24 hour gym

Hi All,

Seen a local gym that offers 24 hour opening. Sounds like a good option for me as it gives me the chance to go whenever I want/need. However the concept of being 24 hour and unstaffed at most of the times I would go seems a bit strange. Anyone got any experience of such gyms and able to offer any advice or comments, it would be interesting to hear what you have to say.

Not had any experience of it. But if i had one nearby i would definately be a member due to odd working patterns. I cant see it being a problem not having staff, how often do you actually require their help? Also if there is an emergency i am sure there is a procedure in place ! Steve xxx

Buy some weights and you can have your own 24hr gym at home, you can even lift weights when you get up in the night to pee!

they are opening one up near me, which is grand as then i could go at 3 in the morning when ii finish work and actually have some energy lol

Unstaffed would worry me and to me raises a number of safety issues. What if you are alone and have a fall?

I'd have thought it would be illegal to be unstaffed. A gym can be a dangerous environment, between people overdoing it, or being too optimistic on the bench press.

Mind you, statistically speaking, the most dangerous sport in Britain is Bowls. Apparently more people keel over doing that than anything else.

The next time anyone asks me if I want to have a duel with rapiers (other anti-aircraft weapons are available) or go for a game of bowls, I know my answer. Not in these boots.

All pure gyms are 24 hours a day and it's great going at midnight and been the only one in there are loads of cameras what are monitored 24/7

I'd imagine that most of the heavy lifting would be done on machines, which typically have various pins and mechanisms in place to stop a person getting trapped under the weights if they attempt to lift to much.

They have one in Southampton I used to use.

They are really good for us that work silly hours.

It wasn't unstaffed though, it always had at least 1 member on site.

They're pretty secure having to use a code to get in and out, and little entrance pods to ensure only one person goes in at a time.

So shouldn't be any hassle from fights, thieves etc. There's lots of cameras too and emergency help buttons.

As for cardiac arrest or stroke, yes there would be no one to use the defibrillator.

I'm a member of pure gym.......... Never had a problem, feels safe even in the wee hours of the morning, CCTV everywhere and monitored all the time. Great value for money gyms.

Whats needed is sauna, jacuzzi etc, and get some swinging friends in, after getting your muscles pumped. Guessing they dont have these, as probably safety risks.

The gym I go to is 24hr. It's great, as some other local gyms don't open until 6:30 and later. Some people need to get there earlier because of work.

Pure gym sounds good to me, they seem to have found a niche market. Theyre a rapidly expanding business,I'll be shocked if a few others dont follow suit

There's one near me, but the guy who runs it is a bit of a tool, doesn't like you to lift any more than him, not keen on deadlift, you must NEVER drop the weight, no chalk. All a bit too much like training at David Lloyd without the poshness for me. While training at odd hours really appeals to me, I like the social side of my gym too.

I use a 24 hour gym and have gone at midnight or 1am and I have always felt safe although how quiet it is feels a bit strange at first when you are used to them being packed, but only 4 or 5 people are there. They do have security guards on site at night watching all the cameras so if anything happens they can help. But they just won't have any normal staff in to ask advice or how to use equipment etc. was there anything specific you are concerned about?

We have one similar but its a bit spooky late at night all I think about is the scream movies.
