"Will you take up the Hour of Code challenge? I'm going to give it a go in a couple of weeks. I hope I don't create a virus. " I have no idea what it is.

"Will you take up the Hour of Code challenge? I'm going to give it a go in a couple of weeks. I hope I don't create a virus. I have no idea what it is." It's a challenge. Schools are all going to be teaching computer coding this year. The challenge is to go on the Hour of Code website and see what you can learn in an hour - no matter what your age. I know geeky sorts like you probably can code but as I can't even work out how to switch on some devices it will be a challenge for me.

"Going off the coders I work with one hour of coding would amount to putting their name at the top of the file." I might get as far as an initial then.

"Computer virus or bacterial?" I'll attempt both.

I can write several types of script, but I do it so rarely I have to look a lot of stuff up each time. I can code web sites, though again I don't use CSS often enough to remember it all. I don't write "proper" code. I keep meaning to learn python but haven't gotten round to it. Maybe this will kick start me. I'll go look.

Good because I'll get engrossed and enjoy it. Bad because I will do it rather than do less interesting things I should be doing and which are more important.

"I recently had to use Python to make Calibre - the software I use for managing my Kindle library - do something I wanted to make it do. I enjoyed working it out, and want to learn more of the language. It looks strangely interesting to me, and quite flexible." Bendy like a snake?

"I'm teaching coding already and had no idea how to do it until November. It's easy enough to pick up, but not sure it's going to be a useful life skill for everyone?! Bloody Gove. Grrr " To be fair to Gove (shudders and begs people to not let on that I have been fair to him), it was an industry call to which he has responded. I was at a series of meetings 3 years ago looking at why industry is importing talent from outside of the UK and the ability to code came up a lot. Not for the coding itself but as a springboard for young people to pick up wider ICT skills. They won't all be interested, just the same with any other subject, but it was felt that they needed the exposure to it. Linked with offering some schools free Raspberry Pis the idea is that schools will teach more than wordprocessing as ICT.

"We don't promote it, but I'm always on the look out for talent of any sort Great idea though, on the principle you don't know until you try it should help getting people interested in the field. Although it is a little geeky, but chicks dig geek chic " Sign up and show your support. Go along to a local school and get them enthused.

"Sign up and show your support. Go along to a local school and get them enthused. " I ought to hadn't I. Never know where gems of talent seed from. Personally, from what remember Comp Sci or Software was always a fall back. Even for me...no jobs in Microprocessor design after uni for me

Yeah I fully understand the reasons for it, and agree that children should be exposed to a broad range of topics in ICT. It's the teaching it to 7 year olds I find bizarre!
