Dialemma

This afternoon I witnessed a homeless person taking a leak in a secluded location. He was subsequently accosted by our boys in blue. He was polite and sincere and not arrested.

It costs 20p to enter most of our Public toilets in Derby.

Given that he had no money, would he have been better off begging for the said 20p and risking arrest for that or just taking his chances

Any dialemmas are welcome to be posted here

I'm glad he wasn't arrested, I can't imagine living a life where even basic needs are accompanied by the fear of arrest.

Neither of the two options you put forward are better than the other in my opinion.

20p just to have a wee, 20p is a lot of money to a homeless person.

On the subject of beggars. I came across a very pale looking one at Kings cross station before Christmas. I looked in my purse and only had a few pence in change so I gave him my last tenner. It was money I had for travel for the rest of the week. I walked

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Access to toilets is actually a big issue in this country when out and about. Access to anything when you are homeless is a whole different ball game.

My dilemmas are much easier to handle.

No I didn't, but I thought about it afterwards

as Ruggers has said, it's a sad indictment of our society that makes us have to come to these judgments

In a secluded location done discretely shouldn't, be a problem. If they're sensible about it it shouldn't cause a problem, free council toilets would be a better solution. His only legal option would have been to piss himself... I haven't actually checked whether that's legal or not, but bar Scotland it's illegal to be homeless in this country, nothing like offering a helping hand when someone is on the bones of there arse. 30 years ago many of these people would have been in asylums.

I'm fairly sure that's when the asylums were still shutting. Google it, there's also loads of urban exploration sites with loads of pictures of them. Some, very few, are open. Broadmoor is a high security asylum.

As a foreigner, that was one of the things I noticed in the big cities. I guess it's all part of the paranoia stemming from IRA bombing in the past (ditto for rubbish bins).

Thing is, if the poor soul had begged for 20p to use the loo (which he could have done for all we know), what are the chances that nobody believed him and gave him nothing?

I'm glad the boys in blue showed some common sense.

I think id be pretty certain before I had a quck pee in public that id be completely secluded and no police were around

He did'nt do a good job of checking how secluded it was,not only did he have the OP watching him but 2 policemen as well

What! I never knew that. So the government has deemed it illegal to be homeless, but have no obligation to put a roof over your head. The mind boggles

Vagrancy act 1824, they were arresting people in London in the 1990's and recently police tried to charge 3 people under it for taking food out of a supermarket skip.

Could he not have popped into a fast food chain or department store and used their free toilets? Sorry regardless of his situation I don't agree he be urinating in the street, it doesn't make for a pleasant environment for anyone when the streets are turned into a open air toilet.

Lots of fast food places and department stores charge to get into the loo now as well, I've seen a lot of it in London and Canterbury also, your can actually go and get a token to get in for free if you ask at the counter I think a lot of it is to stop drug users etc from going in them. (Well that's what I was told by the staff anyway)

Possibly so, had there been one in the immediate vicinity I suppose, but given that this was a short cut through to an area with non of these facilities available, I think he took the best option available to him

It's a joke

Only 2 weeks ago 3 homeless guys were arrested for taking some food mainly cheese tomatoes and mushrooms from a supermarket skip that were destined for the landfill site

They were in court under the 1824 vagrancy act !

I mean come on

Well at least we are all in it together !

I mean our thieving MP's are getting custody too aren't they ?
