How compassionate are you?

Someone has just asked me this and I am not really sure how to answer, I think it can vary, depending on how I am feeling myself. What about you?

Depends on the situation I think. My best friend will tell you I'm a cold hearted of hard faced cow but I can be sensitive

Does it depend on your mood, or who the person is?

I think it depends on mood a bit. For me, it doesn't depend on the person. Even if it's someone I don't like, if I thought they were getting a raw deal I still stick up for them.

In some situations I doubt you would find anyone more so... if they are just a needy cunt I may be a little less generous with my compassion.

I am to an extent, if people take control of whatever is upsetting them: I will support 100% with kindness and compassion.

if they continue to be a 'victim' of themselves, much lesser so.

I can feel compassion towards almost anyone, how that's expressed depends entirely on the situation and the person.

Pretty much me...I run out of compassion with some people, especially when they repeatedly put themselves in situations which require compassion!

Do also think it depends on how well I know the person/people too...think if we were all affected by everything that happened to extended friends and family we'd struggle to get on with every day life, sometimes you have to distance yourself.

It's what gets me in trouble, I try and react or give advice that I hope will actually help the person and that isn't always what everyone thinks should be done.

Extremely compassionate in most situations, although it does tend to run thin on the ground, when I'm compassionate with the same person time and time again, and their not listening... And keep making the same mistake over and over.....

Yes I compassionate to real suffering but I detest those black and white RSPCA type adverts which try and guilt-trip you into setting up a direct debit.

As said before, depends on who, why and mood.

I agree with adverts too! One that really annoyed me yesterday (angry compassion) was an advert on getting closer to curing cancer.... If we keep paying!!

i always try and help, who ever it is, hell even people i do not normally get along with.

I cannot send cash to every charity or sometimes i cannot help, and i feel guilty about not being able too.

Have been taken for a mug a few times though.

still will not change, its my nature to be generous, even if it is only time and an ear to talk to.

I don't tend to suffer fools gladly if something has been bought on themselves.

But if a friend needs me, I'm there wholehearted.

With my friends they call me an agony aunt.

A good listener of others problems, but struggle revealing my own if I have them.

I think confusing compassion with agreeing with a person is what stops people feeling compassion or makes them think they shouldn't show it.

I feel compassion for some of the situations people post about on these forums even though they are not showing it themselves because I can see that they are on a path that will hurt them and people close to them. However my reaction to them is often perceived as less than compassionate because I don't appear sympathetic to or agree with their cause.

What is compassion? How should it be demonstrated?

It depends if its someone who deserves compassion or if its a needy asshole the second gets very little from me.

I'm the same and can vary depending on mood. Even if I am feeling compassionate though I don't really communicate it as well as I'd like to so either way it makes me seem like I'm not.

I can go out of my way for a random. I will go out of my way to do something for someone I care for no matter how big or small that is. Catch me on a bad day and I can be horrible like the rest of them. That is a really rarity though

I appreciated the point you made and agree that compassion does sometimes require you to look past what's in front of you and possibly see the reasons behind the neediness.
