I was thinking earlier about great books, but which have been adapted into lousy films.

Until recently a lot of Stephen King books made for very ropey films. Christine was a decent film, but no where near as good as the book. The Dark Half, fantastic book, rubbish film.

However, for me, the most disappointing has been Dune. Beltingly good book, but the film was rubbish, although not without some charm. It had a great cast and although no end of money was spent on it, everything just looked dodgy. The mini-series was no better. I suppose if P Jackson had directed Dune, it would have been an 8 part epic...

So anyway, good books, bad films?

Apparently they are due to remake I.T!! Film scared the bejesus out of me when I was a kid!! But the ending was complete shite with that big spider and the book was way better x

Don't think I have ever come across a film that was as good as the book unless you include short stories which were embellished , shawshank redemption and Benjamin button were both brilliant !

The film of Dune sucked!

I haven't seen a decent James Patterson adaptation.

The Hobbit so far has been a bit wank. They've tried to turn it into another LOTR. The Hobbit was never that dark, it was more a fairy tale, for a much younger audience compared to LOTR. Where the fuck did the Orc's come from??? There's none in the book!

The Lovely Bones was a far superior book to the film, as were The Silence of The Lambs and Red Dragon.

Id love to see Richard Laymon's horror books in film though, they would make the best horror films ever if done well...he surpasses Stephen King tremendously!!

he he I remember reading part of the Jaws book when I was younger and getting rather "excited" by a particular scene involving a woman, a car, and something glistening and wet

Fire walks within (twin peaks, Laura Palmer) story one of my fave books but the film was just too weird x

And yes the twilight series especially Breaking Dawn split in to two films and they still missed out loads and the last fight scene just shocking making it into a vision/dream x

Harry Potter now I saw the first three films before reading the books. After reading the books though I got quite angry as they miss so much of the books out x

The Harry Potter movies are very disappointing after the books. With the exception of Order Of The Phoenix which just draaaagged on as a book but was a bit more contained on the screen.

I thought the book was as bad as the film but then I hate Dan Brown's writing style as it's far too dumbed down, seemingly for American audiences: Describe what's going to happen, describe it happening, describe what just happened - the beginners guide to writing like Dan Brown!

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Fabulous book. The film bizarrely changed a lot of the story and then tagged the end of the fourth book on. Seriously unfunny where the books are laugh out loud hilarious.

From memory, 'jaws' was the first book that I read outside of school, & from what I remember - is still a damn good movie. IMHO, the unbelievably crappy sequels kill the original.

I liked Cloud Atlas, thought they did a pretty good job of an 'unfilmable' book. Particularly liked the conceit of actors playing multiple parts.

Seven Years In Tibet:

Albeit a diary, still a very enjoyable book; escaping from a British P.O.W camp no less than three times - over the Himalayas - & discovering Tibetans/Tibetan Buddhism, & a young Dalai Llama, even with the stardom of Brad Pitt, they made the bad mistake of filming in the southern U.S, Instead of 'Buddhaland'.........it killed the movie, IMHO.
