Haha, yeah heard that too, they're all too modest, django rheinhardt is so emotionally intense for me, I'm not guitarist so don't know for sure, there's a guy called jimmy Rosenberg who's really good too, watch gypsy kids playing guitar on YouTube, he was only about 10 or 12, jaw dropping stuff.

Eddie Van Halen. He changed the way the guitar was played and built, no one has come close to him since 1978.

Interesting facts:

Les Paul didn't play the guitar that bore his name! He thought the Gibson guitar had too many compromises, he had Gibson send him body blanks and he'd build them himself.

B.B. King can't play chords!

Django Reinhardt couldn't play guitar until AFTER the fire that claimed two of his fingers on his left hand. He was a banjo player

5150, the name of Van Halen's ,1986 album, Eddie's studio and his line of amplifiers is the New York police code for the criminally insane.

The first production electric guitar was the Rickenbacker frying pan.

Couple more:

The Gibson SG was originally going to be called the Gibson Les Paul Standard Guitar but Les Paul hated it so they just called it the SG.

Gary Moore bought Peter Green's 1959 Les Paul off him for £60!! It's estimated to be worth over £1,000,000 now even though it was repaired incorrectly back in the 60's ( the neck pickup was wired out of phase and put back in the guitar the wrong way round).

Everyone is talking about note sustain on electrically amplified guitars played by rock gods (and I do have my faves too).

Now listen before saying anything listen to Emre Sabuncuoglu

Heres a youtube link:http://youtu.be/d-4E_6-OrN4

Notice how clear, fast and constant the notes are. Now notice that he is playing a classical acoustic guitar and has no backing or amplification. Then ask yourself how many rock gods could keep up with him...

I suggest the answer is none...

"How could I forget Steve Lukather? The guitarist EVERYONE has heard but hardly anyone has heard of!

didnt he play on jacksons thriller album?"

On Beat It. He played rhythm guitar on Beat It ( Eddie Van Halen played the solo). Lukather is the guitar player for Toto and also a session player who has played on over 2000 top ten albums.

You're missing 2.

Mike Campbell (Tom Petty & the Heartbreaking)

Prince.

Both underrated, and having seen prince with his new rock band last night, he is def up with the best of them.

Yngwie Malmsteen.....The guy is incredible and awful at the same time! He's also a parody of himself (watch him and you'll understand).

Steve Vai....Quite simply a guitar playing machine who looks like he was born holding one.

Satchel (Steel Panther)....They may be a comedy band and former Van Halen tribute act but he can REALLY play.

Alan Holdsworth....Mind blowing!

Robert Fripp. Not just as part of King Crimson, but did some great stuff with Brian Eno and David Bowie.

Which reminds me - Mick Ronson. Not a fantastically adept guitarist technically, but distinctive style.

Python Lee Jackson????? Rod could never be described as a great guitarist. He's a shite singer too.

Weren't Python Lee Jackson an Australian band who'd had no success with the song then looked for a class act to sing it and turn it into a massive hit?

your right i meant to type fruteland jackson but couldnt stop singing in a broken dream

and i do like rods vocals on that track."

The way I heard the Python Lee Jackson story from someone who said he was there at the time went something like this.

They were an Australian band who had come to London to do some recording studio work and their singer was in one way or another a nightmare.

The owner of the studio got more and more frustrated and asked around if anybody knew of a decent singer who could stand in. A then unknown Rod Stewart was recommended and the recording took place. Allegedly Rod was paid in spare parts he needed for an old car he had at the time, and the studio owner had some connection to the motor trade, and Rod also signed away any rights to the recording.

The recordings sat gathering dust for a while then after Rod suddenly found fame were released making the studio owner a small fortune. True? maybe, but a good story nonetheless.

As for guitarists I would go for in no particular order.

Clapton.

Santana.

Blackmore.

Bonnamossa.

Moore.

Harrison.

And the one you have all forgotten the late great Paul Kosoff

I think you will find that Greg allman is a well respected guitarist in his own right as well as Keyboards in the original band, I will give you Larry King coz I was thinking of Albert...so Bass guitarists cannot be considered great ?

I know Gregg Allman plays guitar but it was his brother who was considered 'great', The Allman Brothers have had various other guitarists over the years that were a lot greater than Gregg too (Dickey Betts, Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes).

As for bass players, include 'em if you like but Phil Lynott wasn't a great bass player, stuck to the root like it was going out of fashion, for the most part! Which doesn't mean he wasn't a great songwriter, lyricist and singer who surrounded himself with great guitarists!
