So 2014 - a new year full of optimism and good cheer .... Hmmmm

Had no work since Xmas with 3 unsuccessful quotes (that time of year maybe!!)

Computer on its way out, so took the plunge to get a new one and opted for a Mini Mac .... all things going well, transferring files from my ultra safe external hard drive and "bang and bollocks" 20 years worth of family history (and recent business) deleted!!!!!

Fuck, fuck, fuck

Sorry for the rant

You can get data recovery software for your drive so don't dump it

I've got some recovery discs from a few years ago and windows is running a check disc now, so I will see how it looks then.....

Soooooo muck data though - I could cry !!! In fact I think I will. - sniff sniff

Why not just install the back-ups. You did take back-ups didn't you?

PC World - now how can I put this ... lol They would only use the recovery software I already have and to say that there are things on here that are not for the eyes of others ...... well, if anyone could understand that, it would be the people on here .. lol

The external hard drive was the ultimate back up! Still trying to work out the why.... I have run anti virus on the Mac and also the old PC...

To be honest, the data "should" all be recoverable, along with every other deleted file on the (1TB) disk.... So this is going to take a long time to rebuild!

Apple promote Cloud storage, I may look into that now ...

Is the hard drive spinning up at all?

Is it a WD 1tb HDD. I had a newish one that just dried, fried it's own onboard chip. Replacement chip about £70ish.

Rotten Apple eh. Shame you had no back up. I have often thought about buying an extra external hard drive to back up my extra external hard drive

I have a program called On Track, which I have used before about 7 years ago on a friend's PC, after thet deleted everything..

Checkdisk is still going....

So have both your main and backup copies of everything gone then? Backing up implies that you have a duplicate copy, merely storing it on an external drive instead of on the internal drive, is not a backup.

I've been in IT over 30 years and we have a saying - if something doesn't exist in at least 2 places, then it doesn't exist.

Its a Maxtor HDD and it seems to be working fine, i'll know more once I can get into it.....

It's starting to feel like some wobbly code somewhere and the disk has gone wibble...

YOu are quite correct, my statement was wrong. All my files were stored on an external hard drive away from any possible C: drive failure.... poo!!
