surgery funding

following on from a comment on another thread and having just seen a news article about a 9 year old boy who had his surgery cancelled a week before his op because NHS England have decided to stop funding the surgery he needed it got me thinking.

I naively thought years ago that if you needed an operation you went to the hospital and you got it (i knew it wasnt that simple but you et my drift). The thought of having to fight tooth and nail to get an op you know they can do and have bee doing for some years must be awful.

This little boy saying how he just wants to ride a skateboard almost had me in tears

I know the pot is not endless and i know tough decisions need to be made and i know news articles tug at the heartstrings but it just got to me

Surely if they stopped the funding for it it should.mean no new people go on the list not those who are waiting get cancelled? Seems very harsh

children whose treatment ad started continue with it bt as he hadnt started the treatment it got cancelled even though the family were told it was going ahead.

It's also weird when you can get certain operations and medicines in one area of the country but not others, making it a bit of a postcode lottery with healthcare.

It's always been like that sadly and remains so but I'm still baffled by having to wait till your old enough for a surgery!! Again surely if you need a surgery then your old enough for it

My dad was signed off work sick in agony with tennis elbow, his job entails lots of lifting etc and after trying every other avenue possible like acupuncture and allsorts which he paid for he went to the doctor and they sent him over the hospital to chat to a specialist. They pretty much told him they didn't do the operation for that any more as it was pointless and rarely had a good outcome.

By this point his sick pay had ended and him and my mum were struggling to pay bills etc on SSP. He ended up having to go and see a HR person about wether he'd ever be able to return to work and when he explained everything they sent him up to guys and at thomas in London and they sorted him out, gave him the op and post OP care and he's now back at work.

They said there that it was shocking that the hospitaj turned him down for the operation as it was affecting his ability to work and that they should of done it 2 years ago!!

My son had an operation on his eyes many years ago.

A mistake was made and we had a difficult time for a while but thankfully he was ok in the end.

We were advised that we should sue and get around £20k.

Very tempting but as our boy was ok we decided not to be greedy and let someone enjoy a new hip or whatever.

i understand this with children as thei bone have fairly delicate growth plates etc which if damaged can cause problems however this little boy on te news is actually growing out of the most effective age range for the surgery he needs, the older he gets the less success the operation has

Exactly! My dad needs New knees but has to wait till he's in his 50's or 60's! I'm waiting to see if I can have labiaplasty done, I'm in pain with them 24/7 because they keep getting caught on my underwear. I'd do it myself if I could! If I had the £3,000 for it I'd have it done tomorrow!

Well we spend circa £70b on weapons of mass destruction but 9 year olds cannot avail of the latest technology? In countries that do not have a defence budget that cripples the economy they have a sensible health policy! Go figure!

It's bloody ridiculous!! My dad's a groundsman so is constantly on his knees putting drains in, concrete slabs etc!
