royals visit flood areas

Read on news prince charles is to visit some areas affected by floods and i wonder if this is of any benefit to those affected as all that will happen is him saying sorry to hear you are suffering but i must dash as mummy making tea back at the palace

Joking aside and same applies with politicians too whats the point its clear how much help is needed so instead of spending money flying them around and on security why not do something practical to help via making the peoples lives better by sorting out the problems in practical ways not just bluster.

It's about showing support and solidarity. I agree it's of little use in real terms but when disaster strikes it can be comforting to know that those at the top are aware of your plight and , on the face of it, care enough to show their face.

I agree. I don't understand why any 'celebs' visit disaster areas. Seems bloody insensitive really.

I live in an area that's been badly affected by flooding in the past. This time it's not been as bad due to a lot of flood defence works.

I guess the positive from someone like Prince Charles visiting is that it makes it a top news story again . Thus highlighting to the rest of the country how bad it is. And I especially think the older generation will appreciate his visit.

However on the counter side the emergency services should really be the ones in the spotlight ! They do a fantastic job and so often go above & beyond the call of duty.

Agreed. In an ideal world the purpose of a political or royal visit should be a field trip to see the problem and action a solution, instead, it's nothing more than a PR trip. Flood defense is shocking in this country, few spend the money required to help reduce the problem and insurance companies don't want to payout.

Good point about the celebrity being there making it newsworthy and therefore getting it into the news. Hadn't really thought of that.

I'd go with MrWho's comment. It's to show their subjects that they are aware of their plight and want to see how they have been affected

No one has a magic wand so to expect them to fix things is a little unrealistic really but it gives people a chance to get their voices heard like that old lady who gave the primeminister what for

And I'm sure he'd rather stay at home today. I'm sure his visit will be appreciated by some and again raise awareness to others. Let's watch the news later and see how it went ...

Aberystwyrh prom was severely damaged a few weeks ago with the estimate for repair in excess of £1.5 million. Two Ministers visited the site, the second one to announce funding of just over half a million to help with those repairs. The people of Ceredigion were very appreciative of those visits and I didn't hear anyone say they thought it was a waste or a gesture to ease their conscience!! But what do I know, Im only a local who actually lives here

How come when something happens abroad . A mud slide or floods . We are soon sending millions and millions yet when something happens here the best we can hope for is a token gesture and a visit by prince fuckin Charles

If the royals and the politicians really gave a shit there would be millions more pumped in

I'm sure insurance companies will foot a majority of the bill, it's what they're there for.

As for visits by royals and/or celebrities, liken it to people visiting you in hospital after major surgery or an accident. They can't physically help but it's comforting to know they're awareof your struggle, even if all they bring are some manky grapes and some flowers from a petrol station.

I was going to write something supporting Chuck's visit.... but on second thoughts fuck 'em.

I'm sick of seeing the moaning fuckers from the Somerset Levels on telly demanding money be spent. You fucking chose to live below sea level in an area which has historically flooded. You didn't stop Farmer Joe clearing the trees on the hills, oh no, you just fucking moan about river dredging ... without a fucking care of who it effects down stream............ so fuck 'em!

I can remember seeing footage of his mum's uncle, the Duke of Windsor, or Prince of Wales as he was then, visiting depressed mining areas in Wales during the depression. He was immaculately dressed. It didn't half look strange against the backdrop of communities in dire straits.
