just traded in my freelander2 for a new peugeot 308 the difference in road tax is £260 a year for the land rover and just £30 a year for the peugeot. a difference of £230 on just one car.

so my question is, when all the cars are eventually down to the low rate emissions type road tax, just how will the government make up the shortfall in income from road tax??

will they put it on fuel??

No they will just alter how much each band pays.

Somewhere in North Norfolk

Vehicle Excise Duty.

It'll be ok because they are working on how to tax us for oxygen consumption and emissions.

They all ready have put it on fuel, and it has been a strategy since around 2001 when the lower co2 emission vehicle reduced tax rate was introduced.

Brighton - even Hove!

They could tax tyres or increase MOT charges or put in tolls on roads or automated 'pay as you go' electronic thingies....the government will not lose income....

but surely they already are losing income with the amount of cars already on the low rate, some i looked at were taxed at £0

Don't know what they're doing with the money they do get coz they're not spending it on the roads around here. The number of pot holes are on the increase not to mention the poor standard of repairs they did last year.

Vehicle Excise Duty has been general taxation rather than a tax to fund road repairs for quite a few years now.

And keep hiking them every year above the rate of inflation.

Anyone notice that most inflationary increases are more often than not Government costs/charges?
