Europe's largest and most notorious low frills airline are looking at starting trans-atlantic services in the next few years...

starting from 10 quid upwards but you would have to pay extra for everything.. so it would likely cost somewhere nearer 150 quid!

so the question is... would you fly no frills on a potential 8hr flight???

I've done easyjet to Egypt - and always use them for city hops.

Now if they did trans-Atlantic I'd give them a punt - but Ryanair?

i did ryanair once newcastle to dublin... that was enough for me....

60 minutes of that was bad... i couldn't imagine 8hrs of it...

plus I can imagine there version of "new york" isn't going to be JFK or Newark, but more likely some po-dank airport on the tip of long island!!!

Entertainment : Use yer own devices.

Food - 5kg is a lot of homemade butties and treats.

Miles from anywhere - not necessarily a bad thing.

If the £10 "flight" didn't become £500 then i'd consider it.

Only in term time though.

Yes, but only if it was east, in fact, a 12hr flight would reach s/e Asia & if that was just a few hundred quid, I'm in!!

No I wouldnt. Ive never flown with Ryanair and im never going to.

I usually fly BA when I go to New York. I have flown with Virgin but I prefer BA, its a good service, good times etc and the service is excellent. Its bad enough being on a flight for 8 hours, you want to be as comfortable as you can be

If they were flying long haul, they'd have to improve comfort/seating, that's a no brainier, but of all the airlines that I've flown long haul with (is 8 hours considered long haul?), Emirates was the very best followed by Thai, Singapore, Air NZ & Quantas but at the very bottom for comfort & service was Lufthansa & BA, & they really were poor!!

There's only two ways of looking at short hops with Ryanair; cheap & cheerful or cheep & nasty!!

Not been a flyer for a few years now...

But would agree about BA, however would have to say that if I had a choice of carriers, based on my experiences, top of my list was always Cathay Pacific with KLM a close second (would rather fly from Manchester to Schiphol and from there to the States than catch a direct BA flight.

We've just flown Ryanair to Marrakech and it was perfectly acceptable. It was a three and a half hour flight and it was quite comfortable. If they could fly me to the east coast if America for £150 I'd be going two or three times a year.

As Brits living in the US it might improve our playtime (which is decidedly slower than the UK!) - it would be like taking a British Rail train only cheaper so we're all for it!

They are bad on short hops - but importantly 'cheap'! - that's why they've become so successful, but any worse than Easyjet, BA or BMI? not in my experience, just cheaper.

Personally, unlike some, I don't give a damn about being pampered on 1 or 2 hour flights, in fact I'd quite happily be standing - or leaning against the bar, - even better!!

Spent 8 hours on a British rail standing for much of it, Ryan air is not so bad, more leg room than united airlines and you can so easily carry your own entertainment these days. Bring it on!

No way would I fly Ryanair transatlantic, by the time you add all the extras on it probably won't come out a lot cheaper anyway.

They probably won't obtain landing rights into the major airports so you'll pay a fortune for ground transportation.

No low cost airline has ever had longevity on long haul flights, apart from Freddie Layker at a push.

Agree about Cathay & KLM, they've a really good name, as does Virgin Atlantic, to be fair, - in contrast to Virgin's budget flights down under.

But I found Emirates to be unbeatable; especially the food!!

I would not use them for long haul. I prefer first or business class on scheduled airlines long haul, and dont really like standard economy that much. Worst thing is the number of overnight flights, where flat beds and fully reclined seats just wont be found in nasty bucket airline brands.

i dont understand peoples problem with this airline, being honest.

if it wasnt for them, me and V wouldnt be together.

i have just booked a return flight, to ireland, for less than £20, and regularly pay less than £50 for our flights to see each other every other week.

aerlingus is full of shit with their £20 flights, as they only have 1 eahc day, and usually flying at 3am on a wednesday or something.

im a big guy and i have no real problems with the seats on the flights.

i sleep for the hour im sat in it anyway, so yes, i probably would use them to go to america, if i were that way inclined.

Yes, you're correct, nobody has;

Bands & wagons come to mind

In the last 5 or 6 years for short hops I've used BA, BMI, Easyjet & Ryanair;

All four of them were almost identical for the flight duration, BMI were possibly the best (& second most expensive) except they completely fucked up my return journey & left me stranded on my return journey.

Ryan air stung me the most for excess luggage, Easyjet was the worst for boarding, - baaaaaaa baaaaaaaaa, & BA was average but by far the most expensive - but with the oldest planes.

The best part of BA was that it was half empty!!

Ryanair had the newest planes with easyjet & BMI somewhere in the middle. BMI had the best service followed by Ba with easyjet & Ryanair roughly level pegging.

The main difference? - Ryanair was the cheapest!!

These were all one hour flights, so who really cares, - the biggest hassles were at the departing airports; Heathrow, Gatwick & Luton, - the destination airports were fine for both arrivals & departures.

Those were my experiences; not much difference, apart from the price!!

Internationally I've flown with Qantas, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Continental, Garuda and Japan Airlines. Japan Airlines were the best and I'd always choose them over anyone else.....unless I could save heaps of dosh! So show me what you've got Ryanair! (same goes to you -Ryan-)

Garuda was the absolute worst! They put me off flying for 10 years.

It took 52 hours to travel from Australia to England, island hopping in Indonesia for a day, 45 minute flights, then 2 hours waits. To top that all of we landed in Paris with such force that the 45 minute stop at the airport (only half an hour off finishing the journey from hell) was extended to 4 hours while they checked the plane for damage. When we eventually landed at Gatwick everyone clapped and cheered because they were all so relieved.

The next time I flew I had to take valium to be able to get on the plane!

No I didn't know, I'm pretty sure it wasn't on my ticket. I think we stopped at 4 different islands and had to get off the plane and sit in the waiting room for a couple of hours each time.

The flight seemed to on forever, I read the whole trilogy of Lord of the Rings on it!

The landing in Paris was horrendous. I had a window seat and was looking out, all I could see was clouds then all of a sudden there was the runway only a few feet below us. I'd done enough landings to know we were coming in too fast and sure enough the bang when we landed was terrifying. All the overhead baggage compartments flew open and bags went everywhere, the oxygen masks dropped in front of our faces, everyone was screaming. And then they made us sit on the plane for another 4 hours while they checked it over, which was torturous as it was such a short flight until it was all over. I felt like getting out and walking!

I finished LOTR just as we landed at Gatwick though

Sorry, you said 52 hours.

London to Sydney via Asia is about 22 hours plus, say, 3 hours refueling that means your flight was 27 hours late on a 25 hour flight!!!

Don't suppose you were compensated?

I don't remember how many hows were actually flying and how many were in airports.

I discovered Japan Airlines after that and they are great. They fly up closer to the pole so the journey is shorter. It's in 2 parts, 9 hours and 12 hours I think. They look after you really well on the plane and the meals are sushi, which I love. An added benefit is that most Japanese people are small so you don't get squashed in your seat by a huge neighbour

It's 12 hours from London to Japan, then 8 or 9 to Australia.

It was always one of the cheapest when I used it.

They have "western" options on the menu

or Brisbane? Singapore to Auckland is about 12 hrs so that would be about 9 to Brisbane .........but I thought Japan would be further????? Anyway - there's not a lot in it.

I feel sorry for anyone who went through that hell through Indo, though; I think I would of bailed out earlier & had a week at a beach to get over the first half of it - if I could!!

15 hours direct from Dubai to Sydney is the worst flight I've ever had - & that was because I was stuck in the centre of the middle row & pinned in by people & there hand luggage with no sleep for a couple of days & my legs were cramping up after the first hour; that was my hell, - I'm too fidgety to have anything but hatred for long haul stuff.

I like to stand & hang out by the galley - grovelling for titbits & beer!

It's to Brisbane. The return flight (Brisbane to London) is split in two and you stay overnight in Japan. I really liked that because Japan is almost in the same timezone as Eastern Australia, only 1 hour different, and I landed at about 8pm, so it was off the hotel, shower and bed for the night, then back to the airport at a reasonable time in the morning. All so much more civilised than trying to sleep on the plane.

Yeah, I'm with you there; flying north/south (if you can) certainly eliminates jet lag, in fact, if it was possible, & you flew dew north from here & kept going, you'd cross the pole & be flying due south down the western Pacific coast past Japan & directly to Australasia!

That's actually the shortest route but no airline in their right mind would fly over that huge expanse of nothingness when there's no plan B if something went wrong; - any survivors would be Polar Bear fodder!

Only if they are much cheaper than every other airline. We have purposefully avoided them and paid a little more for any other airline for years. But they are changing their ways. Their boss who is 'half marmite' (you either hate him) has realized people do not like Ryanair. So we will see.

But that is short haul only.

I would never get on a long haul with them. To start with they're gonna need some new planes.

They actually have the newest fleet of planes in Europe, have done for years.

That guy O'leary is even more bitter than marmite & has a shocking PR record, but it hasn't stopped them growing at an alarming rate of nauts, - I doubt if he'll change, somehow.

If he isn't cheap enough, he'll fail - but judging by his business head so far, I doubt it!!

It's very easy to say "I'd never fly with Ryanair"

Sadly on many routes there is very little, or even no alternative. We regularly fly from the Dusseldorf area of Germany to Alicante and the only alternative to Ryanair can be as much as four times the price and include a stop at Palma, almost doubling the flight time.

Also anyone thinking of going to Cap d'Agde this summer should try to get a direct flight from the UK to Beziers without flying Ryanair.

Like them or not, they have the routes and many people (like us) are stuck with them.

As for long haul airlines Ryanair could not be any worse than Air Chance (sorry France) diabolical service.

Google Ryan Air, there's a very recent problem that travellers experienced.

I work in the industry but I'm not going repeat what I know in a forum.

What I will say is though like everything in life you get what you pay for. They meet the demand for no frills short haul air travel well, whether the public want that on a long haul flight will remain to be seen, historically it seems not.

Great company as long as you can read know how to use scales and have the correct sized bag

Fly to Belguim and Germany about once a month and have no problem with the service

People who get extra charges are mainly those who take a extra cpl of kilos of luggage or don't print off the passes etc

If it says 10 kilos why take more and run the risk of a extra charge

Play by his rules read the small print and you'll get a bargain and yes you are now allocated seats

I wouldn't mind paying the airfare and flying with Ryanair. After all its just a cheap seat to another country. If i have to pay 20 quid for crap food, I am being served food at 600 mile per hour a mile high in the sky. Just sit there, watch a film on your phone, read a book and get off when it lands, just a means to an end.

Free pre-allocated seats, ticket prices that can be dearer than luxury airlines when all the screw you down extras are added; you can get free booze, snacks and drinks, as well as checked bags on scheduled airlines, and you get good assistance and support on airlines, especially if they have partner networks. I've been stranded a long way from home, when aircraft fail, but put on a partner's plane within a couple of hours - budgets don't really do that, you'll struggle to even get acknowledgement of your very existence, let alone some help.

Plus, it's the likes of ryanair who have not supported passengers when mayhem ensues, such as Iceland's volcanoes - resisting their legal obligations to financially help their passengers. When they try to flout the law, I wonder what else they try to cut costs, standards and obligations on.

Despite all of the complaints, whinges, news articles etc..........people still 'choose' to fly with them so they're doing something right. It's not as if there aren't alternative airlines to get to the same destinations.

She is off sick at the momment, stress issues

Never had a complaint against RyanAir, know what I am buying, take a sarnie if it's a meal time flight and have suitable luggage so it never costs more than the advertised price.

I have used Ryanair, and they are definately a no frills airliner, but they are not a budget or cheap option as they claim. The flights I have taken were on time and we got there ok.

When I fly to Spain, I use Monarch which doesn't claim to be a budget airline, yet the overall cost is about the same or in some cases cheaper. And to top it all, it's an all round better experience.

You have to look past the gimmicks and hoodwinking adverts that condition you into thinking you are getting a good deal.

If you want an honest opinion about Ryanair, or any other airline, check out SKYTRAX, which is a passenger opinion site. Then make your mind up. Having just returned from a holiday from the far east, where we were travelling for almost a day, each way with a reputable legacy carrier, we made very sure we did our research. We all have choices to make as to who we choose to fly with. Where a holiday can be affected hugely on the quality of the flight, safety, before, during and after customer service, we think it is as important a choice as where you go or stay. We rather think that the model for LCC that Ryanair is better suited to short under 3 hours flights, same as Southwest and that fares should reflect the service you expect...As for airlines that we have had bad experiences with: Garuda is up there, although they are far better now, there are plenty of " dubious" carriers, some of whom are blacklisted by the EU. Personally a 2 day epic journey to the far east from London on BOAC ( better on a camel ) back in the 70's in my childhood sticks in my mind.

Due to certain health issues I cannot do economy on any long haul anymore. I am currently saving to gi back to Oz. But even if I could I wouldn't do long haul with Ryanair as I'd probably need another holiday to get over the flight. You can take all the pillows you like but relaxation is not something I associate with them and it would be exhausting after 8+ hours.

Despite the opinions displayed on this thread, Ryanair are the most popular airline in Europe and they are invariably on time.

The seat space / leg room argument is simply not true and there is no difference in the leg room available on any Ryanair flight to the American Airlines flights out of a Manchester into Chicago.

Ryanair have turned the airline industry on its head and fair play to them for doing so.

I have flown Ryanair twice once to Dublin because I was given vouchers and once to Rome......they were ok...personally I use easy jet from gatwick or Luton or mid range carriers as I live close to Heathrow
