"Lloyds already limit how much I can take out. Apparently I'm supposed to put some into the account first or something " It does help I spose As for crediting account from returned goods, I think it depends on the company, I have sometimes only had to wait 24 hours.

" As the bank problems are becoming more frequent I might up the amount of emergency cash I keep." I think over the last few months with the amount of problems that have come to light, I am tending to do the same.

"I stopped banking with the co-op the 3rd time their systems crashed. the worst instance left me stranded in central London at 1 in the morning and they were down for several hours! The other times were quite short term issues but unless I was particularly unlucky I refuse to believe that was the only time and suspect intermittent crashes were quite common. It is worrying that there is little that you can do when their systems crash. " See that's what I mean, its scary that we rely on these systems so much, yeah they are great when everything is tickety boo, but to be stranded or without fuel, or food must be horrible.

"..... I carry two cards from different banks and a small amount of cash just in case. " A solution which seems far too sensible for most folk.

".......... and those that ask for money back when there is a cashpoint out the front of the shop, well thats just fooking annoying!!!" Until recently I didn't know cash back still existed. I try really hard not to use money machines outside shops, garages etc. Theyre much more likely to have been fucked about with than those inside a bank branch - if you can get to one.

Not sure why (I could Google I guess) but I was told a while back by a checkout operator that they had been told not to offer cashback - the customer has to ask. Since then I've noticed this is the case in more than one chain, so presumably it's a banking thing. I guess the banks realised that people using cashback were avoiding the ads on the cashpoints.

"what i get frustrated about with debit cards is that if i buy an item from a shop they take my cash instantly.. if i return an item i have to put in my card, re type my number into the machine yet it still takes 3-5 days to be transferred back to me Sorry i know was off topic " It works both ways in effect. I run a small business that takes credit and debit cards. The money is instantly taken out of your account the moment the pin has been accepted just like at a cash point, however it can take anything between next working day and 5 working days for it to be credited to our business account depending on which card terminal I have and which bank I bank with. Your right in saying the same happens for refunds but depending which company you use the credit only starts to happen when the company activates it, for example my partner returned stuff to Love Honey and it was several weeks before the money was returned to her account. Ofcourse the money is removed from the business account as soon as the transactions are recieved by the bank, in this case the next working day. As is the case with cheques, the money just sits in the banks system making money for them while the computers work at super slow speed. Its why we now get most of our business customers to pay by bank transfer as the funds arrive almost immediatly. Jet

"One of the banks has recently had a bad PR story about how they refused to let customers make sizeable withdrawals (a few thousand pounds), until the customers told them what it was for. It was HSBC I think. So people are trying to take out their own money and HSBC were saying "not till you tell us what you want it for" The customers had all called in advance to let the bank know they were going to take out a large amount, the bank said "no problem", then when the customers got to the bank some officious arse said "what do you want it for" The bank claimed it was to prevent money laundering. The press said "bollocks, you are just trying to prevent customers withdrawing funds, so you ask what they want it for and then suggest an alternative to withdrawing the money" The story hit the press and HSBC rapidly revised it's policy Funny that" rumours are HSBC is effectively bankrupt. If you google "HSBC insolvent" you can find some chatter about it ....
