Do you find money brings you happiness? Or is it a burden that's changed you adversely?

Money can't buy you happiness but if you are loaded then at least you can be miserable in luxuriant style.

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

Money itself is a pain in the arse, trying to balance my outgoings and making sure they're not more than my incomings. However money buys me things and experiences that bring me happiness.

Money brings comfort and security but not necessarily happiness.

Lack of money often causes stress, higher living costs (those with money always get better financial deals etc) and a lack of respect from organisations and companies, (especially if any benefits are claimed). Often those with little money are unable to find decent housing and have to endure unscrupulous landlords who refuse to make repairs.

I'd go for the former, given the choice. Having been in both situations, life is certainly easier when one has money.

It doesn't bring happiness in itself but it gives a lot more options and chances to find happiness.

I'd love to not have to worry about where my next pair of heels is going to come from.

Sigh.....

Sadly life is just not like that and it's a constant torment.

The world seems to be full of lots very miserable people dying of poverty.

You do seem to see a lot rich people dying from excess...

Think I would rather die from too much money than too little...

You'll always be better off if you don't have to worry about money but it is not guaranteed you'll be happy.

I know plenty of very rich and very miserable people. I think is is particularly true for the women. Maybe money is more likely to bring happiness to men... Not sure...

This seems to be about right. It eases a lot of day to day worries that people who are skint have to worry about.

These observations feel about right. Having had poverty and money (though never true wealth) I would say that Lola and I have been very happy in both states, but the one where money wasn't an issue is more attractive, for obvious reasons.

But. Has anyone here had money change them for the better? To make a miserable life bearable at the very least?

Money has never been synonymous with happiness, it can help relieve financial worries and constraints, but you only have to look at certain "celebrities" to see it certainly isn't the be all and end all.

Health isnt to bad All I need is money to do more things and live healthier. 0ne off 100k would get me a fresh home and car start. Then I have more time to improve income and expenditure habits. £250k would set me for life

Interesting that you can quantify it with relatively small amounts. So many I think would place millions on happiness.

Me, at the moment, with a business in its first year fighting to make it like any other would be happy for £5k!

I was happier when I had money. Having no money and scraping by makes life more stressful and it can feel miserable and unbearable at times.

That said, the prolonged time I've now been without much money has given me new perspectives and understanding of things I didn't consider before. It's made me a nicer person and has definitely changed me, as an individual, for the better.

We're happy and we don't have much, we just make the best if what we have. There's little mileage in worrying too much about something you don't or probably won't ever have.

When I had money, for example, I was able to go horse riding which I loved and found very relaxing. I had a gorgeous car which I enjoyed. I could go out if I wanted, travelling the length of the country, or flying abroad to see friends or attend events if I wanted to. I could afford my love of latex and various other hobbies and interests. I lived in a nice house with comfortable surroundings.

Those things made me happy. I can't do them now, and I miss them. I've not found anything with which to replace them that gives me the same degree of enjoyment.

Minus the latex, completely identify with this!

However I live in hope and play the lottery.

We don't have a huge amount of money but we both work full time and can pay the bills without worrying. Money gives people options and choices. I'd rather have money than not.

In our capitalist world money gives you options and freedom. It's what you choose to do with that freedom that determines how happy you will be.

Money gives you options that not having money may not, it does not give you happiness. What you choose to do with that optionality determines your happiness. But ask 1000 poor people would they rather have more money and I suspect 999 of them would probably say yes.

It's strange as you can't be happy when poor to the point you can't socialise properly, pay house bills, etc. Yet if I was offered an evening in with a loved one that doesn't cost money or to be rich so I don't have to worry about work, I'd choose love every time as money doesn't buy love and love makes anyone happy. Secondly money doesn't make you get true friends. So you can has all the money in the world and still feel lonely

Having money would definitely remove a big chunk of worry from my life and allow me to free up some of my time so that I'm not working all the damn time, allowing me to spend more time with my family and friends, so yes. Money would make me happier.

Yes and no. I've always been happy. I'm still happy.

I'm happier still that all i have is a result of all my work and effort.

I often find, the happier people are those who don't have a lot (relative to some) but are more than content with what they have and don't covet what others have.

Money brings more happiness than misery and poverty brings more misery than happiness but money guarantees you nothing but a big house and a fancy car if you have a lot of it and can drive. Sounds good to me.
