Second hand smoke

So, it's now illegal to smoke in your own car with your children inside.

On Daybreak this morning Dr Hillary fully supports this and says it'd protecting children who don't have a choice.

The opposition claims it's morally wrong for the government to impose laws on what you do on your own private property. He also says equally as dangerous to feed your child McDonald's 3-4 times a week.

What are your thoughts?

Great idea to ban smoking with kids in the car.

There was a thread last year about it. Some people thought their right to smoke was far more important than their kid's right to health.

I agree with the ban on adults smoking in a car with children. They aren't able to ask them not to. Why would you want to as well, especially as asthma in childhood is more prevalent than ever.

My friends who smoke will always check if I'm in a car with them if I mind them smoking. If I say I'd rather they didn't then they don't.

I would imagine most people are responsible enough to not smoke in a car with children in but we all know some aren't. As part of my job, we visit people's homes to fit smoke alarms and as that then becomes our "workplace" for the duration of the visit we are within our rights to ask them to stop smoking or leave without completing the visit. None of us have done it, who would ask someone in their own home to stop smoking??!

It's a very good idea, actually have done both, I had my twins very young smoked through the pregnancy as I wS to selfish to stop, smoked in the house, years later when I had my son I have up,, and on my second son gave up for good, if never have smoke around them now as oddly enough both the boys have asthma, and the girls have no chest issues,,,

It shouldn't need a law. I would question why any parent (or adult for that matter) would subject children to passive smoking. The harmful effects are well documented and proven, it's neglect and potentially even abuse.

Yes and that could also be said for fat overweight children that is neglect and abuse,, it's still goes on, things aren't always cut and dry, like I said in my comment I was to young to know any different, now I'd never allow anybody to smoke around them, and I never give them junk either, or in a baby bottle, which is another pet hate, as seeing somebody smoking in a car with children

As smokers (me just occasional) I agree, this day and age with all the knowledge we have that people still smoke around kids or even other people on confined spaces, which I hasten to add we certainly don't.

But I've seen quite a few people smoke with kids on the car. Sometimes two adults chuffing away with windows wound right up and two kiddies on the back seat. I makes my blood boil.

This should be passed but is it really going to work?! Parents shouldn't need a law to stop them smoking in a car with their children, surely it's common sense. You're supposed to protect your child. I had a lung tumour removed at 18! I wouldn't want anyone else to go through that unnecessarily

heavily areas of congested traffic are like 'passive smoking' it was reported yesterday in the metro...I researched the issue for a project on health in 2004- an example of glasgows central station tunnel can effectively be like inhaling 20 cigarettes.

so its clear...its only cigarettes that cause health problems....aye fucking right!

Makes me laugh. In this day and age where "elf and safety" is thrown at us from every angle, having to wear safety helmet, wear gloves , goggles , ear defenders, signs everywhere saying slippery floor, mind your head etc. this is all done to prevent accidents and fatalities but the one thing that we all know kills 1000s every year is perfectly legal and it's also perfectly legal to poison others including your own children !! If you smack your child around the backside you can face prosecution but if you poison them on a regular basis then that's perfectly fine !! Rant over

obesity, and Mc Donalds go together,

more children are showing as type 2 diabetic now than ever before, In a Mc Shake, large size there are 35 teaspoons of sugar, in an average happy meal 1 teaspoon of salt,

It isn't about having the odd treat, ie burger or happy meal, its about relying on fast food for your diet, 30 yrs ago, the only fast food was fish and chips, its about lifestyle and education,

Mc Donalds know that sooner or later, their products will have to carry health warnings, same as cigs, and they have started introducing healthier options, in readiness for new laws.

You can lose weight eating or drinking an unbalanced diet, Mc Donalds can be used in a diet programme,

The problems with Mc donalds and most convenience/ fast food, is the amount of sugar, salt and MSG it contains, and the trans fats.

Which increases risk of heart, circulation and diabetic diseases.

As a smoker of over 40 years I now have an acquired formaldehyde allergy, smoking has been banned in public places so I am subjected to smokers standing by doors to buildings, another cause of concern is exhaust fumes that also give of the same toxins as cigarettes, If you don't make your kids ill inside the car you can outside it, its the same.

Do we have a police force or just PCSO's these days

Perhaps true not all, I'm lucky my children are very educated but when you at the school picking them up and some mother is fing and blinding at her child for mis behaving, when he is trapped in a pram at 3 years old with a bottle of pop and a bag of crisps for breakfast, it's no wonder the child is mis behaving,, rather than give the child what he wants perhaps what they need would lead to a much healthier relationship,, and therefore helping the teachers in the school, some of the stories my girls have told me about how the children behave and the teachers have no control is shocking,, going to the school doesn't help any,,

its yet another step to taking parental responsibility away from parents.

you should know best to raise your children.

if you are so selfish as to feel your nicotine kick is more important to you than your childs, or indeed, your own health, then thats for you to live with the consequences.

if you bring about your childs poor health through doing it, then you should be open to future legal repercussions.

wasnt it only a few years ago that a fella sued his parents because he got lung cancer yet never smoked a day in his life? a yank, but still, food for thought.

a parent is always supposed to put the welfare of their child first, shouldnt need governmental intervention to be able to do this.

im neither a parent, nor a smoker, yet would not want this law passed

I think its more of people objecting to whats fast becomming a "nanny state" and not the fact its related to smoking. As a smoker, it does rile me with the amount of hassle we get. Im considerate in the fact that if people visit me , i wouldnt smoke around them....or remove myself if kids are around etc....

But i do think smokers are being hounded to the extreme. Though they never say no to the revenue it gives them. To much money involved.

I agree to be honest.

It is not right, I once heard a mother say about her own child, if he don't like my smoke, he can walk away, how wrong.

Confined to a car with smoke in there, what can they do.

Nine times out of ten, I step outside my back or front door.

Respect for my kids, I have done it indoors when I have had company over, that is wrong too.

"I think its more of people objecting to whats fast becomming a "nanny state" and not the fact its related to smoking. As a smoker, it does rile me with the amount of hassle we get. Im considerate in the fact that if people visit me , i wouldnt smoke around them....or remove myself if kids are around etc....

But i do think smokers are being hounded to the extreme. Though they never say no to the revenue it gives them. To much money involved."

I do not see much consideration from smokers these days not only in cars but outside where there is no consideration given to others. Dedicated smoking areas in pubs/clubs and public places would help many, as the number of smokers gets less then revenue is gathered elsewhere, ie petrol, VAT.

"So, it's now illegal to smoke in your own car with your children inside.

my thoughts are you shouldn't need a law to protect your kids from your smoke, any decent parent just wouldn't smoke in their car with their kids inside through choice not law

the people that do will find their justification from somewhere.

usually, at the shortcomings of someone/somebody else.

it is so much easier.

I agree with this new law (if passed) wholeheartedly. A huge proportion of NHS spending is taken up by childhood illnesses, which are often made worse by careless/lazy/feckless parents. I would extend this and make it illegal for parents of children still at school to smoke indoors in their homes. A mechanism could be set up at the school for the children to report parents who put their own kids at risk in this way.

I also never get pregnant women who smoke, I have always thought that should be illegal, if its against the law to smoke under 18 how is it ok to force a unborn child to smoke? then have to be told not to smoke in your car round your child, what is wrong with some people

Several things to have fitted into a car at the time of putting them together... Some sort of gadget that will not allow signals to get through to your phone, making using them impossible. and a very very loud smoke alarm which is activated when smoking. Something that cant be switched off and will only stop when any smoke has cleared.

My mates would be inventions which he wants paterns for ,

What about the parents who feed their kids into obesity? Clearly that should be considered abuse as well?!?

"I would imagine most people are responsible enough to not smoke in a car with children in but we all know some aren't. As part of my job, we visit people's homes to fit smoke alarms and as that then becomes our "workplace" for the duration of the visit we are within our rights to ask them to stop smoking or leave without completing the visit. None of us have done it, who would ask someone in their own home to stop smoking??!"
yer bet it`s a public sector job ,councils love bossing people about nowerdays, turning into right hitlers,,

I have, on several occasions. I was a paramedic, and a few years ago I went to an asthmatic young child with reported breathing difficulties, and there were three adults in his small bedroom, all clucking away sympathetically whilst smoking with the windows shut. They really didn't like it when I told them to put the fags out and open the windows. When we took the kid to hospital, I made a report to the duty social-worker who told me they could do nothing about it. I hope that's changed now.

"I agree to be honest.

I cant abide a smoke filled car, so can imagine what a kid goes through.

Because im not fully mobile, i do smokuoe inside , only because i cant keep getting up ....Once im recovered from my next operation.........it will be back outside, especially once my brother has redecorated. ...paint and paper is already here "

get well soon,I can't wait to decorate either

"Great idea to ban smoking with kids in the car.

There was a thread last year about it. Some people thought their right to smoke was far more important than their kid's right to health. "

I already thought it was illegal xx

"Shouldn't be a ban different story if someone was smoking crack in there with a kid! Weed should be legal! Weed doesn't do harm plus it's benaficial to learning and better for coping! . "

Are you serious, "...doesn't do harm.."? Think you need to do some research.
