I love it when they flash other vehicles in on the motorway. Or flash to say thank you.

I'm a total sucker for politeness on motorways. Well any road really.

Hmmm, you're all human, right? Eat, sleep and shit like the rest of us?

Same as most humans, some are ok and some I don't/wouldn't get on with.

It's not like truckers are a group that are all the same, where if you love/hate one then you'll feel the same way about the rest.

It strikes me as an odd question.

im a trucker.

as has been said, if you touch, its been on a wagon at some point, so bear it in mind when you are giving truckers shit.

that said, however, no, i dont like truckers.

i have never worked in an industry thats full of the most self obsessed, selfish, unhelpful individuals i have ever come across.

very very few seem to have time or interest in anyone other than themselves, and its ruining the industry.

vast majority i have come into contact with have been wankers, which is why, when im getting tipped, i go and hide in my truck.

will help anyone i see struggling, or offer advice where i can, but its a shame others arent so forthcoming, whether in a yard or out on the road.

would rather just watch and laugh than help.

and the ones that wear green are amongst the worst!

no offence to the OP or any other drivers on here as i possibly havent bumped into you

A diffocult question. On a personal basis we have not met many and cant say they are diffetent to anyone else. As drivers they are appalling. Always state they are 'professional' drivers as this automatically makes them good, which they rarely are. It also gives them super human powers that allows them to use mobiles, lap tops, eat a full 3 course meal, and prepare it, sleep, etc etc WHILST DRIVING.

Bane of my life!

Nah not all truckers you get some good lads and you get some bad ones (and lasses of course)

Im a shovel/excavtor driver and on a good day I get through 40-50 trucks.

You get some fantastic drivers who understand that they aren't the only truck in your world that day and have other jobs going on. Who also understand the meaning of theres a que and a bit of wait. There's drivers who can get it on a five bob bit, who understand its your break time will even bring you something in from the scran van.

Then there's the arseholes who can only reverse it onto a bay refuse to take advice, dont like waiting and insist on being loaded ten minutes ago. And if I hear 'tacho break' after sitting in the que for 10 mins I know exactly where the tacho will get put.

The majority are fine but as my uncle always says 'never upset the guy loading you'

funny that, because while sat in my cab tonight, i witnessed a guy in a jag with a tablet propped up on his centre console, watching a video

a young fella in a focus with his phone on his lap, browsing facebook

and an asian gentleman who joined the motorway in front of me, then inexplicably slammed his brakes on, causing me to do the same.

many more dodgy car drivers out there than truck drivers, just by sheer number alone.

Fact the average truck driver drives about 400 miles a day, that means they drive the same distance as the average car driver covers in a year every month (those trunking cover a lot more distance). Then they do their private milage in their cars...

The simple fact is if all car drivers were as competent behind the wheel as lorry (or bus) drivers the roads would be a much safer place.

I am NOT a truck or bus driver!

An excellent attitude, I'm the same, I hold an LGV licence, am a motorcyclist and a pedal cyclist so I simply assume every other road user is going to do me harm and give respect, thought and space to every driver. Keeps me out of harms way and stress free.

It's my humble opinion that a lot of drivers rage is self caused, driving to close, too fast and getting cut up because of it, not paying attention beyond their own personal little bubbles etc. Note I say a lot of drivers not ALL. There are lots if kind and thoughtful drivers and there are lots of morons who shouldn't hold a licence.

first shift i ever did in a truck was for dreams, delivering to london.

double manning.

being new i was so cautious and courtious, and the other driver said 'you will never get anywhere like that' and he was right.

no one letting you out, you had to push your way out

when sat in traffic, there was always someone to pull in front of you, no matter how small a gap there was

mopeds weaving their way in and out of traffic at warp speed.

it terrified me, and i havent driven in central london since.

and never will i

Neither love nor hate them. Like most other motorists there are good and bad. However, since I drive a tiny car I do tend to drive in the outside lane to avoid them as I've had many simply pull out into me in the other lanes.

I hear the 'I'm a professional driver' arguement but tbh everyone tends to think they are a good driver.

We all make errors. We forget to cancel our indicators, we nearly miss the odd junction, don't leave enough room for others sometimes.

Tiredness after driving on monotonous roads like motorways probably doesn't improve things.

Not sure if the origional post was supposed to mean 'do you like truckers' on the road or in bed?

As has been said, as in every area of life there are good ones, not so good ones, and downright awful ones.

My penny's worth would be that as a group, lorry drivers have changed. The old 'knights of the road' have all but gone, and with the huge increase in the need to move goods around the country there has been an equally huge need for drivers. Sadly though, for many of them driving is just a job; many were doing something totally different 6 months ago, and if in a couple of years time they decide it's no longer for them, then they'll be off doing something else.

Whereas in days gone by, lorry driving was something guys wanted to do, very often because it was what their father had done. Many young boys would have been introduced to it by going out in the cab with their Dads, at weekends and during school holidays.

Of course, the overall situation of road transport is exacerbated by the 'big boys', particularly the supermarkets who operate huge stores, work on small cost/profit margins but still manage to make huge profits. But they operate with relatively small storage, hence their need for lorries arriving every 5 minutes with another load of goods for the shelves.

Here endeth the rant!!

some good points, however, truck driving cant be jsut a job due to the long hours and the solitary nature of it, no one in their right mind would do it as 'just a job'.

i have earned more per hour, pressing a button on a machine in a factory than i do driving.

i enjoy driving.

its a great way of seeing the country and getting paid for it.

i enjoy being alone and getting on with things.

if you dont like all of these things, then it really isnt for anyone to do.

I used to run one of the UK's largest Truckstops until 2006 when it closed down due to area regneration.

Truckers were our life-blood and by & large they were a great bunch. As in all groups in society, there were the idiots who spoilt it for the rest, but it isn't a perfect world.

But put very bluntly, if it wasn't for trucks, nothing would get to the shops, homes and so on.

I'm a pedestrian, not a driver or a cyclist, my oh is a cyclist and a driver, good at both. Going off track a little, some of you may know I'm a lollipop lady and the majority of car drivers, truckers, the odd bus do give me respect and allow me to do my job safely. But there are the odd few who are complete idiots, parents included and cyclists who do silly things. Parents with mugs of tea/coffee in hand, or mobile phone while driving their kids to school. I still like to think of myself as a considerate and conscientious driver...

I'm aware of the importance of keeping traffic flowing for the benefit of those 5 miles / mins behind me and don't ever consider my journey to be any more or less important than anyone else's...

People only remember the bad that they see and don't even realise that we're assimilating thousands of images a second, judging speed and distance of every other vehicle we see around us and plotting predicted courses in our heads...

Whenever you see trucks involved in accidents its rarely (90%!!) of the time the truckers fault...

Its more commonly the BMW that just cut across 3 lanes to slam its brakes on in front of my 44tonne truck to take the slip road at the last second rather than wait behind me for half a breath til the roads clear...

Yes, there ARE bad drivers, and don't forget inexperienced ones too but by and large many of us still take pride in our profession!

very very well said.

i remember getting berated by the guy who was teaching me when i said it wasnt all that difficult.

he said 'if it was that easy, every cnut would be doing it!'
