On a seperate note, I did get caught speeding and attended a speed awareness course for having sinned at 32mph on a 30mph road...it was an eye opener and should be compulsory for all IMHO...however all I do now is spend more time looking at my speedo than looking at the road ahead!

Usually these accidents are a result of excess speed so I think speed cameras should be there and if you obey the rules then they're not a problem. If you want to drive fast, go on a track day as its often the innocent people that get hit by a speeding driver that suffer."

I have no problem with speed traps be they static, mobile or Constable Plod with his gun at the side of the road.

Fact is if you get caught speeding then you were going too fast.

Its really very simple, if either your attention is so poor or speed so high that you fail to see the camera, camera van, police car or officer with his/her gun and reduce your speed to the limit then you need to be caught.

Fact is speed in itself does not kill, inappropriate speed kills and if your traveling so fast that you miss a camera/gun then your speed is inappropriate.

Speed does not kill, fact. If speed was a killer why aren't there several deaths each year in F1?

Bad driving kills, mix that with speed and the deaths increase!

It's a shame these cameras can't catch people driving with misted up / frozen windscreens , people who never check their mirrors, people that don't look any further than 20 feet in front of them, people using mobiles , people who don't use indicators on roundabouts, people who sit in the middle lane of motorways , people who are completely unaware of what's going on around them, people driving wearing hoodies with the hoods up, people high on drugs, people who have not had a sight test in years, people who drive well below the speed limit, .......

Oh I could go on and on!!

Fact is we need more traffic police. They have the human touch and can determine whether you are driving safely regardless of your speed and make a judgement on whether you are safe or not, cameras don't !

Got no particular gripe about the speed cameras being static or mobile, but do have a problem with both making drivers look at the speedo instead of the road.

Plus there is good reason to suspect hand held speed devices to be inaccurate leaving many penalised drivers who were not doing anything wrong.

It's not speed as such which causes accidents, it's speed differential.

The reason there are comparatively few F1 accidents is that (mostly) the cars are going in the same direction at much the same speed. The same principle applies to the likes of the Red Arrows - and carnival rides.

My big "problem" with speed cameras;

I could be driving down the M1 at 8am Sunday morning. Dry and very quiet road in my well maintained car doing 90mph.

I overtake a car in the middle lane (surprise surprise) doing 70mph. The car is driven by someone who's been at a party all night drinking and taking drugs. His car is uninsured , no tax, no MOT and has 4 bald tyres.

We past a speed camera that "clocks" both of our speeds.

3 questions ;

1. Who gets the 3 points and £90? Fine

2. Who is driving safely?

3. Who would you prefer to be sharing the M1 with?

You'll get 6 points for 90mph

All good points but unfortunately this thread is full of the holier than thou brigade, guaranteed to be the ones creating queues on national speed limit roads by doing 40 and creating such a huge tail back it's impossible to overtake.

And in case you do not understand why I think you are as much a danger as the other driver, they may have been partying all night and not fit to drive but you are traveling at 90MPH and are paying so little attention to the road that you have failed to see the speed camera that has caught you speeding. The fact that the road conditions are good and the road is very quiet removes your only possible excuse that the volume of traffic was such as to reduce your view of the road ahead.

TO MAKE MONEY!

Get yourself a road angel or something like that.

"I've never driven on an autobahn, but my understanding of it was that overall there were less accidents, but when there were accidents they were bigger and more severe.

"

It is a myth that there is no speed limit on Autobahn's many of them are restricted to 120kph (72mph) most of the time. The road surface on many German roads is shocking, so the actual mileage of unrestricted safe road is actually a lot smaller than imagined which skews the accident statistics.

I do like the French system of different speeds for wet or dry roads, that makes sense and puts some feel good factor to obeying the law,

Fact is in the UK you have an arbitrary figure no matter what time of day or weather etc. policed by arbitrary machines that will not fine you for driving at 30mph past a school at 8:45am in the wet on a foggy morning watching your speedometer rather than the outside of the car, but will for doing 35mph at 2am on a clear dry day.

Problem with that is the arbitrary machines have allowed a reduction in police officers who can differentiate and use the due care and attention law effectively.

Don't whine if you do the crime is relevant, but the crime needs to be sensible, and it isn't always.

You are missing my point !

My point is that cameras measure your speed nothing more nothing less. They do not take into consideration conditions , the way you are driving, your behaviour etc.

Traffic police do. They instantly consider everything and respond accordingly, I've overtaken traffic cops on motorways doing 80-90mph and they haven't batted an eyelid ! I've also been stopped by an unmarked police car as I was doing nearer 100mph and the policeman actually complimented me on my driving but asked me to "back off" a little bit with no further action taken. That's the common sense approach I think we would all welcome.

Further I would point out that your post is in the first person so is referring to you and it is reasonable for anyone to reply to your post in the same terms.

Maybe next time you are inventing a scenario in order to make a point you may want to use the third person, then you will not feel personally attacked and aggrieved when your story gets taken apart.

Just a suggestion.

"My big "problem" with speed cameras;

3 questions ;

1. Who gets the 3 points and £90? Fine

2. Who is driving safely?

3. Who would you prefer to be sharing the M1 with?

The argument that someone could be driving more dangerous is seriously flawed logic and in no way suggests that you are driving safely.

That's the common sense approach I think we would all welcome."

So you have been given fair warning and let off tickets yet you still disregard the law? And you wonder why more don't take the education approach when its clearly not working with people like you?

You'll get 6 points for 90mph

All good points but unfortunately this thread is full of the holier than thou brigade, guaranteed to be the ones creating queues on national speed limit roads by doing 40 and creating such a huge tail back it's impossible to overtake."

See.....there you are again making assumptions about people

I thought married men cheaters raised hackles best in the forums but speeders seem to be beating that.

It's not speeders that raise my hackles (we all speed at times). Its the ones who complain when they get caught!

"I totally disagree

The police put signs up warning you , you are in a speed trap area, the cameras are painted yellow.

The mobile vans are big, and white and have red / yellow chevrons on them usually parked randomly and easy to spot . Police cars have massive lights on top and various reflective parts.

Police officers have to wear high viz when standing on the side of the road doing speed traps.

Your sat nav will tell you that your approaching a speed trap.

It's a simple case of reading the road ahead ,

what more do you want the police to do

This is supposed to add common sense to the conversation not criticise anyone

Absolutely correct!!! If you cannot see a f'ing great van with dayglow chevrons on the back then you are not paying attention."

Or driving way too fast?
