I have an American pen friend from when we were 11 at school, we are really close. She is someone very special in my life, and Ive got to say I love the country and many of the people. I dislike some of their politics and political people, but they are not the average guy. Awesome natural wonders too. South America is fabulous, and enjoyed my Canadian travels too. Wish we had the same amount of land space over here!

I've been across to New York, Connecticut and parts of Texas and I know it's not much to base a whole view on but I overall I don't like it. However, there are places that I want to visit.

I have family there and enjoy visiting the country but I really would like to get out west and go to the Rockies on the Canadian side.

My son lives in America, Atlanta Georgia, a fantastic city, great things to experience. I have however seen signs of awful racism shared by both black and white individuals, this shouldn't have come as a surprise given the history of the South, such a shame but it seems to be more rife than ever!

My ex is Mexican and I could not believe how racist they are towards Mexicans. I suppose with the issues with immigration and Mexicans coming over the boarder however I was shocked at how racist people really were....

I love the States, if you venture away from the usual tourist traps it is actually one of the best countries to visit. I have been very fortunate to have visited 17 states from Idaho and Wyoming to Louisiana and Kentucky. Anyone ever have the chance to go it's a must!

Brigadoon

I've never been there so can only speak for the ones I've met that were here on holidays. 95% were the most stupid, but polite, people i have ever met. One family that stood out from the rest though were an American servceman and his family, they were reunited by castle webcam when he was in Afghanistan and his wife and daughters were here on holiday and ended up getting a free holiday here. They were truly a lovely family in every way.

South East Asia is great, Indonesia is good too. Great diving there, which is probably why I don't fancy the US. I want to do Malaysia and Myanmar(Burma) and seeing as Thailand is in between it would be rude not to go back.

Yes, I've been to Thailand many times - love the islands of the South - Koh Phangan in particular - & the vibe that you get from the people - but I've always avoided Burma because it's always been made far too difficult to travel through (no land borders, flights, visas etc) but it looks like it's now changing for the good. I'd love to spend a few months there!!!

I'd be going for the diving, they have started running livaboards from Thailand up into Burmese waters, probably wouldn't actually step ashore in Burma, although if it was easier to go to Burma and do dayboat dives I'd do that.Because of the limitations there have been on diving the reefs would be as near to pristine as you're going to get. Would like to go to the North East of Thailand for some white water rafting. Was in Phucket when I went before. Indonesia was ideal as my sister lived there, but she's in Hong Kong now, okay for a few days but wouldn't stay there long.

Sounds brilliant - the Andaman sea has such an awesome colour/clarety. Been to koh phi phi & Phucket but never for that kind of diving!

I've done a little snorkeling in Bali & NZ but regrettably, I've never really taken it up. It must be awesome!!

Would love to dive with Whale sharks, - that looks spectacular; - have you ever?

Only reef sharks, it's hit and miss with the palegic fish, off of phucket there was two sets of divers went different ways and the other group came across manta rays, lucky buggers. One of the reasons for wanting to go to Malaysia is to dive at Sipadan island where you are apparently more or less gaurenteed to see big palegics every time. Galapagos would be good too...

NZ as well now I'm envious... Australia is tempting to. Been to Japan when working but managed to get just over two weeks to look around.

It's off the east coast about the same latitude as Brunei. If you enjoyed snorkeling you're going to enjoy diving, I always snorkel between dives as there is usually 3-4 hours between dives on day boats.

My late father was born in the United States, so I've always had a great fascination for the country and the people.

I've visited several times, and love it there. Yes, if we're talking about the people, there are good and bad, just like anywhere else. I've no patience for people using the term "Americans" as shorthand to dismiss millions of people in one fell swoop, in the same way that I don't tolerate any prejudice of any generalisation of folk, whatever the category.

Whilst still on the subject of "America", in reference to the 50 United States of America, I also don't understand anyone's collective disinterest for visiting, when they declare a lack of appeal. To think that Alaska to Hawaii, and all the mainland states, as one unappealing place to visit, seems to me as ignorant as regarding Europe or Africa as "samey".

Yes, I recognise Americanisms, and social traits. But I prefer to focus on the positives. I very much admire the "can-do" attitude to life, that anything is possible, by anyone, regardless of background.

Other than Canada, the USA, and Trinidad and Tobago, I've yet to visit the rest of the vast continent. Of course it gets my vote, just like anywhere else on the planet.

Tried to pm you in fear of thread-hijacking rules being applied, but to no avail - that's uncanny - I was talking to a friend about diving off Sabah just the other day, - looks fantastic!!

You mentioned ww rafting in northern Thailand, well, it's slightly out of the region, but I can fully recommend the Sun Kosi river in eastern Nepal - it's absolutely brilliant & proper expedition stuff - 8 rivernn the river with no roads within a day's walk, so you've all your gear strapped on. Only a short flight from Kathmandu (party town) to Bangkok/Yangon, - check it out!

The us is ok, it's the laws that are messed up. I've been across the us, Canada, Alaska, Mexico and parts of south America. Some places are better than others but i guess that's every where you go.
