It's easy to get sucked into believing that you need to have the latest tech to replace what you have. But it is 1mm thinner... £500 phones obsolete in 18 months, my parents had two phones in 20 years...

Technology is moving so fast that only very few people, generally those at the cutting edge, in other words the people who are actually doing the development work, understand it. This is worrying, as the boffins developing the technology only generally have to concentrate on their own part of things, and the interaction is then with other technology also developed in isolation then merged. The result tends to be something great whilst it works properly, but almost unrepairable when it goes wrong. Not too worrying when it's something like a microwave oven or a telly, but its a different ball game when you think about aircraft or these super high-speed trains...are the people who fix them really fully understanding of their complexities...?

God I must be bored if I've just written all that on a sex site...any nice ladies out there fancy a shag...?...lol. R. XX

It's called Moores law. The number of transistors on a chip doubles every 18 months or so. It works with size too, the size halves every two years or so. We are approaching a limit with size and until we can cheaply and reliably produce materials on the nano scale things will start to level off in the next 5 to ten years.

My concern with electronics is that techno-geeks design things that are interesting to them and not comprehensible to users. My phone and GPS satnav allow me to do things that I don't want to do even if I understood all of the features.

Apple use peer pressure for sales... new models constantly.

Im tired of all these apps, gadgets.

Groups of teens using bb messenger sitting next to each other. Couples out at night, both on phones. Its killing social interaction.

And mobiles and texts are invasive... Coming into your space.

I like the way we get so attached to our technology, that when it goes wrong people are lost without.

As for apple I refuse to own an Iphone due to them releasing a new one every 6 months.

Tech companies push an overkill of product features at us, which convinces many that a product with more features than we think we need must be both better and will last us longer. So a lot of the change in technology is just about getting more money from us. I generally prefer simpler stuff, and am careful with my money. I dont btw into peer pressure to 'have' to have any technology.

That seems like a bit of a daft reason not to have one. Do you not have an oven, fridge, washing machine, Hoover, actually any electrical products. As manufactures probably bring a new model out of all these every year as we'll.

All you have to do is figure out what you want to achieve and get which tools you require to achieve that.

If you decide that you must always have the latest abilities you will find that you only have them for the sake of owning them. Not to actually use them. Fashion is for fools, you are not defined by what you own.

Yes it does but no-one is forcing anyone to buy the latest technology, far too much materialism and must have these days. I have an Iphone only because the flat screen is more comfortable for my RSI and a computer, don't see the point in having an Ipad and a laptop as well. And I for one won't be upgrading my Iphone when its time either, perfectly happy with the one I have

I don't get why people - such as my sister, feel the need to upgrade their phones every year, um quite tech savvy and I used a n HTC desire for years was only just before Xmas I upgraded cause it did get too old, yet my sister only uses hers for whatsapp Facebook and text, she never uses the phone to its full potential and I mist people don't, they just feel they have to upgrade

My biggest gripe with technology is that its finding its way into things that we depend on to stay alive - cars for example.

It used to be that you bought a car and it would last 10 to 15 years happily. Now the expected lifecycle of a car is just 7 years.

A friend of mine has a brand new Citroen. It broke down after just 3 months. It was taken to the garage and was told that it needed an "update".

It spent 10 minutes on a computer and worked perfectly after that. There was nothing mechanically wrong with it.

And it cost him £300 quid.

Surely if it was only 3 months old it would still be under warranty?

Cars are more reliable now than they've ever been. I had cars forty years ago, and they were rubbish.

Years ago i could edit VHS tapes & it was easy, now DVD is going out so i'm editing mainly in MPEG4 HD & MKV HD as these are the most popular formats.

I am working on CBZ digital mags as this is going to be popular with Linux,Android,Apple & Windows.

1080p is now being replaced with 4K which will be replaced within 5 years by 10K so it never ends.

I seem to spend half my life now reading new books on changing formats, technology stayed still for 20 years then went crazy lol!

The pace of technology is one of great importance to countries now China, USA, UK to name but a few. We as citizens over the last 20 or so years have slowly been convinced that this is a must have, to make your life better and much more productive equalling you being a better person. Sad to say all it has done is quite the opposite. You see it everyday with phones, game stations even your television is now 'SMART', but when you actually take a few minutes out of your day and look around you what really is it that we have achieved?. In my humble opinion not a lot. If anything we have made things worse. life is now a roller coaster of technology, even our fridges are starting to spy on us and send spam emails. Instead of going and speaking with our friends who live locally we text in our new language of text speech. We even send them our emotions via a wee face. Sadly gone are the days where people actually spoke, conversed took time out. It's only going to get worse give it 10 years and see where we are. Shit we will probably all have an artificial intelligent swinger that we can call on whenever we are horny to come pleasure us. Well at least is single guys will have something to really moan about then lol.

Better to buy an old vehicle as mine is 1995 and lasted way longer than new vehicles. Don't see the point in brand new, far too much technology in them which means more to break down/go wrong. A work colleague had an Audi, back window wouldn't wind down, wiring loom £700. My old proton I just sold, window also the same, £50

in work all I see is all the latest phones every up date that is brought out, people who don't have the latest one get ripped about it. I also don't like the I phone due to it being sort of elitist as in you can only interact with other iphones as in Bluetooth.

Personally I like my old Samsung Galaxy ACE.

i got my first PC at 21 when i was working for Siemens (they had a tie in with fujitsu and we got a state of the art pc and had our wages stopped)

first phone at 18, which was lcd readout.

last mobile i bought was around 5 years ago.

bought myself a laptop about 3 years ago.

both are still working fine so wont be replaced any time soon.

dont understand apps, widgets or any of this facetime or whatever, not interested.

while im 5 years behind on tech, im 5 years outside the radar, and more than happy

At the end of the 1990s I was one of the most up-to-date people on the planet...the latest gadgets, tv, phone, computer, etc, and was working in a company developing some pretty high-tech products for industry. Something went BANG, and the next thing I know, all my stuff was outdated, and even the company I was working for saw its products sidelined by new technology platforms...it happened so fast, and since then the pace of technological advancement has just accelerated out of sight. Now nobody can fix anything without the aid of computers it seems...the days of fix-it-yourself are over for most things. Sad, but true

Still, at least technology hasn't got in the way of a damned good shag...yet...lol. R.

As do Samsung, BB, Nokia and all other phone companies. Don't just tar Apple with that brush, all tech companies do it.

It's supply & demand, if consumers didn't want new tech, that's smaller, faster, more powerful there would be no benefit to new modals so often.

I'm happy with my iPhone, I've had the same one for 18 months and not looking to change it, with the OS upgrades, there really is no issue or need to upgrade it.

Technology is not moving fast enough, All I have seen in the last few years have been minor tweaks and style changes. Still using an iPhone 3Gs as the 4 and 5 have not added anything that I need or want, my PC is 5 years old and is running an i7 processor, with a Solid State Drive that is delivering the same throughput speed as current options. and cars / motorcycles have not improved much in a decade or more.

It certainly is a fast moving digital world. The scariest thing, or the most exciting thing, depending on your point of view, is how we are increasingly tracked and profiled by Google, Facebook, Amazon and other online services. And let's not forget our very own security services who, in the name of national security, want to know everything we do do and say. I think privacy, or the lack of it, will become the number one digital issue for many of us.

Manufacturers would rather you buy the unrepairable non upgradeable gadget than the upgradable tech and I think maybe you like many have fallen into their trap.

What a fabulous thread! I was just going to start one on advertising but didn't know where to put it.

I have just bought a new laptop last week - a nice one at that, and installed mozilla add blocker plus on it.

I did some poking around of the features to add blocker, and it can opt you out of all advertising and any tracking reports!

It's only been on a day, and I cannot begin to tell you how clean my browsing experience is. It is literally the page I want, without ANY advertisements! No washing machines, click me now games, thai cams, nivea moisturisers or auto play videos that if you accidentally swirl your mouse pointer over, consume your entire page.

I didn't realise exactly how much advertising we are actually bombarded with in general surfing! It is within our every click!

I was in a shop the other day (Friday evening) where their line had been cut...

No card readers, no contactless internet banking payments...cash only...

It was quite funny to see the techno heard milling around moving from till to till in the hope that the techno magic might suddenly work...

For some things tech is not the answer. LoL

It makes you laugh at he size of computers now compared to those in the early eighties, when i was a poster designer for the Co Op many yonks ago their computer bank was at the bottom of their building in Stratford.

The room was full of machines that even if you all put them together wouldn't have been more than 1gig, the big floppy disc's could easily be damaged & at the time the people would go over the pub boasting they had one of the best computers systems of the day lol!.
