"I've purposely never watched it " You really should. Ranulph Fiennes is unsurpassable. One of the greatest performances by an actor. A beautiful film crafted brilliantly. No one can say the subject is easy but it is worth watching, the music is sunning and the film itself is basically flawless.

"Although it's a difficult subject, it is a film everyone should watch and ensure a sequel never needs to be made." whilst i agree with your sentiments, history sadly post ww2 tells us that genocide whilst not on the same scale has takn place several times and it could be said still is in Syria today..

He ended up in by camp in Scotland where he met my. Nana. He might have been on the "wrong" side but he fought for his country and I am damn proud of what he did to escape and keep fighting. Wars make for remarkable people doing remarkably tenacious things for what they believe in.

"Watching films like this make me think of my grandad who was posted to belsen to help exhume mass graves, identify the bodies and rebury them. the things he saw affected him for the rest of his life. It also reminds me that history is written by the victors. There is very little said about the use of concentration camps by the Spanish in Cuba (1896) over 100,000 dead. The USA in the Phillipines (1899-1902) uncertain numbers dead in camps but estimated at 200,000. Britain against the Boers (1900-02) 28,000 Boers dead (22,000 under age 16) at least 14,000 natives dead, no investigation was carried out into native deaths so this may be higher. And as mentioned before we have seen further acts of genocide in Rwanda, Bosnia and others. It seems that no matter how intelligent we believe humanity to be, we appear too stupid to learn lessons from history." I was aware of the British camps but was unaware that the USA had predated them. Certain countries seem to advance through civilisation at various rates, it seems some countries go backwards. Humanity seems to struggle to learn by the mistakes of others, preferring to only learn by their own mistakes. I wonder what will happen on the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan. I have a feeling it will be back to square one.
