Who of you out there are belivers or follwers of a religon and how do you reconcile this with your swinging lifestyle?

I myself was brought up catholic but am firmly in the darwin camp now! Lofe is short enough so enjoy while you can

What people believe is between them and whatever they believe in - it shouldn't make any difference!

I would say I was brought up as a Christian, I also however enjoy the swinging lifestyle - don't see it should have any effect.

I treat others as i'd expect to be treated - which hasn't done me any harm.

I'm a scientist so I don't buy the whole bible story of course, but I do think it offers lessons of tremendous value. And of course plenty of opportunity for the homophobes to cherry pick from.

I'm interested in my own spiritual evolution and of others. I'm into growth as a person without stepping on others' toes. This spiritualism has allowed me a sexual freedom.

But that happens with all species, some fish swim ,others have learnt to walk and swim....Some kangaroos hop along and some live in trees.... (just a cpl of examples)

So it follows that some apes evolved and some didnt

I believe we have paused our evolution because there is currently no ecological pressure for human survival. Instead there appears to be a financial pressure which I think will eventually become an environmental pressure and would restart our genetic evolution.

Meh, religion another method of trying to control the masses by the few. Whilst it preaches some good it also preaches a load of nasty shite. Every religion has extremists of some form. I've probably been in less than 10 churches in my lifetime if you count weddings and being dragged around Notre Dame as a child. Never to worship.

Religion is a proven method of control, but it can also be a major force for good. It's proven that people with faith are far more resilient to depression and anxiety. In an increasingly disconnected society where people are trained to care more about what handheld device they're using to "connect" to an intangible online "community" or to follow solitary pursuits, religion is losing out.

The flipside of this is that extremism is filling the gaps left by a dehumanising technological culture.

We evolved from primates from which came the great apes (we are one of them) and monkeys. We can assume evolution is not complete but it is impossible to really predict the future of what we could become. Evolution tends to be measured in millenia so it's unlikely we will see the changes. We don't live long enough.

I like Terence McKenna's theory that the primates started eating psychoactive plants and mushrooms and that triggered the next stage in intellectual evolution. Also a great excuse to keep getting stoned.

Religion was failing in this country long before we had smartphones or the internet...

It would be interesting to find out the average age of congregations in this country, every time I've noticed people arriving at Christian churches they seem to be mainly made up of quite elderly people. Whilst I've never seen any arrivals at a mosque, the impression I get is that they have a greater age range attending.

Religion was failing in this country long before we had smartphones or the internet...

I didn't cite smartphones and the Internet as the beginning of the end for religion. Just mentioned them as standard tools of our age and something that might foster an alternative sense of community, and of course neither of them are a bad thing, that would be a ridiculous thing to say. Capitalism is a far greater mode of control than religion. Get people wanting to own the new device and you can get them to do anything.

12 years of Catholic school put me off of all forms of Christianity and most organized religion. I am interested in Buddhist meditation and have read several books about Buddhism however I don't conform to stereotypes about Buddhists. It seems psychological, practical, and flexible.
