Hi x question for the techie types x

I regularly log on to fab from my phone at work

Our work doesn't have wifi you can access as its all password protected x there is wifi but I only ever log on using 3G x

Today one of the tech guys suggested that its possible for all the traffic to be monitored and pin pointed to the device when surfing on your phone in the building?

Is this possible ?

Do I need to curtail my daytime surfing of fab or can my organisation monitor how long I'm online and therefore not working?

Any one experienced similar - let me know xxxx

As far as I know if you are using the works wifi then yes they can monitor the traffic and all the devices that use it.

if you are using your own networks 3g then no your work cannot monitor it unless they are hacking your device.

It can be done. But not by people at your work if you are using 3G.

Even if they could monitor the usage unless it is through a works device that is register to you or you access through a personal login how are they going to pin point it.

They can have signal repeaters installed in the building, for works phone , eg if your company uses one net , and then yes they can monitor your phones, as your phone would connect through that repeater

You would not know if the building had signal repeaters unless you specifically asked

But seriously any doubt over using a phone for fab in the work place , just don't use it .work is way more important than fab

Exactly. If they approach you about this and you are only using 3G then it is classed as illegal hacking and they could be hot with a law suit x

Hmmm, probably have you for gross misconduct if your viewing porn during work time and bringing the business into disrepute. If you used their computers, gross misconduct. Using your phone on a break, that's your business but probably frowned upon by your senior colleagues even if they do it. Also never charge your phone in work. That's defrauding the company. Using a company mobile phone to view porn or anything that your bosses don't agree with is probably going to get you the boot! My advice is, leave your phone in your bag when in work. Don't make personal calls on the company phone. Listern to the tech men. They usually give you a gypsies warning!

As far as I'm aware if they could try all they would be able to see is your phones wireless mac address so how they could tell it be you is needle in haystack as won't be able to see phone make or phone number ect so I think you be safe

What he said - in fact if your company were monitoring your private browsing they would be breakinb the law

If you that worried download a proxy app that will tunnel your network traffic to stop prying eyes most public wifi is visible so makes sense if you want to be careful.

Very good advice.... 3g repeating/sniffing is not something that companies usually do, but if they are investigating other concerns within the organisation such as insider trading, industrial espionage, fraud or HR issues they may use that to gather evidence and you could just get caught up in it too...

Using 3g mobile network ur company can not know or see what u are accessing. Due to data protection the network can not provide details to your company of when, where and what was accessed.

The police are the only people who can get this information.

Even that takes time to get. They would only do that if you committed a serious crime and they needed ur mobile information as evidence.

Company wifi is different. Depends if ur a small company with no i.t. dpt. That's the case fab ur heart out.

Bigger companies with i.t. dpts most likely mean yes they have the ability to see what content was accessed but can not see who. It would only lead back to a mobile device and as long as ur not doing it on a company mobile phone they will never know who it is.

Lot of bold assertions here.

Companies are entitled to monitor *all* usage of their equipment (hopefully for obvious reasons). Most companies explicitly make employees sign a form, so that there's no doubt about it, but you don't need a form.

The only safe way to browse from a monitored location is to have access to a proxy server, and VPN or SSH into that.

Take the hint! I used to work in IT for banks and government. The sideways warning was often given when we were told something needed investigating but didn't have the resource / kit to do it properly.

Very good chance someone spotted something over your shoulder and reported it to management.
