Sugar.

You need essential fatty acids for your joints and skin.

Too much sugar converts to day and is addictive.

Fat doesn't cause dental decay.

Which is worse?! Sugar and fat are both essential for the boddy's nutrition. Why should they be conceived as bad when they are good for you. The bad thing is the exagerated intake. Or unsufficient intake of either and any other nutritions our boddy needs. a complete balanced diet with a daily physical activity is the healthy way.

I take it when you say sugar you mean cane sugar. Sugar is not restricted to cane sugar. Most food we eat contains sugar(s). Vegetables, fruits, pasta and bread and even meat contain sugars. Liver is rich in sugars as well. Sugars in plurial because there isn't one type of sugar your body needs as well as fats.there are simple sugars and complxe sugars that needs digested and decomposed to simple sugars before being absorbed into the blood to be delivered to body cells where they are processed to produce energy. Its mainly sugars that gives your body the necessary energy you need for physical and mental activities. So yes they are essential. Also known in the medical sciences as Carbohydrate. Just like a car needs fuel to run. You need sugars to survive and keep going.

The final word is that glazed ring doughnuts are the nearest to 50/50 fat and sugar which is the magic 'most evil of all' balance to make you fat, haha!!

And they failed to mention different metabolic types having different needs too. It was a bit of a wishy washy programme as usual - they didn;t really present one side or the other well.

Of course the other problem is their entire hypothesis may be biased - maybe the selection of glazed ring doughnuts over iced and cream doughnuts is not about their sugar vs fat percentage, but their pavlovian association with cock measuring??

You see ring doughnuts, you drool, you select! Voila - science turned on it's head!

"Anything processed is bad! "

Any food that hasn't just been pulled out of the earth or picked off a tree by our own fair hands in processed in one way or another. Flour is processed. Cheese is processed. It's just a case of working out which food has had the most chemicals pushed in it during processing and cutting them out.

I'll stick to my 'everything in moderation' rule.

Sorry but you need a few more chemistry lessons.

Sugars are carbohydrates but they are not the only carbohydrates.

Sugar, or even sugars, are not essential.

As for how essential carbs are, opinions vary. Some people eat permanent very low carb diets with 20-30g carbs per day and do just fine on it.

Carrots contain sucrose, glucose, xylose and fructose, all of which are sugars.

Sugar is a group of compounds, to which the one we recognise as sugar (sucrose) belongs, along with many others.

Yes, it was the favourite doughnut on both sides of the atlantic - and the one most near the 'perfect' evil 50/50 fat/sugar ratio which apparently is the most addictive, and most easliy turns us into walruses!! Rats offered unlimited fat OR sugar did not overeat dramatically or gain much weight, but when offered a 50:50 mixture of both ie cheesecake, they pigged out and piled on the pounds.

Sure I read something about sugar being far worse for us than fat.

For years now the medical profession has suggested reducing cholesterol as a benefit in fighting cardiac disease. However heart disease is still on the rise despite the general fall amongst the population of their cholesterol.

So sure they said that therefore it is not necessarily fat that is the problem but more likely that sugar is the true villain, in relation to cardio-pulmonary problems.

just to be safe, do what millions of guys have done already and get married, you will never have to worry about fat or sugar then because your wife will make sure you eat loads of shit instead..... sorted.

Having horses, I use to buy half a ton of carrots every fortnight, I juiced about a pound most days, that makes half a pint of carrot juice, which I drank,

Since becoming type 2 diabetic, I found carrots contain a lot of sugar, so now I don't eat/ drink them, neither do the horses, as they help rot the teeth, changed to turnips for the horses..

A large Mc Donalds milk shake contains 35 teaspoons of sugar, plus fat ( not looked into how much fat)

A small individual Mr Kipling apple pie contains 7 teaspoons of sugar ( you wouldn't think it would fit !)

Its the hidden sugars and fats and salt that do most damage,

If fat wasn't flavoured with salt, sugar or MSG, we wouldn't eat it!

There is a theory that eating sugar causes an insulin response, (which we know is true), and that response puts the body in the ideal state to store fat. So if you eat carbs and fat together, the fat goes directly to be stored.

That's the claim behind "food combining" diets, such as Slimming World which say don't eat carbs - especially simple carbs (like sugar) - and fat together.

Strangely they didn't cover that? I would say most things are ok to slightly nibble and use for sexual purposes!!

Phewwww i can put them back on me shopping list

I think Ryan and Obi should be dead thinking about it. Look at the amount of doughnuts they need just for measuring purposes.

"

Maybe not dead, but certainly blimp sized. I can't even write the word doughnut without gaining weight!

"The slimming world diet does work but you have to stick to it if you want to keep the weight off. I know this only too well. But we all need a certain amount of fat on our bodies "

Slimming world, is a business, it exists to make money, if their diets worked, they would soon be out of business.

Slimming world say you can eat as much as you want of certain foods, for example,

Fried eggs, chips and baked beans, ( the chips being par boiled, spray with low cal frying oil, and baked, so not deep fried.)

The reason we are fat is we eat more than we need,

there is only one way to lose and maintain weight, eat less and move more.

Every diet works initially, because you lose water, and any change of eating habits will bring about change to weight.

Weight and weight loss or gain, is not about food, its about control, food is the one thing we have control over in our life.

The majority of obese people including me, have emotional issues, until they are sorted weight will be our comfort blanket.

Upbringing is also another factor, but that also to some extent comes under emotion. My parents were poor, but we always had lots of food, mostly " comfort food"

*sigh*

I wondered how long it would take for "eat less and move more" to appear.

I really can't be bothered to do that all again so I'll just say no, it isn't always that easy.

Everyone is different. We have different builds, different metabolisms, different energetic requirements, different genetics...

Eat less and move more is a gargantuan over simplification.

Of course Slimming World works. Temporarily. As stated, you need to stick to it long term for it to keep working and most people don't.

Part of the "eat as much as you like" thing centres on the theory that when you avoid eating certain combinations, you are massively less likely to over-eat. Please refer to earlier comments about glazed doughnuts switching off one's eating self control and the rats that when fed just carbs or just fat didn't over-eat but when fed both together did.

The "eat less" bit is a hell of a lot easier when things like that are known and people can eat in a way to help themselves rather than setting themselves up to fail. "Eat less" is about so much more than willpower.

Anyone saying, "it's simple, just eat less and move more" hasn't a clue what they're on about.

We all have about 95% Identical DNA, we have choices to make every day, what we eat is one of those choices.

Life is simple, but we like to make excuses and over complicate most things.

"

In this case, that's rubbish.

There are at least ten genetic markers already known that relate to weight management. The more you have, the more likely you are to be overweight or obese and the harder you have to work not to be. That's a scientific fact.

Life is not simple. Human beings are not simple organisms. "Eat less and move more" on a very, very basic level may well be true but there's so much more to it than that.

And that it's acceptable to make people feel bad because they have a harder time managing their weight than others is only making matters worse.

Like you said, a lot of people have emotional issues which contribute. So yeah, tell them it's easy snd there's something wrong with them if they can't do it. That'll definitely help.

Over the rainbow, under the bridge

Any good nutritionist will tell you that ee don't need to add sugar to our diets. It occurs naturally in our food. Processed sugar which we put in our tea/ coffee is unnecessary and will only make you store more fat unless you burn it off by being active.

Certain fats are essential but as has been said moderation is key.

Eat less and move more is a dismissive over simplification.

If people do not know, for example, that certain combinations of food are likely to make them over-eat then they are probably doomed to fail on the eat less part.

That's not over-complicating anything, it's how things are.

Certain foods and combinations of foods are more likely than others to be addictive, which is certainly going to impact on your claim that we can choose what we eat.

At a basic level a drug addict can not take drugs. Addressing the issue by telling them "don't do drugs" without dealing with why that might be difficult for them is not going to work.

Telling fat people "eat less and move more" without educating them about how they are likely to be able to do that successfully is similarly likely to fail.

Weight management is not just about willpower and personal choice. To suggest it is is unfair to those who struggle.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

"

Was the glazed doughnut raised in the programme as a couple of people have posted about glazed doughnuts?

Yes, it was the favourite doughnut on both sides of the atlantic - and the one most near the 'perfect' evil 50/50 fat/sugar ratio which apparently is the most addictive, and most easliy turns us into walruses!! Rats offered unlimited fat OR sugar did not overeat dramatically or gain much weight, but when offered a 50:50 mixture of both ie cheesecake, they pigged out and piled on the pounds."

Wow! But it does make sense. I raised the doughnut earlier in a lighthearted way.

I don't think I could eat unlimited doughnuts - one is usually fine - but I could possibly have a doughnut earlier in the day and then have cheesecake later. I'm doomed to be a walrus.

Oh I could eat a pile of them! But I am of the type that cannot really do carbs, if I avoid them like the plague I'm fine, if I don't - coo coo ca choo!

get plenty of exercise, mix in some healthy eating and you can enjoy both in moderation

Some of us can't do moderation when it comes to carbs. I can't have just a little. It's like alcoholics can't stop at one drink.

No, it just means I have to cut out refined sugar completely and cut carbs down to a minimum.

It's a genuine addiction just like any other. I mean it when I say I can't do moderation. I literally can't, exactly like an alcoholic can't have one drink.

I can go cold turkey and go without sugar and with minimal carbs for months but one piece of cake and it all goes pear-shaped. Well, apple-shaped in my case, actually.

In fact, to lose weight I do need to cut out sugar and cut carbs right back. Nothing else works for me.

The first few weeks of the cold turkey are a bitch though and I've yet to last more than 4 months without falling off the wagon.

Not true. It's absolutely possible to live, and be healthy, on minimal amounts of carbs, long term. The body has other metabolic pathways to produce energy.

Fats are essential though.

It is possible to live, and be healthy, long term on 30g of carbs per day. Less in some cases.

Oh, and I'm also sensitive to complex carbs. Not as badly as with simple carbs but they can still kick of cravings and bingeing on far too much carb rich food. Pasta and potatoes are especially bad, rice not quite so much.

Some very interesting points in this thread. And I'm hoping some myths expelled too.

There is clearly not a simple solution. Why the heck we have been trying to peddle the wrong message for all these years is beyond me. Then again, the food industry has huge influence over government policy.

Do you not think that, when it comes to having to "tell fat people", that there has already been a significant failure?
