Last week there was a thread about what kids can and can not take to school etc.

I just got a newsletter from my sons school saying there is a rise in the amount of allergic reactions to Kiwi fruit and the school nurse has advised us that they should not be taken to school.

Anyone else had this problem with the good old Kiwi fruit or anything else other than nuts?

No I have heard of the nut allergy, but not the kiwi one.

Kids apparently should not eat peanuts ect until they are at least ten anyway, the oil is not good for theirlungs, and the lungs are not fully developed until then, and of course the choking hazard.

Those with a latex allergy are advised to stay away form bananas and kiwi fruit too.

Some people who have latex allergy may also have an allergic response to any of a number of plant products, usually fruits. This is known as the latex-fruit syndrome.[15] Fruits (and seeds) involved in this syndrome include banana, pineapple, avocado, chestnut, kiwi fruit, mango, passionfruit, fig, strawberry and soy. Some but not all of these fruits contain a form of latex.

So this Latex allergy could one day prevent all of these fruits from being eaten at school eh? So much for trying to give our kids fresh fruit to eat instead of the junk everyone talks about.

I think it's absolute crap! The fact that the schools are not encouraging healthy eating is great! But if anyone told me what I could and couldn't feed my child, I don't think I'd be too happy...

Lots of kids have allergies to wheat and lactose, should bread and milk be banned too?

As it should be! Healthy eating needs to be promoted, but not forced, it's all about everything in moderation, I wasn't overweight until adulthood, I had either crisps or chocolate AND fruit and nuts in my packed lunch as a kid, a BALANCED diet never did me any harm as a kid. Surely if your kid's allergic to nuts or kiwi, you'd have taught them the common sense not to eat them out of their friend's packed lunch, right?

Right !! maybe the schools should have allergy free eating cubicles for the kids and let the others eat nice fresh fruit and veg

I was asked by the preschool this morning if they could take a picture of my daughter's lunch to use as an example of what a healthy lunch should be, for the other parents

Nice compliment to you as a parent though I guess

I'm allergic to kiwi fruit....and found out the hard way! Even anything that has come into contact with kiwi is dangerous much like nut allergy (I'm also allergic to cashew nuts...but not peanuts for some obscure reason). Having worked in education for many years I can understand why this request has been made. Under the circumstances I don't think it is unreasonable.

Over the rainbow, under the bridge

Schools are far more cautious these days due to the readiness of some parents to sue them.

Its also for those children who are allergic to nuts as whilst they won't eat them, the nut residue is on the children's hands who have eaten them which can be passed on during play etc

Not particularly obscure as I am allergic to a certain aspect of almonds but not any other nut

However as I have said, the residue from those items will be on the children's hands which they can pass to those children who have allergy

No nuts or nut based products aren't allowed in a lot of schools. Your kids school should have advised you of this if there are children in their school with nut allergy

It's a 50/50 decision. You want them to eat healthy but you wouldn't want to hurt any 1 else. Turn the tables round imagine it was ur child allergic to something would you want the school to do something, me yes. Yes seen kids go into annafelactic shock before it's not nice.

Some weeks ago in Ireland a young child had an allergic reaction to something while she was out shopping, she forget the magic pen (medicine in a shot) her mother didn't have her hang bang. The mother ran to a chemist and they refused to give her anything- the girl died shortly later.

As the mother later said they never went anywhere without the pens so accidents do happen and she blames herself just as much.

Normally it's just that class that may be affected as most classes eat in the class.

Now that changed any 1 mind.
