I heard some pretty shocking stuff a few years ago how heroin is so rife in Hollywood with lots of actors you wouldn't have thought would be associated with it.

But then again I also heard that men fold and women scrunch so I think I'll just stop listening.

If the usual quality is say 20% pure and suddenly a batch of 80% pure comes along people die, because they bang up their usual amount it is effectively 4 times as much it leads to an overdose, which leads to drowning in their own vomit...

My bad, it was New York authorities, not the NYPD. I skimmed the article.

But anyways:

'For the past three weeks, authorities have been tracking batches of deadly fentanyl-laced heroin that has been moving east from Pittsburgh.

Twenty-two people in western Pennsylvania died of overdoses in the past week. Authorities believe that most of the deaths were related to heroin laced with fentanyl, a powerful narcotic typically prescribed to terminal cancer patients as means of pain management.

It is 100 times more powerful than morphine, and in combination with heroin can shut down the respiratory system of users.

The laced heroin went by the street names “Theraflu” and “Bud Ice” in Pennsylvania, but as it made its way to Long Island it was re-branded as “24K.”

It has already been linked to five Long Island overdoses.

The Nassau County medical examiner’s chief toxicologist told Newsday that “this is all happening very rapidly.” The county issued a “contaminated heroin alert” on Thursday to prevent more overdoses.

Last month, 22 people in Rhode Island died in thirteen days. Authorities determined the cause of death in nineteen of them to have been the fentanyl-laced heroin'

Sounds like nasty shit

Prohibition doesn't and never will work but how you could legalise hard drugs like heroin I don't know, countries that do will give it to registered addicts only, so even then the black market exists for the people who aren't already addicts.

I'm sure a country has legalised all drugs and although there was a spike (no pun intended) in people using smack, the rate dropped after a while."

Happens with cannabis as well, when the legalise it usage drops.

At the end of the day alcohol causes more deaths and costs the NHS more than all the rest put together, but is sociably acceptable. Probably could say the same about cigarettes as well.

"Bad batch of heroin.

It's usually the good batch that catches them out...

It was contaminated. NYPD put a warning out on Thursday.

wait a minute...

Only contaminated heroin is lethal?...

So there is a safe version?...

What did NYPD say?...

.."warning contaminated heroin...be careful who you buy from reputable drug dealers only"....

My bad, it was New York authorities, not the NYPD. I skimmed the article.

But anyways:

Ah but alcohol and tobacco are perfectly taxable drugs.

And don't forget the sponsorship deals.

"alcohol is by far the worst drug.and makes me laugh when i hear drinkers taking the high ground.. x x X "

Apparently effects the same part of the central nervous system as heroin.

Wealthy addicts like this actor go unnoticed as he wouldn't have been robbing people to feed his habit, he wouldn't have needed to use dirty needles so he wouldn't have picked up hepatitis or aids etc.

The fact of the matter is that prohibition causes as many if not more problems than the substances themselves. Putting the control into the hands of criminals who are adulterating otherwise relatively safe substances to increase their profit margins. Kids can buy legal highs and are acting like guinea pigs for untested substances, until they ban them.

More education for teenagers on the dangers of misuse rather than the likes of 'just say no' wild be a step in the right direction. A certain percentage are going to try them no matter what so we may as well teach them to be safer than to try and tell them it's naughty don't do it.

Was trying to think of that bizarre film where he oversees and lives in a 1:1 scale recreation of New York and then you mentioned it. Synecdoche, NY. A strange but utterly brilliant film (I liked his stalker in the film). Check it out.

He looked older than 46, shame

Just like the 8748 people that died from alcohol abuse in 2011 and the 33000 odd people where alcohol was implicated in their deaths, complete and utter wasters the lot of them. In the same period 2200 odd deaths by drug abuse.

Any substance that is abused will have negative effects.

That's the caring attitude I've come to expect from people on this site. By that logic anyone who dies of bowel cancer is a selfish eater of red meat who was asking for it. What else? Someone steps out of their front door and gets hit by a bus - serves them right for not staying indoors.

I hope you make all the right choices in life.

the point of the post wasnt to compare the two but to prompt you to think about your judgemental attitude towards one lifestyle factor which can result in illness and/or death, ask yourself whether you apply this to all lifestyle factors which can result in illness and/or death

Well both could be seen as self inflicted, so why not. This man was wealthy so he wasn't out robbing people to fund his habit. He chose to do something which brought his life to a premature end, as do some people who eat certain foods excessively, or drink too much alcohol. The path is different but the destination is the same.
