"if he didn't do the job right ask him to come and look at it again" Doesn't mean it's going to not cost though, plumbers tend to charge by the hour, unless it is a problem with something he has done you may have to pay more. If he only changed the motor it's a lot quicker than changing the valve so he's not going to come back and change the rest of the valve for no cost. He may have to adjust his bill to take into consideration what he has already done though. Always a good idea to thoroughly test the system before you leave a job. He was obviously sure he'd cracked it. Did he not tell you what he had changed? Did he give you a receipt? Decent 3 port valves cost at least 75 + vat, a cheap one 35 + vat, plus the time taken.

" Yes he said he'd changed something in the airing cupboard my bad for not listening properly!! I'm guessing that as he left I had heating and hot water which I didn't before so he reckoned he had cracked it and still thinks he has as the second guy who rang the first guy while here both say there's nothing wrong with it!! No receipt or anything as I'm with homeserve so it was just done through my policy!

"Could be the overheat stat on the boiler, that said it could also be all manner of things. You need to find a heating engineer not just a plumber. Although expensive I think that British Gas do a fixed price to solve the problem. (I run a plumbers merchant)" The system has been drained, I reckon it airlocked. The boiler is kettling. Boiler is cycling so probably just cutting out on high temp then starting up again. I think the op has a contract with homeserve who drained the system. A lot of overheat stats don't auto reset, where as the high temp cuts in or out at the set temp.
