After just having a debate with a friend.

What are your views on the proposed school day starting at nine, ending at six.

And seven weeks school holidays during the course of the year, rather than the amount they get now

Yes I agree, we had allsorts of dicussions on working parents, cutting down child care to keeping them off the streets.

I worked it out out I would proberly only see my daughter a few hours a day too.

That's a longer day than many people work... How are kids meant to do that. What about things like brownies and swimming lessons etc..

Or taking kids to the park after school.

They've clearly never seen how tired my kids are when they get in from school at 3.30.....wonder when they are meant to do their homework, practice their spellings, do their reading, oh and dare I mention, play and be a child? As it is kids are in too much of a hurry to grow up. Bad idea.

We used to start at 9 and finnish at 3 50 and get 8 weeks off at summer god i do miss them hours and that time off but wasnt enough for me so had more days off than went

They reckon between the hours of three and six it will be activities.

So I have said there should no longer be homework then.

Apparently this is not so either.

It is a proven fact most kids don't learn much after lunch.

So how would the kids benefit I ask.

Yes I see both sides to homework.

My daughter has a minimum of 12 hours a week.

If it is not completed a detention will be set, and homework club would be forced.

dont think a longer day is needed, however, a shorter summer holiday and more flexibility through the year as for family holidays would help, not as in children being able to be off when they want, as that is unworkable too, but say a floating weeks holiday that changes every year, but is uniformed by district so primary and secondary schools run the same floating weeks, to stop holiday companies preying on it and upping their charges.

if parents work and cant look after their children after school then maybe more afterschool clubs.

It will more than likely be after school sports and homework clubs.

No need to spend on Child Care and freeing parents to work.

It's all tied into the economy.... never any other reason

I only work while my kids are at school... And I dont fancy not being able to have a family meal. ..

By all means extend the acces to after school clubs but don't force it on kids.. they are going to lose out on valuable family time.

I'm not totally against it.. I can see what they are trying to do but they are going the wrong way about it.

I think it would be better if they kept the holidays as they are and extended the days 9-5, so just adding two extra hours. Those two hours can be filled with things such as swimming, martial arts, cubs/brownies etc, other confidence builders and out of the box learning.

That way every child will be receiving the tools they need to be the best they possibly can be, everyone has the same starting block.

Children from harder backgrounds get a bit of an escape.

Parents are more able to work etc.

There is still time to play/relax once home. Weekends and school holidays would be for bike rides, tree climbing etc..

I feel that 3pm-5pm is just dead time for those that don't attend after school clubs every day of the week, giving everyone (those with working parents, the less fortunate, those that don't have 'supportive parents' etc) a chance to do things they wouldn't normally be able to do and the chance to be on the same playing field as everyone else can only be a good thing.

No homework, only until 4.30/5pm, a snack at 3pm, no changes in the holidays.

It will help working people very much. Especially single parents like my daughter. However her 3 children have after school activities they do out of school. I can't see it being compulsory to attend any clubs or activities after school as a lot of students at the school I worked at had religious school after the school day finished plus clubs. Who will run these clubs too?

It's just a vote pulling tactic I think Cali.

It's designed to provide cheap child care and reduce the benefits bill.

Nothing wrong with either of those I guess but you are right it will limit the hours that parents are able to spend with their own children- for some families that is. Not the very well paid funnily enough.

9-6 is def to long.. They are children not adults. How would they be expected to concentrate for that amount of time! Children need that time before bed to wind down... Have a family meal a talk about their day.. This would never happen!

I don't think it should be compulsory but it is a good idea. My daughters school already have free after school clubs 3 evenings a week. It only runs for an extra hour but great for the children. They even have a play club so they have their time for playing but have sports club and choir too. All fun for them

Teachers certainly don't need longer school hours. They work hard enough already and most when at home too. My friend is often up until the early hours marking work and tests. Doing lesson plans arranging activities to make science fun. She wants to settle down and have a family but she has no time due to already being over worked.

I went to a prep school and then a private (catholic) boarding school in Ireland. And although my day was very regimented and focused on learning from waking up to going to light out the teaching day was quite short being 9.30 till 12.30 and 2 till 4. There was of course set private study time on top of this and very limited recreation time (no TV). Also there were no half term breaks. But I should add that I did get a 12 week summer break rather than the 6 weeks given here.

So the idea that longer school days and terms will make the state system more like the private education is possible if done properly.

Having worked at a few of the top private schools in my experience they actually do much shorter hours than current state schools. The adage the more you pay the less you get is applicable. Two of the top ten in the league tables that I know had two week half terms and at least nine weeks in the summer which made holidays cheaper too.

Schools are under used and teachers paid more than the national minimum. The old saying of "If you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen" is relevant so start educating our kids instead of belly aching. Like the rest of workers if you do not like it find something else, become an MP they are unproductive as well.

The proposal is fair to all and would also reflect in the holiday industry reducing costs for all.

PS. Bring back discipline with it.

Having spent several years as a school caretaker I have seen what goes on and is lacking. More discipline and less interference from parents, teachers have a job to do like everyone else in employment unfortunately other workers spend more time in their place of work than teachers do. In my day teachers were left to get on with the job, now there is too much against them.

A high school in a near town has been doing 8.30 to 5pm for 3yrs,it has been a utter flop,after feb halfterm they return to a 3.10pm finish,it was a goverment experiment which had other changes too.the new headmaster has changed it all back,it didnt work at that school,dont know much about it just through other mums i Chat too

Many European countries have this sort of school hours and the kids do just fine, families still spend time together and it allows both parents to work and be less burdened by childcare.

It wouldn't be the end of the world.

I work full time. My working week is 33.45 and I'm shattered

at the end of it (admittedly I average 40 hours

) but the point is kids would do longer hours than I do!

When would they have time to be kids?!!

If the kids get a better education and better jobs at the end of it fine although though they are not proposing 9-6 strictly just more flexibility and up to that time. Wouldn't it be great if they could get kids playing sports every day and learning more real life skills too.

Don't panic, it won't happen!

Too many lobbyists with a vested interest to allow it. Holiday companies for one, big corporations that have allowed part-time, flexible hours; do you think they'll want to rework all their rotas and timetables? Parents won't allow it to happen either, if they have any sense and the teacher's unions certainly won't.

Just another daft Gove suggestion that should hopefully be another nail in his daft coffin, though Cameron seems to keep him around to make the rest of them look sensible.

Hi very interesting all these comments a friend told me in France kids start school at 07.30 yes thats right 07.30 and finish at 6 and go in on saturday mornings for half day but get no homework. If this is correct what would parents think of this personally I think its way too long

And another advantage of the longer school hours is that as the kids end up having a similar schedule to that of their working parents, once the family is home they all do things together. Such as have dinner. There is no need to feed the kids early and put them sleep by 7 as someone mentioned, the whole family can have dinner together at 8.

The other advantage of this is that kids start eating the same food as parents from an earlier age and parents tend to drink less in the evening as the kids are still awake and with them.

This is my experience from living in a Southern European country.

But I think the children in France have have a Tuesday or Wednesday off.

We have a 5 yr old, when he's collected from school at 15.15, I have to get his tea down him pretty quickly. He's very tired... If he was in school until, 18.00, he would be exhausted. He certainly wouldn't bit in any fit state to learn! So a fairly pointless idea well in my eyes anyway. Children of a young age should have family and play time. Are they trying to take their childhood? School.. Sleep... Eat... Ridiculous!

Finland is at the top of the international league tables.

Start school at 7 years old, no tests for 1st 6 years, all teachers must have a masters degree and socially the equals of doctors and solicitors. 4 hours teaching work and 2 hours developement work a day. No homework until late teens. They do only have 600000 pupils though.
