"I'm nipping up to Newcastle next week and I am seriously thinking of driving having looked at the fares. Train geeks, what circuitous route do I need to take to reduce my fare from a starting return price of £123? I can't help with the route but have you thought of a rail card unless it's just a one off trip " Discounts aren't bad

"I don't know how you would do it from your area, but a few years ago I found a little loophole in Virgins fare structure. I used to travel from Preston to London quite regularly and to use the train from Preston at around 9.20am was well over 100 quid, but the later one after 10am was only 40. So I looked further down the line and after 10am from Crewe was the same 40 quid. The train that left Preston at 9.20 (ish) left Crewe just after 10am. So I bought 2 tickets, one from Preston to Crewe which cost around 15 quid and another fro Crewe to London at 40, but stayed on the same train from Preston that would have cost me well over 100. A bit confusing but it worked." That's the sort of wiggle I need to work out. I need to understand the route from Kings Cross to Newcastle as my next bit of learning for today.

"it sometimes cheaper to fly" Unfortunately, not to Newcastle it would seem. I can get to Ireland, France, Spain and other places cheaper than to Newcastle.

"Try east coast trains. We always use them when we travel to London. Spotted red hanky I think they do train travel. " I've checked both of those. I think they are on to me trying to split the fares now as it's getting more expensive looking to join the train further up the line. Thanks for all the help. The wisdom of the forum will come up trumps at some point.

It's gone up by £15 trying to do it as singles from different places. I'm going slightly bonkers here. I think my brain is too small for this gargantuan task.

"try grand central to sunderland and see if they have any cheap tickets left... then get the metro into newcastle..... other than that... not a fan of ticket splitting as it can cause issues if trains are late or cancelled.... but.... see what you can find to york... then see what you can find york to newcastle..." I've been waiting for you as the Train Fare Guru. Searching your route suggestions now.

"Jump the Barrier " Have you seen how short I am? Crawling under may work better. Fabio has given me an option which I am working through at the moment. If that fails I may ask for someone to drive me in return for dinner. There must be someone on here returning to Newcastle next week.

It's one straight road from my home to Newcastle. A long road but I really only have to keep going straight. Perhaps if I had some stop off points I could begin the drive the night before and arrive with a smile on my face?

"It used to be the case that 2 or 3 short haul tickets worked out a good bit cheaper than one long haul. A return Glasgow - Aberdeen was much more expensive than buying Glasgow - Perth, Perth - Dundee and Dundee - Aberdeen and back." I can reduce the outward journey cost by £30 doing that (thanks to Flick's suggestion) but I'm not having any luck reducing the return journey unless I stay another couple of nights. The cost of staying longer eradicates the savings on the train.

"Have a look via the trainline.com " Not the best site to use at all! Go to National Rail`s website and this will get you the best prices. Not sure of your journey but it can be sometimes cheaper to "split" your journey e.g. Plymouth to Taunton/Taunton to Bristol is cheaper than Plymouth to Bristol but still uses the same train! You don`t even have to get off, just produce your ticket for the appropriate section of the journey!

Basically valid in Wessex, the Home Counties, Kent, Essex etc. and gives 1/3 off discount of off peak tickets. One really usefull one they do is the One Day Travelcard which is travel to and from London combined with travel on train, bus tube and DLR.
