New West Coast Line

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Will someone now take the decision to invest in a new West Coast line?

No trains in or out in any direction due to landslides, washed out land under the track and water, water everywhere.

The West Country is now out of reach.

Perhaps the money may be better spent sacking the Environment Agency, on block, ans setting up a new agency which, if nothing.else, actually listens to advice from specialist technical experts.... IMHO.

Why would they listen to the experts? All a new agency would do is change to logo, make everyone redundant and then re-hire them.

I think the West Country needs to rise up and demand a new line.

Maybe its time for HS3.

Scrap the one to the north and just build one that goes from London to Penzance.

Even bringing the existing but abandoned cuttings and trackways into use would make sense.

Not when your relatives have huge shares in the company wanting to build a brand new line to Birmingham Airport.

Fair point... ( with resigned exasperation)

Now, do we want central government to pay for a nice new line, so that the private sector can strip off the profits and make no maintenance investments...???

Newcastle and Gateshead

ooooh... transport... my wheelhouse...

technically you mean the south west main line as opposed to the west coast (thats the one that runs from london to glasgow via west midlands and north west)

yes it was a freak storm.. and to be honest I always wondered how safe it was regardless of how scenic it was.. and to be honest they are now saying it was a miracle it lasted so long

but it does seem like there was no planning in that there would only be one line in and out.... whereas everywhere else has an alternative route....

the answer being flippant may well be to do with the "beaching cuts" in the 60's

labour did look into it actually during the last government but determined it would be too expensive.... now they may rethink it....

The infrastructure following the Beeching cuts sits there.

This government looked at it too a few years ago but dismissed it in favour of HS2.

It's nothing new. They'll repair the line and forget about it until it happens again. This is the local news paper with a picture of very similar damage in 1855...http://www.plymouthherald.co.uk/Does-look-familiar-Plymouth-rail-line-washed-away/story-20589201-detail/story.html

large parts of it have been developed on so would require extensive expensive tunneling in a national park not an easy or cheap thing to do . does go to show how much lack of forsight there was at the time of beeching

There is an old branch line from just after Exeter to Newton Abbot which will bypass the coastal section, it was only ever a single track so would require doubling up. Wouldn't need to go the old route via Okehampton & Tavistock.

Perhaps we should give the South West a vote on independence and cut them off completely??

And where would all the wealthy 'home counties' types buy their holiday homes then...

Maybe our youngsters living outside of Plymouth would be able to afford to buy a house then though.

We already charge people to get out of Cornwall, what more do you want
