Elinor Smith - who made her first solo flight at the age of 15 from an air strip on Long Island where she grew up, and she became the youngest person in the US to earn a pilot’s licence as a 16-year-old in 1927. In January 1929 she set a women’s solo endurance record of 13½ hours. It was one of her earliest feats in a series of height, endurance and speed records that established her as one of the leading female pilots of her era, aged 98
